with a 4 year old technology screen
The screen looks beautiful. It did then, it still does. I don't know if you look at it and go 'ugh, look at that yellow screen with only 5 nits and a resolution.. i can see the individual pixels'

At $329 base price, get the 2017 iPad.
The refurbished Air 2 at 16GB is only $10 cheaper.
The Air 1 is barely cheaper than that. Not worth it.

Not everyone cares about the older screen. The internals is what is important.... how it runs.... stability, etc.

I agree . the air 2 is very stable, still runs great and has a better screen than apples budget iPad offering

I'm talking about the laminated display in the air 2. It is beautiful, I agree. Only screens better are the pro models. The new budget iPad has the worse screen of them all.

I do agree the Pro models have the best screen. It’s nice to have with my 9.7. But it’s not a drastic difference vs the Air that I had.

Since this thread has been resurrected somehow, I just wanted to let you guys know that I went for the current iPad (back in April) and am very happy with it

Thanks for all the input!

I Still think the 9.7 2017 iPad as a solid purchase for the price and even if somebody doesn't appreciate the Pro features, the battery life and improvements with A9 processor alonenis an upgrade from the Air 1.

ipad air since running ios11

Not ceartain if could try some new features

I personally chose iPad Air 2/Mini 4 over the 2017 iPad... cuz 2017 iPad is not fully laminated and it has black boarder around the screen similar to iPad Air making it looks ugly. Since Air 2/Mini 4 has 2GB ram they looks much newer, better screen, and can be used in dayligt because of anti reflective coating just like the iPad Pros.

For iPad Air 1 it wont get iOS 12 because its slow ever since iOs 7

I’m in the Air 1 is still cool camp. I had IOS 11 on my Air 1 and it ran fine. The only point I’d make is if you go with it, don’t upgrade to the next IOS release whatever you do.

Yep. Depending on one's tasks, the Air 1 can be surprisingly useable. Of course, given deals available for 2017 iPad or Air 2, it's only worth considering if it's really cheap.

That said, yeah, you definitely don't want to update the firmware indiscriminately. At the very least, wait until there are YouTube videos comparing performance of newest vs older iOS version. Mind, there's a good chance Apple will cut off support on iOS 12 anyway.

I have an Air 1, Mini 4, and just picked up a 9.7" Pro. All of them will play Netflix and YouTube videos just fine. They'll all likewise browse the web and do email quite well. But, navigating the UI is definitely sluggish on the Air 1 compared to the other two, and that's definitely worth keeping in mind as iOS keeps evolving. My vote is the Air 2. It'll do the tasks you outlined for a while longer, and it'll be smooth about it.

Do you have iOS 11 on your Air 1? I never updated mine to 11 and it's still pretty good!
