Well an obvious but most likely overlooked item could be better battery life, how could they manage that? Ultra awesome energy efficient dual core A5 chip perhaps? :D

I think it would be cool if they could adopt something like the pixel qi screen but still be able to keep the image just as good or better than it is now on the ipad screen. As it is now, I want to get an e-reader to supplement my ipad for outdoor use but with this type of screen I wouldn't have too. I know this won't happen and is just wishful thinking.

Also I want the ability to output 1080p

1. MiniDisplayPort out - No, I don't think that will happen
2. 4X pixels to 1536 X 2048; same strategy involved in the iPhone 4 - No, Apple will not throw a high-res panel like that into a 10" form factor. Do panels like that even exist?
3. USB in - No, already a dock connector for that
4. Dock connector on one of the long sides - No
5. Mouse/curser support - Absolutely fricking not... Jailbreak if you want that (PS: it sucks)
6. Verizon option - Maybe
7. Expensive - Yes

I wonder when a refresh is going to happen. I assume Apple is going to stick to the iPhone 1 year cycle.

1. Why not? This can lead to VGA, DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort output.
2. Did the panels used in the iPhone 4 exist before they where shown by Apple?
3. Yes, there is an ugly dock connector for that. Integrated would be more elegant.
4. Why not?
5. Why not the option in apps?

Hd

I've heard rumors that the next iPad will have a larger than 1080HD pixel configuration for better than true-HD picture and a rear-facing camera. This would make it the world's Largest High Definition Viewfinder for a camera. (you know Apple always has to have a "first" angle to everything). Even if they just added the iPhone 4's camera, this would be amazing.

After using the iPhone 4, the screen on the iPad looks pretty bad for text. The retina display really does change everything.

I think that they will for sure include a front facing camera so they can have more FaceTime devices. Hopefully, FaceTime will extend into iChat on the Mac, which would enable millions to communicate through it, rather than just iPhone 4 owners.

I would love some better video output option (dare I say HDMI?), but I doubt Apple will go that way, especially since they want to transition into streaming media.

So, for me it will be:
1. better resolution display (possibly 2048 x 1536)
2. front-facing FaceTime camera
3. rear-facing 5MP camera
4. iOS4
5. 512MB or 1GB RAM

I'll buy that for sure!!

HDMI is limited, because it can only convert to DVI-D. With a MiniDP jack, the port is much smaller, it can output to DVI, HDMI, VGA and DP, would be compatible with the Apple 24 inch displays and the adapters already exist in the Apple system. I think their move to streaming media bodes well for this, since the iPad could serve as a intermediate between their streaming service and your display device.

This one is so easy. And it's coming this fall.

Front facing .3mp camera for facetime
512mb of ram
Gyroscope

Everything else will be the same. Same sizes, same prices. I suspect a late September release.

Then I think Apple will ride that iPad out a year and let the competition catch up before worrying about a new release.

I don't think the next upgrade will happen in September... Reason being we'll get iOS4 released around then, and I'd bet it has a few features that aren't included in the iPhone release. That will make of our already purchased ipads 'new' again... Enough to make us sly happy for another 6 months until a hardware refresh.

When that happens, it'll only be the most expected updates. Front facing camera, 512MB RAM, and MAYBE a higher resolution display. In my opinion the display is already great, but some may feel there is room for improvement on a relative basis. And either thinner / lighter with same battery life, or same thickness / weight with a few more hours of life.

Okay, let's see, I'd say...

Front facing cam, FaceTime compatibility, as this iPhone 4 stuff seems too limited in users range to have any use, adding ipad users could make sense. I don't see myself using a camera placed in the back with the ipad, kind of a huge picture taker...

512MB of RAM.

More storage.

Gyroscope.

maybe some kind of port that doesn't hurt the "magical" design. Could think about an SD card reader despite the adapter, but anyway all this seems more unlikely to me.

I personally don't see more battery coming in the next gen.

Maybe we could see the hardware updated in only some models, as it has been done with the ipod touch, keeping an unexpensive (yet expensive!) model away from the big hardware improvements such as RAM or internal storage.

OK I'll bite.

Not until spring
512M processor plus speed bump- possibly more graphics power too.
IOS4 installed of course
gyroscope
improved screen but NOT retina display.
That's it.

Is this enough for me to dump what I have? Maybe, there was pent up demand pushing me to buy but now that I have one I can wait for gen 3.
The only thing that might change all this is what they do to the Touch this Fall. We shall see what that turns out to be but a larger screen would be tempting.

more RAM is pretty much my only concern at the moment. i do a lot of multitasking, and i will do once iOS4 for iPad comes out! bring on 1GB RAM!

faster GPU would be nice too.

I don't think apple will do retina display for the next ipad not because of not being able to source the high res display. The issue will be finding a low power graphics chip to drive the high res. I think apple will make the ipad a little bit smaller but keep the resolution. I guessing they'll shrink ipad to 5" screen which will make it pocketable. Also, camera will be there, both front front facing and back. More capacity, maybe like 128gb. Also, ipad will arrive on verizon before iPhone. I'm assuming AT&T only has exclusive on iPhone. Also, cloud storage will be introduce since you can produce more content on ipad.

makes no sense what so ever. Iphone and ipod touch's screen is 3.5 inches. what would be the point?

Non glare screen option

Higher resolution

Thinner

Lighter

More power

More ram

More storage

More robust mail and browser in ios4

Here are my predictions:

- Same thickness
- Lighter weight
- Retina display
- Same processor
- 512MB memory
- no more 16GB option, options will be (32GB, 64GB, 120GB)
- front and rear facing cameras (although I am not sure we will see FaceTime because how would you call someone on facetime without a phone number?)
- wireless transfer, mainly for files like Pages, Numbers, etc.

Thats probably about it. lol

I think you're right about ios4 having some more features than the phone release for the iPad.

However, were either getting updated iPad hardware to support FaceTime when ios4 hits the iPad OR we're going to be dealing with a dock connector camera. I honestly wouldn't put that past apple. Since you can hold the ipad upside down with the dock connector on the top, it would be the same thing as having a camera built in or you could move it off to the side. Build in a slight angle where the camera is and it'd probably work perfectly.

Knowing apple, it would probably cost $70 for a .3mp camera, but that's besides the point.

iPad 2 is pretty predictable...just like iPod touch september 2010 is. Both these devices will just follow the iPhone 4.

i.e. gyroscope, retina display on iPod touch, front/rear cameras coming soon on both devices.

Ha buy one here in england and get it shipped over ;)

That's weird. All my billing for Apple stuff comes from Ireland. I was in Dublin a few weeks ago, asked where the nearest Apple store was, and was told it shut down, and there weren't any. That amazed me. I wonder why Ireland is not served well by Apple?

My predictions are conservative. The product is selling great, so Apple will do a 3G-3GS type of change:

128 or 256 GB memory option
Faster processor.

And that's about it . . .

Of course I would like the new screen, camera, etc, but I think that it will take longer for a big revision.

Would be nice to improve the resolution to an eye watering 1920 x 1280 (twice the iPhone 4s) since the 3GS had what ... 160 ish ppi and the iPad has about 120 ppi? pretty poor that its ppi is worse Apples last generation phone!

I would have thought it's more important in Apples eyes to make it compatible with the new iPhone than the current iPad res (that way iPhone 4 apps scale perfectly x2 on the iPad) PLus pixel doubling the iPhone 4 screen is easier than pixel doubling the current iPad screen! Then again, if you think the compatibility charts are complicated now, imagine what it's going to be like in 5 years time! (unless we get that long fabled "resolution independent" vector based UI in iOS and OSX some day!)

No retina display...pretty much impossible unless you're dealing with a 3-4" device. The iPad would need to have a resolution of about 2560x1600 (typically found on high end 30" displays) to match the same PPI as an iPhone 4. It won't happen and it's pointless...such pixel density is extremely costly on larger devices but 960x640 is very doable and not too costly on a small device. People here need to do some research...the cost of displays do not scale well with increased resolution, which is why you don't see displays greater than 20" with over 125 ppi.

A few good predictions...512MB RAM, camera is almost definite, slightly streamlined design, greater storage options, gyroscope, etc... It also depends where they decide to take the software and the future of iOS. I think most changes will be very minor. I don't foresee a price drop anytime soon.

I think Apple will be missing a trick if they implement app switching in exactly the same way as on the iPhone. With all that extra screen real estate it would be better, when the home button is double tapped, to show the running apps as swipable mini-screens (almost like the Palm pre), rather than just icons at the bottom.

The reason we see the screen swap animation swapping one entire screen for another on the iPhone is because there's not really enough room to show anything else. Think of how on the iPad you can see your email inbox on the same screen as the email you're reading, whereas there's only room on the iPhone to show either your inbox or an email

I think they'll slightly re-work the app switching transition for the bigger iPad screen
