Also check to see if you are sending back Diagnostics and Usage. Though to be honest I am not sure when the phone sends that stuff to Apple or how large the files are that it sends.

Not sure what I just tried helped. I lost 20% battery over 1 hour of nothing.

I just followed the instructions on this article and not sure if this will help limit phantom data.

http://allthingsd.com/20100621/appl...r-targeted-ads-but-not-our-location-tracking/

I basically opted out of iAds by navigating to http://oo.apple.com from the device.

Not sure if iAds is sending data back to Apple.

"If you do not want to receive ads with this level of relevance on your mobile device, you can opt out by accessing the following link on your device: http://oo.apple.com. If you opt out, you will continue to receive the same number of mobile ads, but they may be less relevant because they will not be based on your interests."

Going to track to see if this helps.

AT&T MicroCell - Weak 3G - Battery Drain

I am operating a iPhone 4S, others at work are mixed - 3GS/4/4S, the 4 & 4S operating under iOS 5 appear to be draining quickly - this experience appears to only occur while at the office - this past weekend I noted my phone appeared to operate better, not as well as my prior iPhone 4 did, but at least it would make it through a full day - then on Monday - back at work - it died at 2pm after no usage at all through out the day.

Today I brought my MicroCell in - set it up - and before I began using it - checked my phone at 9am (3 hrs) which was presently at 60% - I hadn't used it at all - so I charged it full, and at about 11am I began using it until I left all the while operating on the MicroCell for 3G, the battery when I left work - 5 hours later, was at 85%.

Clearly the weak signal at the office is impairing the battery life - perhaps those with weak wifi or poor wireless routers - may also be impaired, my assumption is that iOS 5 may have implemented a new mechanism for dealing with weak wireless signals which has inadvertently been a drain on the battery life.

Tomorrow will be a full day on the Micro Cell - I have registered it with 5 others - all in proximity of my MicroCell so we will see what the outcome is after a full day operating on it.

Keep in mind that the times listed on the AT&T web site are pretty worthless for diagnostic use. It seems to post data usage in chunks and spits them out at odd hours. You could use your phone for data at 2pm, pop out the SIM and see data usage posted at 11pm that night.

The 3G usage on my iPad2 has actually gone down. On days where I'm wi-fi only (which is most of the time, except for weekends), I'm now using maybe 1.5-1.6MB/day. Before iOS5, it was somewhere around 2-3MB/day.

(Daily measurements are kept by the DataUsagePro app.)

I've got my answer.

It was the option that allowed iCloud to use 3G data after all. Why the hell would they BURY that toggle switch in the menus, and have it switched on by default?

But that's not the end of it! Turns out my phone has simultaneously been unable to connect to my home WiFi for the last few days. Despite trying every known fix under the sun my iPhone 4 flat out refuses to join my home network. No amount of resets, restores, or setting tweaks changes things. All protocol settings are fine, all passwords are correct, and every other device in my home is able to connect without issue. My phone continues to tell me it is "unable to connect to network xxxx".

Hit in the wallet with a 1-2 punch by iOS 5. Do you think Apple would be interested in paying my phone bill this month? No, didn't think so.

Sorry if somebody mentioned it already but you can disable use of 3G for documents and data in iCloud settings. Will only sync them when you're on wifi.

wow. just checked my account and i have used 850 MBs this month. I averaged about 180 MB over the last 6 months. thankfully I still have the grandfather unlimited plan, but this is really surprising!!! iCloud shouldnt be downloading THAT much. it should do it all over wifi. I'd be pissed if I were paying for it!

I have seen the same thing, I used over 800MB this month and my avarage is about 300-400MB`s a month. Data Plan is limited to 1024 MB ...
Using wifi at home, not using photostream, not using iCloud Documents & Data over 3G just Wifi !
I know my apps good and I know what causes how much traffic, I really was surprised to see this today...

My problem with that is that the option is OPT OUT and it's BURIED in the menus. This is going to happen to A LOT of people and they are going to be PISSED when it costs them a TON of money this month an/or next.

I have not seen this posted yet on this thread. Keep in mind when you look up data usage and it shows some number at say 1am, that does NOT mean your phone sent a burst of data at 1am. That just means the carriers servers tallied up your data usage since the last tally. So if the previous date stamp was 24 hours earlier then that is an entire days worth of data usage. The carrier does not provide a running tally of data usage and to what person/site/ip address. The PDF alone to send that bill electronically would be astounding in size for a month's usage.

There should be an option to automatically turn off cellular data when a threshold gets reached.

Has this helped your 3G data usage?

In my case, the excessive usage came from a (I assume to be) bug in iOS5 with subscribed calendars using Caldav. Since I've set updating these calendars to "manually", the download has completely stopped.

Just to add that I am also experiencing exactly the same issue (UK, O2)
I normally use less than a few 100's of MB per month, but in only 3 weeks I have used 750MB!!!! WAY MORE than even 3 or 4 months previously added up. O2 have capped my data plan which is only 500MB

I turned off iCloud completely, so I am waiting to see if any more data usage occurs. At the moment it seems to use around 20MB a day, it was on some days doing 70 or 80 MB, and I haven't even been using my phone that much! Everything is closed: Only e-mail and iCloud were 'running' as such, and nothing has changed in terms of me suddenly receiving more emails than normal.

But, even more odd, is that the 'Cellular Data' usage box in Settings>General>About>Usage, is showing that I have only used a few 100MB since I got the 4S. Weird??

I've been on wifi only about 95% of the time since getting the 4s. I have bad coverage 1-3 bars at my location so I keep it connected to wifi. So far I've used 360mb with 200 of that in the first 2-3 days of use. I've literally not browsed or sent any photos on 3G. I've done some speed test on 3G with speedtest.net app when I initially got the 4s but that shouldn't be anywhere near what I'm seeing. The most data I've used in a month previously was 650mb and that was with several days of tethering when I was moving and changing home internet providers. I've started disabling cellular data when I'm in a location with wifi.

Similar problem for me too...When I changed one of my exchange calendars to manual, data usage returned to normal.

Unfortunately, I haven't even migrated to iCloud yet. So that's not it :-(

Damn... Was hoping a simple turn iCloud off would solve the problem.. Apparently not.

I also have an Exchange Calendar set up. Other posters are saying turning this off helps?

Hi! What helped me was turning off "Push" notification for MobileMe mail. I changed it to "Fetch" every 30 Minutes.

I also turned off the following:

1. iMessage, that was a huge improvement.
2. Under Location Service: Compass Calibration, Diagnostics, Location iAds, Setting time Zone"
3. I turned off push notifications for apps that rarely send out notifications.

Try those, let me know if that helps.
