So far (*knock on wood) the iPad Mini 4 has been like the iPad 2 for me (but even better.)
I got one for $80 at Best Buy with some free gift cards and points. I got it because it’s still my favorite size and I need it as I sold my iPPs in hopes Apple releases a true bezeless no-home button iPP in the next 6 weeks. lol

Kallum.
$80? Can’t beat that!

I think its a little snappier in the betas of 12. Should only get better as they iron out the bugs.

Thanks, i bought it anyway
I love small form factor
I am switching back from iPad Pro 10.5 / iPhone X to iPhone SE / iPad Mini 4 no matter if Apple decide to upgrade these beautiful piece of jewelry

Is the iPad mini 4 worth it? It’s really hard to answer that question. Depends on the person. All I can say is I LOVE the iPad mini form factor. For me, it’s the perfect travel size tablet. I am still using my iPad mini 2 which is 5 yrs old. Although I love the form factor, I have to admit, it is annoyingly slow. Frustrating really. I was hoping for an iPad mini update. My dream would be an iPad mini with reduced bezels, making the 7.9” screen 8.5” and with pencil support. However, it really looks like the iPad mini will be discontinued.

As much as I love the iPad mini form factor, I can’t bring myself to buy the iPad mini 4 which is already 3 years old. I just can’t. Even if it may be useful for some...I wan’t more power & longevity as well in my next iPad purchase. The iPad mini 4 is already too long in the tooth for me to plunk down good money for it. If I was just gonna surf the web and send emails with it....maybe. But even then, my iPad mini 2 which is just two yrs older is frustratingly slow in surfing the web and loading pages. I can foresee the iPad 4 beginning to choke on simple tasks too soon for my liking. Even with the rumors of iOS 12 improving things, I won’t buy one.

So, I wait for the next iPad Pro update. Hoping against hope that an updated mini will appear alongside them. If not, I will nab one of the new 10.5” pros as my new travel photo & video editing iPad.

I agree with your post until the end. I cannot bring myself to buy a big iPad. If I can't easily put it in my jacket pocket and need to tote a bag, my macbook pro 2017 is going in it, not an iPad.

I hear ya, but I don’t own a MacBook...so the larger iPad will pull double duty. I find for web surfing, emailing and photo & video editing while on the road, it’s all I need right now. So baring Apple updating the iPad mini this fall, it looks like a new 10.5” iPad Pro + the 6.5” iPhone X plus will be my travel combo.

I bought a 128GB iPad mini 4 last February and have no regrets. Alongside my 5th gen iPad 9.7 it’s a perfect combination. The bigger iPad for home and the mini for traveling. I can store lots of movies, games, books, and TV shows on it and it works great for internet and email while traveling. I don’t know why people say it’s laggy because it’s not laggy at all for me on iOS 11.4.1. I don’t have a Pro to compare it with, but it feels just as snappy as my iPhone 7 or iPad. The only time it feels slower is when it takes a bit longer to start up some games like Civ VI.

I hope Apple releases a new mini but it’s looking doubtful. Regardless of it being old tech, I’d still pick up another mini 4 if mine broke, was stolen, or if I lost it. It’s such a great little iPad.

Just picked one of these up with the BB sale. Had one that I sold last year as I picked up the 10.5 Pro, but really started missing the smaller form recently. I had $110 in BB rewards and gc's so it brought it down to about $180 after tax. Had been holding out hope that a new one would come out next month, but for $180 vs. paying $5-600 for a new one, I think I'll be good. Maybe drop some money on some Matte Black Airpods from Apple??? Haha, one can dream, right?

I like (and need) to take with me in my daily commute a mini-sized tablet. If Apple drops the mini, I am not going to buy one of the bigger iPads, I am just switching to a mini-sized Android device.

What's left out there in the Android world for 8"? Google completely abandoned the market. I don't think Samsung released a 8" this time around. I guess there are a few cheapie really bad android tablets from China. I'm honestly curious as I would love a 8" tablet that is better than the mini. I had a MiPad 2 for a while which is almost the same as an ipad but with windows on it, super nice tablet but didn't last long due to Xiaomi quality, or lack of it.

But I just can't find anything to beat the mini, especially in something like battery life. I'm not a big fan of iOS on tablets at all, but feel I don't have much of a choice if I want quality hardware and all day battery life. If Apple did discontinue the mini it would leave a big hole in the 8" market.

Well, the current offer by Samsung is the Galaxy Tab S2 8.0". I guess it is not a new (from this year) model. However, with an octa-core CPU it is much more powerful than the iPad mini, on paper at least. I don't know though how this is translated to everyday use, but I cannot picture such a device with 1.8 GHz Quad + 1.4 GHz Quad as slower than the current mini. Furthermore, it supports storage extension through a microSD card.

I like the idea that someone posited elsewhere about a 9.7” bezeless iPad with a form factor no more than maybe an inch or so larger than the mini. I’d get that. Hopefully we get one of those next year.

The current mini being 4 what do you mean by slow? The only slow thing I notice is the fingerprint reader. Other than that all is swell.

The 8” Galaxy Tab S2 is actually a bit slower in single core, but it does slightly better on multi core and has a better display (with more vivid color and accuracy compared to the 4’s traditional non DCI P3 or OLED display.) The iPad Mini 4 is quite a bit snappier for me on every iOS update I’ve had (compared to the Samsung tab S’)
*knock on wood that my iPad mini 4 stays good, lol.
Despite Apple’s lower clock speeds sometimes, their chips are still drastically superior to Snapdragon chips. Apple just needs to do to 6, 8, or 10 core Ax processors with any tablet or phone, and all iOS devices should have no less than 4GB RAM. Those are the areas where Samsung is doing it right, but Android just does not optimize or work with the hardware nearly as good as iOS.
