Speculation points to this just being related to Apple's servers being overloaded, and some users are seeing success after multiple attempts.

At this point, simply waiting and retrying seems to be the best solution.

Yes, it does seem to be a server issue. I tried literally a couple dozen times using every fix I found on every thread on the internet to no avail.

Here's what I did differently that finally worked ...

I went to lunch, came back and tried "one more time" and it went through without a hitch. Nothing different this time on the computer or the iphone (and didn't even restart this time). Ten minutes later, it's currently "restoring music and videos."

I kept getting this error and eventually I was able to get mine to update but it took quite a few tries.

Wait, what? Where did you go to lunch? What did you eat? I NEED to get iOS5 installed, don't leave me hanging here... ;)

What error does it give you?

---

Cool thing: while it syncs now you can use the iPhone and a rotating synching icon appear at the top :)

Transfer your purchases because iOS 5 will delete all your apps. After you update the phone you have to transfer them back. However the photos and the contacts will still in your phone after the update.

As far as I can tell:

Error 3200 = Apple's severs are overloaded.
Solution: brute force technique. Keep trying until it works.

Error 6 = Your firewall is blocking the update (seems to be Windows only).
Solution: if you're on Windows close down anything remotely related to a firewall, like Windows Defender, AVG, Norton, etc. I've yet to see Error 6 happen on a Mac, but solution should be the same - shut off firewall apps.

flick airplane mode on, changed USB ports, job done.... seems to be doing it just fine, its currently restoring everything now!

Now... just another iPhone todo, and an iPad!

Anyone know what will happen if i don't do the iPad? We have mobile me, but will it mess iCloud up if we leave one device on ios4 ?

You don't have to backup each time. Once the iOS5 file has been downloaded, just click Restore; when prompted if you want to backup, choose no. The upgrade will still probably fail, but at least it takes a lot less time! ;)

So I shouldn't click update but restore?
never mind its doing it right now. 6 backups (each 15mins) which were deleted and rewritten every time, later and it works. LUCK!!!

Even the 20 something year old Zuckerberg knows how to roll out an update better than Apple.

When Facebook offer a new option to download all of your data, they knew MILLIONS of people would want it and start downloading it as soon as it was available.

Facebook make it only available to a certain number of people per day. The update went flawless although some people couldn't get it on the very first day and had to wait until the 3rd day. It sure was a lot better than this typical Apple BS.

But on the brighter side, my iPad finally made it through the update. None of the folders were saved, all my apps are scattered wherever Apple decided to put them. Some settings need to be set up again. A very poor update on so many levels. I hope the new features outweigh all the BS people have to go through to get it. And we don't even get the new SIRI feature, even more BS!

The most painful and frustrating part about this is that the backup runs EVERY time and it takes forever. Each time I try to get the software loaded it takes me 30 minutes. ARGGGGh.

I have now tried 4 times over the last 4 hours. I am on #5 right now, hopefully 5th time will be the one!

I got the error on the first two tries, the first one leading to the phone saying "connect to iTunes". On the third try, I clicked restore and it seemed to be working until the progress bar on the phone stopped moving about 2/3 of the way through, and has been stuck there for almost 2 hours. The top of iTunes still says "restoring iPhone firmware" and the little bar is still moving. Am I getting somewhere slowly, or am I frozen up and SOL? What is my next move?

Patience is the biggest key here, it finally worked for me...I freaked out...where are all my apps...itunes said it was restoring...they came back, in original place, plus some for what was added...then restored all music...1.5 hour process.

Already updated both iMac 27" TB and 15" MBP to 10.7.2

iPhoto came in on update for MBP but not for iMac

Now time for my iPad!!!

Then iCloud transition...thank GOD for creating Agave!

I've been fighting to see a glimpse of iOS 5 on my Verizon iPhone 4 since 3:00. Hours later, I finally downloaded the ISPW and tried a few times that way until it worked. I'm almost done with the setting restore from backup. It's getting close...

Yeah, because no one would be on here complaining when their friends and coworkers has iOS5 before them. I think this is just proof that Apple has far more brand loyalty and dedication the Facebook.

The fact that you need to contact apple's server AND internet to update and restore is stupid. I know they're trying to stop people from downgrading but this is ridiculous..
