I would like to be able to use my m-audio box to input, for example, my guitar. It works by USB.
Maybe you you should reexamine your needs.
To use the iPad, you need a host computer. Maybe that's what you really should be using for such applications, not the iPad.

To elaborate: to do so, you now expect Apple to not only add space & weight & cost for physical USB, they have to provide the Pandora's Box of allowing/supporting installing & updating 3rd-party USB device drivers - a manifestly complex process which goes FAR outside the paradigm of the iPad (pure wireless, pure information, nothing wired, no low-level data transport concerns).

Oh, sure, I'll give up the guitar and all those hours of practice so I can get an iPad in its current configuration. Good idea!

Or I'll be smart, wait 1 generation, and see what happens. To paraphrase Jobs, at this point, a USB port "is no big deal."

Boy, you REALLY don;t know what you are talking about. It's not even worth an argument.

Just ignore this guy.

This is all I ask. Am I asking too much?

Be able to transfer .wav back and forth via USB or SD card.
Be able to use a usb to midi cable.
A Sound Forge style Audio Editing app with a few filters and effects.

Then I would truly have a "Net Book Replacement" like Steve said in the Keynote. :D

Since you require (((A))) computer (Mac or PC) to be able to load iTunes, it'll never replace a computer (a household computerless, with only an iPad.

(the iTunes grumble is in there, somewhere)

Uh, no, that's not what I meant.
I meant: maybe you need a MacBook (or other computer) instead of an iPad.

I'm listening. What did I say that's wrong?

As other posters have noted, "just adding a USB port" means adding device drivers for everything users will think they can plug into it. That just runs contrary to what the iPad is - which isn't a straight-up notebook replacement.

You fella - are asking for something that is only an app away!

Same with the m-audio keyboard guy - when iLife gets the iWork treatment we are going to have a scary-fun toy!

Its a fine line between a "wish list" and a "please want no got sulk waaa" strop.

One has a hopeful eye on the future, the other is bitter that it isn't here.

"sisahaw" - yes - the possibility of recording guitars and jamming with loops is something that I am SO waiting for too.

In fact.....

Most of my demos were recorded with the mic-in into garageband - so we are only an adaptor away from plug in - phones out.

Still waiting for pocket ipad with camera - but the future has never looked so exciting.

I figured that. Everything is in place already. Its up to the Devs now. I forgot that they probably don't have all the things they need yet either like the usb-cam kit. I'm waiting patiently then.

Yes, yes, I have (iMac and a still-working iBook). iPad is a great device, and would be greater for portable music and photo editing with some improvement in the inputs, that's all I'm saying. A lot of creative types use Apple products, and there's no reason why the iPad couldn't do light duty in creative areas as well as consuming media. I'm NOT dissing the iPad at all, but I'd like to voice my opinion on the subject of inputs because I think it can be improved there. In fact, I'd put money down that gen 2 will at least get an SD card slot.

Don't get your knickers in a twist, bro.

Cool! I discovered Garage Band when I was demoing Ableton Live, which is rather expensive, and I tried Garage Band--maybe there's one or two things it can't do, but--so much easier! So powerful if you look into it a little! And FREE!

Trying not to. Just having fun with enthusiastic discussions, and using them to refine my understanding of the iPad.
Lots of people ARE getting their knickers twisted for lack of USB. I'm convinced its absence is, on the whole, a good thing. The recurring point of the iPad is _wireless_ and _future_, not wired compatibility with the past. Rather exciting methinks.

That's the point of this thread's lead article: part of our intention to provide this, that the cost and reliability of developing these solutions is mitigated and made more reliable as you can use off-the-shelf parts, etc. To build such a device, one can just use an existing cheap/good digital audio conversion chip that supports standard USB audio protocol. I imagine while we're yammering on about this, someone is wiring up a prototype and will have a product announced next week and shipping the week after.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/5.0.17405/764; U; en) Presto/2.4.15)

Better work with CF cards somehow

That would be useful for things like scratch live does anyone know if it will support USB input devices like a space navigator as well?

That would be awesome, but you would have to 100% plan your DJ gigs out before you left the house. Right now I keep my music on a 1TB hard drive, and have 50,000+ songs to choose from at all my gigs.

My iPad holds 16 gigs. If I was going to run Scratch Live on it... Wow... That would be tough to settle on only 1000-2000 songs.

I mean, actually I could, but then I wouldn't be able to take requests!

FYI, I think it would be more important for Apple to focus on letting us use this USB camera connector to actually hook up a USB hard drive for reading photos, music, and movies!! C'mon Apple!!!!!!!!!!!

Pick the good ones, you know - the ones that don't sound like each other? :D

Surely a good DJ would have the taste to know that just because some ASKS for Fleetwood mac's Tusk in the middle of a drum and bass night - doesn't mean it would be the right choice....

It's a great idea, however the iPad lacks the power needed to run the programs that would otherwise now be usable.

I mean at this point why not run abletion Live on your iPad, oh yeah, that's right. It's a phone. not a computer.

I guarantee that a developer will eventually come up with an app that can do 90% of what Ableton or Garage Band can do for the iPad. That plus the high level of portability=winner. And it'll fit easily on a music stand. And then an input will suddenly become usable.

Go learn what abelton does. I'd be impressed if an app for the ipad did 10% of what it does.

only good things can come of this.. i have already read an article previously of a guy using 3/4 iphones on stage in a gig with music coming out of each. So an ipad doing sommat similar with designated audio drivers is only like 4 or 5 times better lol.. i can imagine these things being picked up by the experimental types and being used for vocoders n voice modellers good stuff can come out of this, n future rev ipads :)

I'm kinda hoping that the USB port will support USB keyboards (for taking notes). Maybe a mighty-mouse, too.

(yes, I know there's the keyboard-dock, and support for bluetooth keyboards... neither of those are what I want)

that would be nice, I wish Apple would release a bluetooth full-sized keyboard with the numeric keypad.
