The one thing I've become very used to and really love on my 9.7" Pro is the True-Tone.
When you turn that off occasionally to see what it would normally look like...wow... it's doing a lot behind the scenes to make things look optimal all the time.

Hugely welcome feature that I'm not sure I'd want to go without at this point. I notice how jarring it can be on my SE after being on my iPP.

It'd be honestly nice to have that on Mac too (with an easy off of course for color critical work)

I have 32 GB cellular iPad 2017 (5th generation), love it. I use it daily. And when at home I rarely use my laptop. It does everything I need. I can VPN into the office with it and Remote Desktop into servers, login to routers and switches with it. I email and text, surf the web, once and a while watch Netflix and Direct TV, and Direct TV is nice because it is data free, I was somewhere with a buddy and we watched a football game on it. I read the news on it daily and once and a while use Word & Excel. Since iOS 11 being able to safe PDF files to it is great. I am able to save all the stuff the school sends out and access it very easily. This thing gets used every single day for something. And I also use it as a second monitor with the duet app with my Surface Pro when a second monitor is needed when working remotely. I think the screen is good. I was at my daughters basketball practice the other night and watched the college football championship on it while waiting for her, the display in my opinion was absolutely great. And during the regular football season, when outside grilling, I took it outside with me and had a game on while grilling. I really like this iPad and it does everything I need/want with ease.

She is 70 years old by the way and she’s pretty good with the ins and outs of Apple products because they are so easy to use.
I have a 92 year-old relative using an iPad 3. He got it new and continues to love all the things he does on it. From computer games, Face-time and Skype, to banking and dealing with medical insurance. His favorite site is MacMost.com since he can learn all kinds of new uses for the iPad 3. He has been asked if he wants a new iPad 2017 but he responds that the battery is still good on the iPad 3 and it does all the things he wants.

I bought a 12.9 pro and am v very happy with it. But knew it was too big for a reader and a daily media consumption. Picked up a 2017 9.7 32gb iPad with a student discount for 309 to use as a reader and for daily tasks and could not be happier. Its a screaming deal at that price. Picked up this case which is probably the best leather case i have found

Saddleback Leather Co.
Saddleback Leather iPad Case 2017 - 100% Full Grain Leather New 9.7" Apple Tablet Protective Cover / Stand with 100 Year Warranty

for the money and for a reader for the iPad. The combo of the two iPads is working out great for me and has just about put my MBP out of business!!!

my spouse has one
it replaced an ipad 3 that was stolen, so we got what the insurance company was offering
actually it works ok, and she says the screen is fine

I bought it on release, use it daily and it's fantastic. Definitely not as zippy as the pro model but does everything perfectly. I'm leaving mine as a legacy device for all my 32-bit apps and just bought a 12.9 model this week.

I bought a 32GB cellular model shortly after it was released. After years of having iPads I realized they can’t replace a computer for me yet and since I don’t draw and don’t need the pencil I decided to go for the cheapest cellular model available (I will always get cellular as I travel a lot to areas without WiFi).

After almost a year with this iPad it’s been great and I don’t have any regrets not getting the Pro. My usage is light (email, internet, media, light word processing, and some games) and it works perfect for me. When I am traveling for short periods I’m usually able to leave the laptop at home and just bring the iPad plus Apple’s Magic Keyboard. I have a Smart Cover and use a clear film around the back and sides to protect from light scratches, so without a case it’s still very light for me.

A lot has been made about this screen, but I think it’s great. I also have an iPad mini 4 in the house (which has a laminated screen) and besides the screen on the mini feeling closer I don’t see much of a difference. The mini does show fingerprints more though.

I really don’t understand all of this hoopla made out over the “hollow” tapping feeling of the 2017 iPad compared to those iPads with laminated screens. Tapping on the mini 4 and 2017 iPad feels and sounds the same to me. How hard do you have to tap/hit the screen to feel/hear this difference? I am a light typist so maybe I am also a light tapper and that’s why I don’t notice it.

Anyway, the 2017 iPad is great value and I think is a good choice for anyone who doesn’t need the pencil.

I have a 2017 12.9 Pro. I gave a 5 gen as a Christmas present and set it up. I was quite impressed with it’s performance for the price. It was for an older person to supplement their iMac. I got it for $249.95 price match at Best Buy, Target was offering but had some BB cards and rewards to cash in. No brainer at that price.

It's the only Apple device I have.

Tried iPhones several times, don't care for them, prefer Android phones.
Tried Mac, big no, prefer Windows.
Tried iPad Pro, nah, prefer chromebook, or Surface.

But for nothing but consumption, a low end iPad is good enough.

Bought the 2017 iPad in November but sent it back after ~2 weeks for 10.5” Pro with Pencil. Refurbished $100 saving. More storage, 4GB memory, pencil, A10X and 11.3. Even that little bit extra screen real estate.

Bought the 10.5 Pro late last year. Then soon after bought the 2017 at better than half the price of the Pro. Found the 2017 virtually as good as the Pro (along with less susceptibility to yellow bands, discoloration, heat, finger prints) and returned the Pro. I just didn’t think sinking that much money in a device with such a limited life made sense anymore.

I’ve had my iPad for about a month now. I use it for music games school etc. it’s quite the step up from Android tablets. I’ll be honest I loved Android. It was awesome that you could get a phone or tablet for an inexpensive price to run entertainment apps.
However the more I learned about security and how Google doesn’t enforce patching, it really got to me. I spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars on Android devices that are so short lived that I should have saved up to buy a flagship device. Well even some of the brand new ones that are hundreds don’t patch or update the os. Sure the apps are there and update, but when I’m sitting on an OS that won’t load a game or app because of a patch that the vendor won’t release it was time to shift away. To top it off the storage space was terrible.
Skip to my iPad and iPhone. They do what I need with the speed, fluidity, and storage I need.
Sure there are features I miss from Android and Windows Mobile, but I have what I need for productivity and entertainment.
I can be writing an email on my phone and continue on my tablet now. I have gobs of storage for my books. I can multitask without having to have a specific phone or tablet to do so. The SE no, iPad yes. So I take notes while reading my books and more. I’m not having to watch YouTube to see if a video shows the available storage to know if it can handle my needs. It just works. Its made my life a lot easier.

I previously purchased the iPP 12.9 but found it too big for my needs. I subsequently purchased an iPP 9.7 for a great price, but found the screen too small as I was using a 10.5" Samsung tablet at the time. I finally bought an iPP 10.5 last year. I use it with an Apple pencil.

I find the 10.5 is the perfect size for my needs. The screen is large enough for most tasks and it is portable enough for travel. I have the 256gb LTE model. I will start to try editing raw image files on it eventually. Editing photos is the only thing I use my MacBook Pro for now.

The only thing that I couldn't find was a suitable case for the iPP. After a month of searching I gave up and modded a Samsung case and a generic plastic back case. It is more stable and versatile than most of the cases I tried.

I prefer the Air 2 and would get an Air 2 over the "New" iPad.
To me it is a downgrade with the screen quality and thickness.
I got an Air 2 32GB for $299 on Black Friday in 2016.
To me the "New" iPad is still overpriced.
I also think the Mini is a great size. I don't know why they only offer 128GB for $399.

I upgraded from an iPad 3 to the 32GB cellular model. Email, browsing, Facetime, watching movies while traveling and TV in bed. i thought about upgrading the the 10.5 but I am happy and have no need for the pencil. It does not replace my laptop so until it slows down too much, it is a keeper.

Mini 4 has a fully laminated display similar to the Air 2. If you check out refurb iPad pricing, the Air 2 is actually more expensive than the 2017 iPad without the fully laminated display.

It seems this forum is dominated by iPad Pro threads. I was just wondering how many people got the iPad 2017 (or 5th gen) when they discovered what a good deal it is, and maybe this thread can be a place to discuss this tablet!

I bought one and love it. Meets my needs very well. Would I have liked a Pro? Of course, but I just didn't see anything to make me see the value in the additional cost for me (and only for me.)

My point is the Mini should be offered at $299 for 32GB. How many people need/want 128GB and it's the only option. The "New" iPad is a downgrade in most aspects from the Air 2. I would buy an Air 2 on eBay/Amazon over the "New" iPad. I got a great deal on a new Air 2 on Black Friday 2016 for $299 for 32GB. iPads are pretty solid and reliable. I wouldn't hesitate to get a used/refurbished one from eBay/Amazon.

There's a reason Apple stopped selling the Air 2 and instead offered a screen downgraded 2017 iPad for $329. A 32GB Air 2 at $329 probably wouldn't give Apple their desired profit margins. I expect the reasoning for not offering a 32GB Mini 4 for $299 is much the same.

There are deals for the iPad Mini 4 128GB for $279-299 (Best Buy typically). Just don't expect Apple itself to lower MSRP.

I have the 2017 iPad base model. Got it during the boxing day sale.

Generally I like the iPad, it performs like an iPad, it works like iPad. It is good iPad. But it still an iPad.

The screen is noticeably worse than iPad Air 2, because it is not laminate. The base 32GB storage is not enough. There is no 64GB option. In all and all, it is just an iPad.

I have one just for porn.

Kidding.

Had one returned it on day 13.
Switched to the mini.

The 9.7 is excellent. No slouch in performance.
The mini fits my needs better.

I have had iPad Air 2... Thing is after iOS 11, iPad Air 2 just wasn’t perform well. I actually went to trade in this for iPad 9.7. Although the screen is downgrade, but it performs well with iOS 11.
