Not going to lie, I am a bit disappointed that it's not a bigger upgrade. But new chip and more RAM will likely lead to me getting a Mini 7. Hopefully they fixed the jelly scrolling as well, but I really don't notice it that much on my Mini 6.
I tested a Mini 6 for a few weeks and it was not quite there for me, but I did not notice the jelly scrolling. I will test the Mini 7 and likely buy one to replace an ancient iPad Air.

I had told myself before that a RAM upgrade and display upgrade would be enough for me to want to move to the next Mini but now I'm left wondering if the cost to upgrade to the Pencil Pro is worth it given how limited I use the Pencil now (but I do use it some).

It's interesting to me how they pushed to the Pencil Pro but didn't use the same CPU as the iPhone 16 Pro lineup.

Even better: It's not even the same A17 Pro as the one in the iPhone 15 Pro/Max. It only has 5 GPU cores versus 6. So it's a binned or bespoke variant. Apple can name its chips whatever it wants, of course, but this is pretty arbitrary even by their standards.
Yeah, I was actually pretty surprised to see the A17 Pro show up in the iPad Mini given that it is built on the less efficient & more expensive N3B process (compared to N3E that A18 is built on), but once I saw that it was a binned version of the A17 it kind of makes sense as I suspect the iPad Mini is low volume enough that they can manufacture the new Mini over the next 2-3 years using leftover reject chips from the iPhone 15 Pros without having to keep the N3B fab in production...

I'm not surprised they left if a couple of weeks before revealing it. For a lot of people it would be more sensible to buy an iPad Mini over upgrading an iPhone!

Probably the best update Apple has done in a while. The A17 is as fast as you need. By playing all the top iPad games via video out it has become a neat little console. AI is kind of useless on the iPhone but a lot better on devices you might actually write with.

This is a stupid question, but does mini 7 support Apple Pencil 2? you know, the one that was supported on mini 6. I really don’t wanna upgrade my pencil as it works with my M1 iPad Pro and I wanna use it with the mini 7, too. I have no intention of upgrading my iPad Pro for the next couple years

No. The USB-C Pencil is the only version interchangeable between a Mini 7 and a M1 Pro.

****. So, now I’m forced to buy a pencil pro for the mini 7, but keep the gen 2 pencil for my M1 iPad Pro… thanks Apple

Dang that is a major fumble

Definitely adds to the cost of upgrading for some users. Not a deal breaker for me necessarily but it is a concern. If there's still noticeable jelly scrolling on the display then I'm likely to sit this round out and wait another 3 years for the next Mini. I don't use my pencil a ton but I do use it occasionally and the need to replace it would just be one additional cost with there not being enough change elsewhere to justify the expense. I can live with the display on the Mini 6 that I have since I primarily use it in landscape orientation. I'm interested to see what the display on the 7 is truly like before making a decision.

The Mini does seem to be one of those devices where Apple's just watering down the kool aid and putting it back out on the table.

Yeah. eSIM is fine on phones. Unfortunately, support for other devices like mobile hotspots, tablets and laptops is still an afterthought.

I also swap physical SIMs between devices since I don’t want to pay for a separate plan for each of my data-only devices. eSIM only is going to make that either impossible or a lot more difficult than it used to be.

I’ve long been wanting an iPad mini with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD but the move to eSIM only is making me rethink whether I should “upgrade”.
eSIM is fine if you’re stuck on US carriers only but if you want to travel worldwide they suck. It’s far worse on the iPad though as most countries don’t even have it. Apple pushed eSIM because the carriers benefit which means AAPL benefits which means shareholders benefit which makes the board happy which ensure Timmy gets his big bonus annually.

Apple can go f*** itself.
No 120hz - No Money = End of Story.
I do not give a rats a** about anything else.

Too bad, i stay using my Lenovo y700

So the least salient feature is the only thing you care about? I'm glad Apple doesn't listen sometimes.

It is a scam, not even M1...

What, exactly, makes this a "scam." An example of a scam would be if they told you there was an M1 in it and there wasn't. But that isn't the case is it?

I thought the iPad mini was the iPad for me. Used a couple of versions over the years, and was never disappointed. Loved the size.

This year, I grabbed a refurbed M1 iPad Pro and haven't touched my mini since. I’m not seeing a compelling reason to buy into the mini 7. I guess I’ve outgrown it.

I am not an apologist of 60hz displays for the prices apple is charging and the year it is but

I think apple spoiled people with promotion to make it a requirement moving forward which I get but that also has become a burden for a consumer Imo to be required to get something only for display at a great expense and additional weight

I’ve never had a Mac laptop with 120hz so good there with my 15 inch air

iPhone I had the 14 pro max but upgraded to an 60hz iPhone 13 mini before 16+ now and will probably rotate those two. It’s a nice to have but the weight reduction and battery life on 16+ is well worth it to me beyond insanely buttery animations that often are choppy cause iOS being weird or chonky. And taking some concessions on performance and battery with the iPhone mini but that’s understood for it’s age and form factor and lack of alternative comparables

I also think low power mode is do able on 60hz displays.
On iPhone pro max low power mode was atrocious visually and I was repelled from it and not because it was 60hz but 60hz ish with a lot of obvious Jank every time.

iPad I had 2017 12.9 and now 2021 11 inch M1. Its nice but I also have a mini 5 and 6 and can totally deal without promotion. Im glad I have a big and snappy display iPad laying around but I dunno. For my use case I guess I get over it so I’m not burdened being required to have that

From memory I can tell the difference but I do t really care and if im not side by side comparing for the sake of honing in on display responsiveness it doesn’t matter… to me. There are many other characteristics of displays that are important

That said I think iPad mini 6 display jelly scrolling aside is inferior to iPad mini 5 in contrast. Not crazy about that. And iPad Pro looks so much better my 11” led m1.

Then there’s added benefit of usually a less aggressive PWM than the faster displays for people whose eyes are sensitive to that.
You’re right. Many of these things are only a problem if you have a side by side comparison.

I just can’t use screens that don’t have ProMotion: 120 hz refresh rates. I hate that Apple doesn’t have it on all their screens. So the new iPad Mini still has the 60 hz refresh rate, and that is a no go for me. Otherwise decent upgrade.
Hope they fix the jelly scroll.

But the upside is that the current lineup has all migrated to USB-C Pencil and Pencil Pro (except for the base iPad which still supports Pencil 1 and USB-C Pencil). I expect that this Pencil lineup will be in place for many years. The Pencil 1 had a flawed design and the Pencil 2 unfortunately wouldn’t work with the landscape camera in the new iPad Pro and Air.

The A17 Pro is NOT last years chip. It is the latest and greatest. Your thinking of the A16 Pro which shipped in 2023.
There was no A16 Pro, it was the A17 Pro in the iPhone 15 Pro, the A16 was in the 14 Pro and 15. The chip in the 16 is A18 and the chip in the 16 Pro is A18 Pro

FINALLY!! But why the hell did they wait sooo long to release it when it's just a spec bump??
Still makes it a decent iPad again. A17 Pro chip is very nice... it'll allow it to run all those high end games.
A sign of Apple wanting to cancel iPad mini line after a few years? So they bump it up as much as possible.
Given the unpopularity in small devices I suspect iPad mini will probably be discontinued in a few years.

I have the 64gb and it’s almost unusable for anything but web browsing. Unless you turn off Photos and iMessage. Even Notes takes up too much room for such a measly storage. Should have returned it right away but it just felt odd to spend so much more on a tiny extra bit of storage. Lesson learned.

Apple devices are almost all great but maxing out the storage makes them so much more usable. It’s always been the problem in a way. The old iMac with the Fusion Drive was the worst thing they ever made. SSD’s changed everything. The stinginess on storage is gross but there’s nothing that can be done about it, except vent on macrumors every few months. That’s working out ok for me tbh.

[per Apple] The Folio for the new Mini will not fit an Apple Pencil, which is absurdly dumb design on Apple's part IMO. Does anyone know of a good folio-type case for iPad Mini that does fit an Apple Pencil inside?
I bought this one a long time ago, and it works well. My two gripes are that the pencil is on the wrong side for charging, and that the pencil is a bit hard to get out. But overall I’m happy with it.

Its great and basically like a Semi Pro iPad now with its A17 ‘Pro’ SoC with 8GB RAM, and can use the new Pencil Pro, only thing missing is 120 hz VRR screen.
…and Thunderbolt and Face ID.

But maybe more importantly, Stage Manager and (advanced) external display support.

Apple now offering three storage sizes instead of two may be evidence to the contrary though.
