In addition to the 9.7 Pro and 2017 iPad, I also own two Air 2s (my kids use them now). Go ahead and spring for a 9.7 Pro.
Too late I already sprung for a new Bluetooth keyboard for my Air 2. I feel way more productive with that thing now and am prepared for the long haul wait till fall if that ends up being the wait time for a new Pro release. I cannot really complain as honestly I could use an extra month or so to save just a little more money for a Pro, since I will be looking at upwards of $1100 after accessories:confused:. Being a student(high school, not college) working part time it will be a BIG purchase for me and the last thing I want to do is be stupid about it. Although some may argue buying the iPad Pro with a limited income is dumb in its own right, I would disagree, I am young with rather small finical responsibilities so I am treating myself while I can:)

Sent from one of my four iPads? This guy sounds amazing.

Sounds to me he just upgraded and passed down the old iPads to his kids. I reckon that's pretty common. Our family does that for both iPhones and iPads.

That said, finally traded in the old iPad 3 (mine to mom to dad) and my dad can't put down his new iPad. Wish this had been available a year ago. The 128GB LTE would've been perfect for my mom (and a lot easier on my budget). She doesn't really need the 9.7 Pro.

That's ok even if they are all his devices. iPad's are my favorite tech gadget from the last ten years. The more the merrier.

True, my old Air 2 went to my daughter when I upgraded to the 9.7 Pro, so I bought another Air 2 last summer for my son.

The iPad isn't an upgrade to the Air 2 so under rating it doesn't make sense. The new iPad removes the Air from the lineup to make room for a better distinguished iPad Pro. There weren't enough distinguishing features between Pro and Air to have a big effect on consumers besides those that understand tech.

By introducing a $329 iPad, the few hundred dollars more Pro makes consumers take notice of the features that are available. Obviously the new iPad is marginally better than Air 2 for performance but calling it an upgrade doesn't make any sense. Even Apple doesn't call it an upgrade. It's a silent bump to make way for the more profitable product.

Yes, I have two personal iPhones (7 Plus and a 7, and SE for work), two iPads (9.7 Pro and 5th-gen), etc. I kinda like to have backups/spares ;) We are a heavy Apple household. So if someone loses/breaks something, I don't want to skip a beat or frantically try to replace something on short notice.

Yes. This. A thousand times this. :D

The extra phones have been useful for international travel, too. I've used unlocked Androids on overseas trips but both my mom and dad just can't get used to Android.

Yes, my iPhone 7 Plus is unlocked, even though I don't currently have an overseas trip scheduled. My co-worker is in Europe this week, and none of his iPhones were unlocked and he was going to have to bring an old Android (and not too happy about that).

Lol, I actually prefer using cheap Androids when overseas (usually Asia). It's not as big a thief magnet. :p

The A9 processor is proving to be a workhorse for Apple.

Debuting with the 6s/+...putting it in the SE and now the 2017 iPad, just underscores the fact that Apple will shape iOS to this for many years to come.

In contrast, the A8 fared very poorly...Apple should never have paired such paltry RAM with the design.

Half of that has to do with the manufacturing process. The A8 was at the mercy of a subpar 20nm process which limited clock speeds. The A9 was designed for 14nm FinFET which performed very well, especially the Samsung process.

I'm switching from a good android tablet (Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Plus) and the only thing I'll miss is the loud front 4 JBL dolby atmos speakers. The cylyndrical shape to hold the huge battery was starting to annoy me; I prefer flat devices and android was OK but not as good as Apple for apps.

Otherwise I'm happier with iOS. The iPad 2017 is a solid device.

I think the 2017 iPad is a very attractive device, especially for the price. And there's always a refurb iPad Air 2.

We're debating getting a 128 GB wifi for our youngest. We'll see, the need is not that pressing at the moment, he uses an iPad Air 1 now.

I would suggest the iPad 2017 as an owner of a iPad Air 2 and iPad 2017. The iPad Air 2 is mine and I bought the iPad 2017 for my kids. It's a close call but the iPad 2017 feels faster all around. I might taken the iPad 2017 myself but it a 32 GB unit and my iPad Air 2 is 64 GB.

I too am thinking of buying the new iPad but there appears to be a lack of iPad Cases to fit this new "beast", so, I will put-off buying one for at least 3-months.

When I bought my iPad Mini2 I bought three(3) different cases in which the Apple iPad Case turned out to be the best IMO, so, I hope Apple will have BOTH the front cover and back case for purchase in the very near future.

It seemed to be underrated by owners of iPad Air 2 or iPad Pro 9.7" who wanted to justify their original purchase. It was cognitive dissonance in full effect.

All of sudden, a non-laminated display was unbearable and the extra 32 grams made the iPad a brick. In reality, the majority of consumers want bettery batter life over a slimmer iPad. It's a device meant for the couch or coffee table.

It's a solid upgrade using A9 + LPDDR4 + Big Battery + Updated LCD and Wi-Fi.

Gotta say, unless I'm really out of the loop I haven't seen this happen at all. I've been using a 9.7" Pro and think the new iPad is a fantastic addition to the line up.

Not to mention the A9X in the iPad Pros. Feels like this A9 may hang around for a while like the A5 did in many devices.

Meh, I just used my old iPad Air 1 case. Works fine.

I think it's a really smart move by Apple. I won't be buying one because I bought an iPad Pro for the pencil and speakers to use as my main computing device, but I think it'll sell well and it's a good price.
[doublepost=1491521648][/doublepost]I also wonder if this is to encourage as many iPad users as possible to update to 64-bit as it seems like 32-bit support is on its way out soon.

Are you looking in the right place?

Search for "2017 iPad" and you'll find dozens of Amazon Prime eligible cases starting at $6.59, not to mention glass screen protectors.

If you aren't picky, many iPad Air cases will fit as well, especially those with large cutouts.

I bought one today. In the store, I compared the 2017 iPad and the 9.7 Pro side by side. Yes, the Pro screen was better. But really not that much better.

I'm actually coming off the 12.9 iPad Pro, which I've had for over a year but am in the process of selling. It was a great device, but it never quite fulfilled the dream I had of it being a laptop replacement — the hardware would have worked, but the software wasn't quite there. So I bought myself a 12" MacBook about four months ago, which has been great. But the iPad Pro then became marginalized, since it's heavier/bigger than the laptop.

So I'm back to having an entry-level iPad and am fine with it. I like being back to the smaller form factor and the $329 price is right. I use iPads for work and personal stuff too.

There are a ton of cases on Amazon.

So far I'm just using the Smart Cover, and I like the feel of it quite a bit.

I don't "underrate" the newest iPad, but I hardly consider it a "solid upgrade" from an iPad Pro 9.7".
Well, of course not! Apple neither intended nor marketed it as such. It's mainly aimed at those folks still hanging on to their iPads 1 - 4 (and maybe the original, Touch ID-less Air).
