Finally got it to work... so much for my folders though, it just dumped my apps where ever it wanted. Seriously Apple, I'm unimpressed with the update process. There's a reason other companies stagger their rollouts.

Hi I'm from Italy
I solved the problem installing Hotspot Shield and it worked.
Earlier when I tried to update I got an 32XX error and my iPhone4 stopped in recovery mode. Panic...
I tried to recover the iPhone and it stopped after a couple of minute returning in recovery mode. Panic.
Finally I installed Hotspot shield made i running, I repeated the recovery and it went well.
Now everything is fine.
Hope this Help

Ciao
Marco

You guys saying your on the 10th-20th time...How is that possible? Is it not taking a long time to re-do the "backup" each time?

Just curious as each attempt here it did backup each try and that in itself took close to an hour.

By the way 3rd time was the charm and finally past the 3200 error and in the middle of restore at the moment...crossing fingers

After 4 tried, it crosses the backup line and then you can do they tries faster... but some times you stuck in some modes, that u have to manually go to dfu mode...

Same old story. Everyone jumps on a x.0 update at once and expects things to go 100% smoothly. Why not just wait a day or 2? What is so urgent that you have to have the update now? Just wait for the servers to calm down and try again tomorrow. Then you'll also know if the update is safe or not.

Error 3014 mean the same thing as everyone else's error?

All the 3000-whatever errors basically amount to the same problem. Here is the text from Apple's own support doc:

Errors 3000-3999 (3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the gs.apple.com server on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an old version of iTunes is installed, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see error 1004 above), or because of your Internet proxy settings. If you are using a proxy, try without using one or with a known-good network. If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. Error 3014 may indicate that you need to free up more disk space on the computer before trying to restore again. Error 3194 most likely indicates you do not have the latest version of iTunes installed Update to the latest version of iTunes.

This is absolutely the worst experience I have ever had with an apple product. I kept getting the same error as everyone else... for the first few times. Then I got another error and my phone was in recovery mode. So I tried restoring. Another error. Luckily nothing had really happened and I was able to get back and iOS 4 was still there with all my settings. So I tried again. This time my phone was stuck in recovery mode. Couldn't seem to get out of it so I tried to restore again. Another error. Now my phone is on an endless loop of apple logo -> loading indicator -> apple logo...

I need my phone to actually work and right now it is utterly useless. I didn't do anything any different to anybody else but my phone simply doesn't work.

OK, so you dodged the bullet the first time, but you tried again anyway and you're mad at Apple?

Maybe, you should've just waited until the server issues were over, before trying again...... just a thought. ;)

Their servers are swamped, there's nothing you can do but wait. There's no server farm in the world that could handle the number of idiots retrying the download continuously.

Would adding apple's host "gs.apple.com" to hosts help to update software?

Of course not.

Omg so ****** off by this!! They had 16 months to test this! Apple iCloud has no QOS for the updaters? Is there maybe a wrong timeout value somewhere??

Then, you know, a few hours won't hurt you.

this same exact thing happened when the iPhone 3G, iOS2 and Mobile Me launched back in 2008. Apple launched everything on the same day, the servers got overloaded, people's phones were bricked for hours on end, and Apple later admitted their mistakes.

I can't believe they launched this all at the same time again, instead of learning from that experience.

I turned off my firewall and virus protection. I unplugged all of my USB connections except for my mouse, keyboard and iPhone. And that seemed to do it. Or I got lucky.

I'll update my iPad later tonight. Hopefully I won't have to do that again.

"It just works." Uh huh

This is all part of that magical "user experience" everyone keeps talking about. :D

I got lucky and got it to work after the 5th try. Just kept hitting restore each time I got the error and it just finally went through.

Since I know apple would be too cheap to upgrade servers they should have priority updates if your updating your iDevice on a Mac OS machine, ive tried about 20 times now, still no luck.

Gotta say, it felt pretty magical when I was finally able to use my phone again ;)
Probably would have felt a little more magical if it had worked the first time though.

Guys,

Reboot Iphone..Hard reset style. Try to restore again...You will get another error 3014. At this time go in and erase the two host files.." 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com" and 127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com. go back and hit restore again..Walla it works!:D

Deleted Everything On My iPhone

When I got the 3200 error I tried to update again. It wouldn't allow me to update anymore, just restore. Now the restore won't work, just gives me errors! Any Ideas?

I think Apple's servers are just bogged down. I have tried everything. It finally wiped my ipad2 and I had nothing so I had to restore it from the backup, it's still restoring. I've tried 20x to update it today. At 12:08, I was able to successfully upgrade my iPhone 4 to ios5 with no problems.

It would have felt 'normal' if it would have worked the 1st time :) When it FINALLY works, the feeling is better...magical :))
