I gave up on the main stream news loooooong ago lol

News papers for me are just packing/shipping cushion material

But if I have to look something up, iPad isn’t a bad choice, probably use my phone for research more though
Thanks Goldfish,

for the answer !

I understand you may better wrap fish with newspapers than iPad !

Now I decide to resist and looking for shops with newspapers even in village or foreign country. I understand my willing of reading the same newspapers far from Paris was a way to stay at home in my mind. I'll buy local newspapers...

All the best,
Patrick

This is an interesting topic. News and what's happening around the world is interesting and important to me. How else to vote intelligently without knowing the issues around us?

Print newspapers used to be the de facto way of getting in-depth information and coverage. But I'd say not so much anymore as online sources have caught up or even surpassed them. Though their news analysis and opinion pages are still valuable. I've cancelled my home delivery print subscription recently as it got unreasonably expensive with the same news available online for free. But I miss the paper for the cat's liter box!

Also, my local library has free online access to all the local and many national newspapers. Just find it a bit cumbersome to read on the iPad compared to the broadsheet (as they used to call it) print version (as mentioned earlier).

I understand what you are saying. I have ditched all magazines and newspapers for digital access to read. On the plus side it has decreased my recycling load. I find the most digital access gives me more information and in some cases it’s even additional articles for digital editions as well. It started with my daily paper, and has increase with apple news + service. Now with news plus weighing in its even cheaper on a monthly basis.

For anyone that wants to try out news plus for 4 months- best buy offers a free trial for 4 months.

I recently subscribed to apple news plus for the 1 year membership and it was 89.99 on costco. I tried looking it up but looks like they got rid of it from their website. Totally agree with everyone, iPad is made for media consumption. it's so easy to read a couple magazines and newspapers while you are browsing.

Hello everybody from Paris !

As I am going to travel in August and as I am crazy of newspapers (I buy 4 in paper everyday in Paris), I think I should buy an iPad so I may read even on holidays in places far from shops...

Reading you, I understand iPad mini is very well even if sometimes it's too small... I understand for some of you other iPad are better for reading everyday.

But I have another kind of question: cellular or not ?

In France (but I imagine elsewhere too), the prize difference is very important: iPad mini (64 Go) Wifi = 659€ and cellular 859€

Do you use cellular ?

All the best from a rainy day,
Patrick
All of my iPads have been Wi-Fi only. I use the hotspot feature from my iPhone to have internet for my iPads, and I have had 0 issues with that.

I read the PDF version of the San Francisco Chronicle every day a 5th gen 12.9” iPad. It has the same layout as the print edition but it is easier for me. This is helpful because I can get it every day no matter where I happen to be traveling. I like that I can zoom in on things and make clippings to send to friends and family. I’m in my 70s so being able to zoom in often makes reading easier. Also, I like being able to work the puzzles with the Apple Pencil.

I'm just interested to know if anyone has gone the whole nine yards and ditched physical newspapers (or magazines) in favour of using their iPad (or computer). How do you find it and why do you prefer it?

Getting tired of my 4 foot tall pile of newspapers to discard every 2 weeks I ditched all of my paper newspapers in favor of digital a long time ago. All of them had digital replacements available. Now I can read any of my preferred sources anywhere, anytime on any device. I do use the cellular feature when WiFi is not available. Tethering to my iPhone can have carrier limited speeds particularly when using large amounts of data. The downside is you can quickly go through gigabytes of data on your plan and there is a monthly charge for the device whether you use it or not.

I haven't read any digital media in a long time. I’m also a pianist - all of my sheet music is digitally organized in the Books app. I can easily mark any notes with my Apple Pencil. I go much further than this - all paper that is important gets digitized and filed away in the proper place in the files app.

Thanks Neutrino 17 for your answer!

when 30 years ago I was passionate of science, we would like to know if Neutrino 17 existed... When I read you I understand the answer is yes!

I am close to buy tomorrow the iPad mini but when I read you I remember I love reading in the bigger size. And I am happy to know you read it without any trouble.

I insist, even if it's expensive, I want to support paper newspapers ! But I am going to travel the whole August... So the iPad makes me dream.

All the best !
Patrick

HDFAn, I live in a very small flat in Paris (19 m2) but my paper newspapers are on table, bed, chairs, everywhere and it's very heavy and exhausting pushing them many times a day (for the chair, the table, the bed...). But I trust it... this way of reading... And I want to support the little shop in Paris, at the exit of the underground where it is sold. It's a place where I talk with an human and sometimes other people from the area... Of course, most of the time, men and old like me...

I think I buy tomorrow an iPad cellular (mini or... larger) but at the same time I am afraid I could give up later this way of life...

All the best and thanks for your message!

Thanks crimson avenger...

I agree with you about how it's easier digitizing for finding later... And I notice you have chosen the largest iPad, I imagine for better reading sheet music. I have some doubts about the weight when you read "a long time"...

All the best,

I understand you, I do it with my Macbook... But as in Paris I am movie director but also teacher in suburbs, I imagine funny use in the classroom even far from my phone in my bag. So, if I bought the iPad, it would be cellular...

All the best,
Patrick

If you are thinking of going larger then I recommend the 11" iPad Pro. For me, it's the perfect size. Mini is great but can be a little small. 12.9" too heavy. 11" hits the sweat spot. Good size and light enough to hold for extended periods of time. Good luck whatever you choose.

Agree. If you read magazines it is about the same size as many printed versions.

Great reason. Sadly not an option in my area.

I got my mother an iPad just before the first lockdown, solely for reading the newspaper, and she’s made the switch.

It’s worth reminding people to check their local library’s digital services as a lot offer free access to newspapers, magazines, ebooks, audiobooks, and comics. You just need a library card. They use apps such as PressReader, BorrowBox, Libby, and OverDrive.
Thanks for mentioning this. I just downloaded the pressreader app and put in my library card number and there's all the daily newspapers and magazines - for free! I'm still waiting for the catch, but there doesn't seem to be one. It's even got all the Apple Mac magazines.

The only difference I can see from Apple News+ is that it doesn't have The Times, but it does have all the other UK papers, which Apple News doesn't (at least, not without paying a per-paper subscription)

All news content I read (which tbh isn’t all that much; politics in the last decade or so fell off a cliff in USA so I avoid anything political) is on iPad. I read some magazines there too. There’s one magazine I read (related to a hobby) that is cheaper to get printed & mailed to me so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ that’s what I do… I save up the back-issues and mail them to my nephew every few months.

I have been going back and forth for years now, alternating between reading my newspaper on my iPad and on the physical print edition. I still cannot choose which I prefer? Reading on the iPad looks much better but passing back and forth with a physical paper is so much easier. Then there's the cost, the digital editions being much cheaper. I have got into the habit of buying a paper when on my daily walk. It just seems to be part of the walk, to buy something, to go to a shop and a paper is the most obvious daily "treat". But then, always having news content on a digital device is pretty nice....

I do subscribe to a magazine or two, and if there's a paper around I do enjoy reading it and appreciate the way things are laid out. I also appreciate how things are edited down in print, whereas on the web they can just sprawl on and on because there are no space limits.

But, at the same time there's just a lot of other stuff I like to read and for that I prefer reading longer articles using my e-reader. I like the paper-like display, and the slowness of the interface is kinder to my attention span than the iPad or iPhone where I always end up jumping from thing to thing or just skimming as I scroll. The e-reader also performs a LOT better in sunlight and has a massive battery life.

The way this works for me is that my Kobo reader has Pocket integration built in, so on my Mac or iPhone, I just use browser extensions to save things to my Pocket account. When I sync the reader, the articles appear. I gather the Kindle has similar functionality, but not sure how it's set up.

I prefer physical magazines, personally. But, most of the magazines I read have gone exclusively digital. I think I'm less likely to take larger iPads with me on outings to places where I usually read magazines (solo restaurant trips, mainly), so it's basically limited to iPad mini based use cases. Incidentally, if the iPad mini I have is a cellular model, I'm often distracted by things I can otherwise do while connected to the Internet. But when I'm actually reading said magazines on said iPad minis, it's not a bad experience at all!

Thanks a lot Yebubbleman!

It's my last day in Paris before leaving for August the great town and easy buying paper newspaper. I am confused between buying iPad mini, iPad Pro 11" (AVBeatMan & BigMcGuire gave me the desire) and... nothing because I have debts enough.
Of course I am also confused between cellular... or not cellular. You remind me cellular may send also my mind far from the first text I wanted to read...

All the best from full confusion,
Patrick

I think it's important to mention that unless you particularly need the features in the 11-inch iPad Pro, an iPad Air will always be more cost effective. Past that and the 11-inch iPad Pro/iPad Air vs. iPad mini debate really comes down to personal preference. The mini is casual and portable enough to take more places and more casually (it fits in the front pocket of most mens pants without being obviously bulgy). But, whether or not you will be fine reading magazines on something that small is sort of up to personal preference.

Since 2021 I have stopped using an iPad Pro 11. They are just too expensive.

I do most of my reading now on my MacBook connected to a monitor. I find reading news and magazines to be easiest in this setting on Mac OS (sometimes with my MBP on my lap).

However, reading books - I find easiest on my iPad mini (gets me away from the computer). If I need internet, I can always tether to my iPhone so it is non-cellular and I treat it like a "kindle" reader only. Cellular is expensive unless you absolutely need it - not only is the cellular iPad more expensive but expect to pay $20-$30/mo on the privilege of having an internet iPad at least here in the states.

Gotta find what works for you. From 2017-2021 I used an iPad Pro as my primary consumption device. They're just too expensive now so I've moved to a MacBook for most of my consumption and non-book reading. However, for those times I want to curl up with a book - an iPad mini is just about perfect for that - and it was only $399 (I use it as a book reader only)! :p

Only for heavy cellular usage.

For light use (no video or music streaming), the T-Mobile $10/5GB/150 days plan works great.

Although I like tethering as well, but can’t you guys just get an extra SIM for your normal plan? I pay $7 USD extra a month for another data specific SIM for my unlimited plan.

With work discounts on my line, I can get a tablet added to my plan for about $18 I think. Like @rui no onna mentioned, there's some better plans you can get if you're a thrifty shopper - I know a few people who have them.
