I tried that as a while, but the mini is still too big to carry in my pocket. I bought the 13 pro max, and it’s great but I wish iOS had some sort of split screen or sldeover.

Same for me. I bought the iPhone 11 Pro Max to be my "iPad Mini" as it fits in my pocket.

So if you can run the same app “Cubasis 3” on your MacBook, then that means you only need a smartphone and don’t need a laptop?

People in Starbucks don’t use iPads?!? Oh no, should I throw mine away???

Did you miss the part "most"? You will always have a couple of guys who will be using an iPad, but most people use laptops.

And on my 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro, I got Logic Pro with 3rd party plugins that absolutely destroys Cubasis 3 and everything that is available on the iPad and iPhone. It is not even in the same league.

Yeah the Pro Max is awesome. I tried a 6+ a while back and swore off any other large phones because it didn’t fit in my pocket. Not sure why the Pro Max fits so well (maybe skinnier), but it’s the perfect size.

This is because Apple does not give Mac a touch or pencil support.
I used SideCar on my iPad and I love it.

Apple can make a touch mac 2in1 call it the "MacBook Touch" with a removeable keyboard. It would sell boat loads. Like the Surface Pro.
Well, it wouldn’t sell boatloads like the Surface Pro because the Surface Pro definitely does NOT sell boatloads. Know what sells more than the Surface Pro?

iPads. :)

The majority of the people buying computing devices today are making a conscious decision to NOT buy Macs. Making Macs touch capable does not change the fact that they’re still Macs. Which, again, is not what most of the computing public is interested in.

My sarcasm was just meant to underscore that I couldn’t care less about what others were using in Starbucks. But I get it, many people at Starbucks use laptops, that’s cool, we all have our preferences.

That is how it should be ofcourse. You pick the tools what you think is best for you and not what others are doing. But I was simply talking more in general, rather than about someone in particular.

You also don’t see them as much as in libraries and in Starbucks, which is dominated by laptops.

In the end, most people don’t own iPads because their smartphones can do the same.

If I create some music in Cubasis 3 on the M1 12.9 iPad Pro, it is 100% identical when I work from my iPhone. It works literally the same.
I don’t get the analogy. That’s like saying a motorcycle is a car because it has wheels and an engine. Anyway, the thread is about replacing a laptop with a tablet, which, as discussed on 160 pages over years, works for some and not for others.
Of course Tablets sell less than smartphones, they have always been additions offering more screen estate at the cost of ultimate mobility.

No it is not, because in your analogy a laptop is a car. The iPhone is a motorcycle and the iPad is motorcycle with a sidecar.

I honestly don't get how you guys are discussing this for 160 pages.

It is cool if people who do only FaceBook, Twitter and e-mails think it is a "laptop replacement". But it is far from it.

I'm perhaps in the same boat as you. I have been using my iPad Pro (2018) for 4 years now as my main machine when away from my work PC. It is excellent, only because I have work VM's that I connect to and do grunt work with. RDP, Jump Desktop, and Parsec are current solutions. It's actually a chore to use iPadOS apps, especially when trying to multitask. (Ever tried doing a video call and multitask on an iPad?).

In saying that, it's possible to use general business tools on the iPad, such that you don't need the 'desktop' experience. Responding to emails, and the like.

Same for me actually. I can "replace" a laptop by remote accessing into servers, PC's or Mac's that I have access to. But that is kinda cheating.

Hmm. Perhaps? My iPad gets far better battery as a result, it's arguably much more portable and flexible than a laptop, and is cheaper! I'll take these smalls wins :)

I fully agree. It is super amazing how much battery life I am getting doing heavy computing from my iPad that is executed on an other machine.

If I would have done this locally on a laptop, it would have run out of battery probably.

Doubtful at best. And when do we get to see the data supporting that assertion?

The iPad is bringing in the least amount of money for Apple now, falling behind Mac's even.

Obviously the market prefers to use smartphones and laptops over the iPad.

Also, if you look outside, many people use their smartphone for media consumption as especially Android smartphones are very big these days.

Some Android smartphones even have a pencil, just like the iPad.

"Outside" does not equate to all usage by any means nor does any of this say "replacement".

The iPad is not a desktop computer, it runs on a mobile OS with mobile apps. So it is intended use is away from home. And under that intended use case, it is dominated by smartphones.

Now sure, you got some people who will buy the iPad as a desktop computer. But that is not really what a tablet is made for.

It will be interesting to see how iPads sell with the release of ios16. Can’t do new thing (stage manager) with your 2 year old iPad? Time to buy a new one…I personally haven’t had a reason to upgrade my iPad since 2018.

Wow, I guess all & everyone using an iPad in their house are doing it wrong...

Maybe Apple should geo-lock iPads, make them only function when the user leaves the location the iPad is locked to...?

Are you guys seriously making the case that the iPad is not a mobile computer?

iPads as "computers" are more popular for people 50 plus or retirees that don't want a desktop anymore and just have basic use, browsing, email, message, facetime etc, my parents were a example retired from business got a iPad and never used a desktop again, still sits in the garage 13 years later lol, no one in our family under 40 has a iPad, all use MacBooks and iPhone.
Also our kids friends/partners in the 22-25 bracket, have never seen one with a iPad.

That is indeed what I also observe. But my sample size is not large so hence why I never brought it up.

Well … No, not going down this road again.
