The iPad is not a desktop computer, it runs on a mobile OS with mobile apps. So it is intended use is away from home. And under that intended use case, it is dominated by smartphones.

Now sure, you got some people who will buy the iPad as a desktop computer. But that is not really what a tablet is made for.
I have no idea where you get these ideas about the intended use for a tablet from. It’s a mobile device, both in and outside of a home. Mine lives on my desk and then moves with me to the couch while the supposedly mobile Macs (that are almost always docked) remain in the office. Of course it also goes on vacation and any sort of travel but at the end of the day, it’s just a screen. What use case you have for it dictates where it will be used. I’m sure plenty iPads live just on a couch or in a student’s bag.

So you must be 50+ and/or retired then as it's my understanding that no young people own an iPad ...

as their only "computer"?
And this is where the misconception leads us to in this thread. Some use the iPad as a complementary device to their existing computer whether it be a Mac or PC. Some use the iPad mainly as a source of consumption or entertainment, while some use it as their source for creativity given the Apple Pencil component.

For me, the iPad is not my only computer… but it is my primary computing device. I‘ve said it plenty of times on this thread… the iPad is limited from a file management perspective to missing desktop class software. But it serves as a laptop replacement for me because I have a desktop PC that can help when the iPad limitation presents itself.

^Perfectly stated. When my ratio of frustration:usefulness increases with iOS/iPadOS, I grab my MacBook to complete a task.

iPads. :)

The majority of the people buying computing devices today are making a conscious decision to NOT buy Macs. Making Macs touch capable does not change the fact that they’re still Macs. Which, again, is not what most of the computing public is interested in.
iPads start at $329. The most popular iPad is the $329 iPad sales wise.

And you wonder why iPads sell more than Macs.

If Apple made a A13 MacBook Touch for $329 it would sell more than an the iPad.

Also what makes an iPad an iPad is the fact it runs iPadOS. Apple can EASILY dual boot macOS but they choose not too because or even give the option because it would effect Mac sales.

Before anyone says a 11" or 12.9" iPad Pro is screen is too small for macOS, there have been 11" MBAs and 12" MB in the past.

Unlocking the bootloader like they do on Macs would make iPad Pros also run Linux natively. I wish iPad Pros could have the option to boot 3 OS's: iPadOS, macOS and Linux.

That machine would be the best seller in the tablet/computer category for in the industry.

There is so much Apple could do. Steve Jobs was not afriad to the kill the iPod with the iPhone. Why is Tim's Apple so scared/greedy to kill the MacBook Air/Base 13" Pro with the iPad Pro. Give the iPad Pro 1 more USB-C port and microSD card it also help.

Wow, I guess all & everyone using an iPad in their house are doing it wrong...

Maybe Apple should geo-lock iPads, make them only function when the user leaves the location the iPad is locked to...?
Are you guys seriously making the case that the iPad is not a mobile computer?

See highlighted text above, you are the one saying the iPad is not intended for use at home, which is ridiculous; hence my equally ridiculious comment about geo-locking...

If you don’t want a pencil. Why would anyone spend $1650AUD on 11” iPad Pro 128GB and magic keyboard when the new M2 air 256gb is $250 more, or even a M1 air 256GB on sale now for $300 less?

Ok but why can't that tablet run macOS as well?
Because the maker of that device couldn’t be bothered to bring macOS into a touch friendly format and because they believed that a device that sells more units likely is better off with iOS and only that. One can only speculate which again is a bit beside the point of this discussion.

Apple obviously thinks it's better two have two separate systems than a single one that is a mess to deal with if you want a tablet experience.
I would like to run some MacOS apps on my iPad, but I would not want to have to deal with plain MacOS on it. Urgh. That would be awful.

Exactly. If macOS on tablets were such a big thing the modbook would have been a home run of a success. Apple shipped billions of iOS devices, that’s the OS they chose to go to.

They can put BootCamp but for macOS. It's not that hard...

The iPad Pro already has a keyboard and trackpad. Apple can offer dual boot.

Likely that that idea was axed by the marketing department immediately. They could, and chose not to.

Gotta be in it to win it
The iPad is bringing in the least amount of money for Apple now, falling behind Mac's even.
Yes and apple said it could see more if there weren’t a comment shortage.
Obviously the market prefers to use smartphones and laptops over the iPad.
Yes, in your opinion.
Also, if you look outside, many people use their smartphone for media consumption as especially Android smartphones are very big these days.
What does media consumption have to do with this topic?
Some Android smartphones even have a pencil, just like the iPad.
Sure if one prefers android.

iPads as "computers" are more popular for people 50 plus or retirees that don't want a desktop anymore and just have basic use, browsing, email, message, facetime etc, my parents were a example retired from business got a iPad and never used a desktop again, still sits in the garage 13 years later lol, no one in our family under 40 has a iPad, all use MacBooks and iPhone.
Also our kids friends/partners in the 22-25 bracket, have never seen one with a iPad.
Good anecdotal story. It just reminds us that ymmv. My son and his wife each have their own MacBook and iPad. (And yes they are under 40)

I think they missed off the part that stated nobody under 50 ‘in their family’ uses an iPad as clearly the statement wildly incorrect in the global sense. All very familiar too I must say lol.

iPads are also for people who can be honest with themselves about their actual computer usage. Unless your family are hacking The Matrix from Zion or running Mission Control for Space-X, I bet an iPad is all they actually need.

PS - Google and YouTube are your friends, plenty of content creators have found that an iPP is all the computer they need.
