Sorry, I should have been clearer. I meant I would be more likely to buy a 256GB Mini 6 than a Mini 7. eSim is indeed not great in the UK, and I have a no longer available to new customers tariff I want to keep.

A17 Pro is disappointing also, being last year’s chip. When released, the Mini 6 had the latest with the A15, albeit downclocked.
What network is the sim on? Usually you can do a sim swap to eSIM with out any other changes. I had to ditch Smarty on my iPad when I went to the M4 pro as they don’t do eSIM, but I found an alternative in spusu

If you check on the Apple website under compatibility it does say they are compatible with the 6th gen iPad Mini.
Well, that’s good. But it doesn’t make sense why they’re calling the new ones A17 Pro. Instead of just showing one page of the extended color option

iPad can’t receive SMS which may be required to receive OTPs for SIM registration in countries where there’s a KYC requirement.
Anything like a KFC requirement?! 🙈

An ET or spy who learned basic English would have a hard time figuring this out.

SMS, OTP, SIM, KYC…

For that matter, I still laughed even though I know two of them. It's like a coded message…

Imagine if a SETI receiver picked that up! 😁

It’s great and basically like a Semi Pro iPad now with its A17 ‘Pro’ SoC with 8GB RAM, and can use the new Pencil Pro, only thing missing is 120 hz VRR screen.

SoC, VRR. Well, batting .500, good for the MLB, but not MI6 or the CIA!

Suppose it's time to use a Translator app — or dictionary. Would that even work? The NOAD included with all Apple devices came up empty on many.

Most of those abbreviations, including my own, are gobbledygook to many readers!

——

Wait! Enough of my silliness, although I did laugh, I meant no offense. Yet, imagine non-techies trying to understand this.

Still, as to the content…

iPads can't receive SMS texts?! Whoa!

So much wrong with this statement... The chip in the iPhone 16 Pro is the A18 Pro, not the A17 Pro (that was in the iPhone 15 Pro).

Even better: It's not even the same A17 Pro as the one in the iPhone 15 Pro/Max. It only has 5 GPU cores versus 6. So it's a binned or bespoke variant. Apple can name its chips whatever it wants, of course, but this is pretty arbitrary even by their standards.

Apple has released new iPad Mini 7; it seems no changes in outlook design but the real upgrades are the doubling of RAM and storage capacity at the same SRP. That's why Apple is not making any event for iPad Mini 7 cause the deal is too good for consumers not shareholders. :p

We have been waiting for Apple to upgrade the base 4+64 to 8+128 and finally.....

We should turn to upcoming iPad 11th gen, which SoC should/would Apple choose with AI capability? M1 or ?
[per Apple] The Folio for the new Mini will not fit an Apple Pencil, which is absurdly dumb design on Apple's part IMO. Does anyone know of a good folio-type case for iPad Mini that does fit an Apple Pencil inside?

I somehow doubt it. Thankfully, I don’t notice it anyway.
Really? I don't own a mini-6, but I've easily been able to see jelly scroll (if I tried) on every demo unit I've used.
That being said, it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if I intended to buy one. It's certainly not a big deal, but it's easy to see by scrolling up and down quickly.

Not going to lie, I am a bit disappointed that it's not a bigger upgrade. But new chip and more RAM will likely lead to me getting a Mini 7. Hopefully they fixed the jelly scrolling as well, but I really don't notice it that much on my Mini 6.

I say sooner. This is a stop gap refresh
Previous rumours have been 2026 for the OLED version, so fingers crossed for the shortest gap between refreshes in almost a decade. They now seem to have established incremental updates by press release, anyway.

My sim is EE for those asking. Possible to swap online it seems, but given the prevalence of 2FA in the UK and the possibility of drawing attention to myself and being kicked off of the plan, I’d rather stick with my Mini 6. Maybe I’ll reconsider when the Mini 8 arrives.

The leaked OLED roadmap says 2027: https://www.macrumors.com/2024/02/21/apple-oled-roadmap/

And I see no reason for Apple to shorten the iPad mini release cycle. If they wanted to elevate the iPad mini to a more Pro level, they would have done it now. By the end of 2027 the entire Mac/iPhone/iPad lineup will be OLED, except possibly the basic iPad. The mini 4 to 5 update was similar in extent to the current 6 to 7 update, and it still took six years from 4 to 6. I expect the same six years from 6 to 8.

It'd be funny if it weren't so sad

OLED will be in mainstream usages seemingly for two decades before Apple uses it everywhere

The slow roll (to profit take) to end all slow rolls

It is a scam, not even M1...
The Mini eems quite strong for a 5x7 tablet to me. Please advise what the new Mini fails to accomplish because "...it is a scam, not even M1."
Note that some things like Promotion, etc. are not due to lack of M1. Just let us know what we are missing because not even M1.
