I dunno if it's 99.9% (probably 70%), but I know a few avid Apple fans who can't tell the difference or don't care about 60 vs 120hz. Probably more in the minority as far as us tech geeks are concerned, but that type of user still exists.
I notice it immediately and if you're a gamer, you'll notice it for sure.

They dont know what a nit is. The don't care either. If they are buying an iPad mini they want a powerful, portable device.
Maybe in your completely indoor world they don't care. For people who want a tablet to use outside 500 nits just doesn't work. There is no splitting hairs and what's funny you claim we don't care but tablets/phones that have 800 nits or more actively market that feature knowing those of use who want a portable device we can take to the park have all experienced the concept of a screen not bright enough.

I think everyone here has to keep in mind that 99.9% of the world has no idea what a 120htz refresh rate is. They dont know what a nit is. The don't care either. If they are buying an iPad mini they want a powerful, portable device. For $499, with 8gb of RAM and 128GB SSD, this is an amazing device. Is it a “pro” device? No. You’re not going to do “pro” work on it. There are iPads for that if you so desire at double the price. Since the first iPad mini, I have loved this device. Not everyone is a tech nerd like us. This is a great device. Enjoy it. Don’t overthink it.

Not everybody knows what 120Hz is or what Nits are. However, they know that “it’s smoother” or “it’s brighter under the sun”.

Thread ended.

Just picked up mine today.

Could Apple have done better, or at the very least delivered this update sooner? Absolutely.

But it is still hands down the best tablet for me. I haven’t been able to put it down since I started setting it up (setting up from scratch). It does the things I use an iPad for (ebook and manga reading mainly) perfectly. The performance is improved enough compared to my mini 5 that even though the refresh rate is still 60hz and there is jelly scroll (sadness) scrolling sites like Macrumors still feels better. The form factor is perfect. iPadOS leaves something to be desired but that’s a whole other issue.

Also the bezels are the perfect size and everyone who wants them slimmed down can ****. I finally have a small iPad that feels comfortable to hold without a case which was my number 1 reason for upgrading from the mini 5.

120Hz? What's that?

Seriously though, I've been gaming almost exclusively on a Steam Deck so 30-40 fps has become the norm for me. The Nintendo Switch is even worse. I feel like that one dips to sub-20 fps a lot of times. :p
Howwwwwwwling!

£499 for a smaller M1 iPad Pro that's faster at localised AI calculations seems like a good deal to me!

I believe it.
I have family members that can’t tell HD from SD with movies

(I’m not joking)

Lol, I remember showing my aunt the screen on the iPad 2 and iPad 3 (dark text on light background). She asked me what’s the difference since she couldn’t see a difference between the screens. :p

agreed

people need to see what it's mainly used for instead of wanting it to be more.

It might be true that the mini 7 is "great for what it is." But the point that people are making is that, after having waited for so long, the mini 7 should have upgraded "what it is." The washing board is still great as a washing board, but we shouldn't need to use a washing board at all now. It should be categorically upgraded to a washing machine after such a long period. And when you should have a washing machine, the washing board sucks.

A17 pro chip, double the storage, and double the RAM? Able to run the latest software? Not the old washing board…

The discounts have begun on the Mini 7. $449 for the 128GB model at MicroCenter.

What are retailers going to do with the remaining 256GB wifi versions of the Mini 6? The best deal I’m seeing is $500 at Amazon (shipped/sold by Amazon). That’s not good enough. I’d go for the Mini 7 128GB…all day long at $449. I’d have to see the 256GB mini 6 on deep clearance (e.g. 1 day flash sale) at $399 to opt for it at this point.

The 2027 iPad mini 8 will probably get the 120hz display, thinner bezels & face ID… but the mini 7 is a decent update. Especially for someone like me who’s coming from an iPad mini 5, it’s a HUGE upgrade! But even if I had an iPad mini 6, I’d still upgrade for the faster chip, faster wifi, faster usb-c, double the ram, and being an artist, apple pencil pro support! My iPad Pro is my main content creation device, but when I really want to travel light, I always grab my iPad mini. It’s the perfect size digital sketchbook when on the go.

Overall, I agree with the OP, the mini 7 is an excellent tablet with its portable size being its biggest draw. I would like to see the brightness updated to 800 or better although I am not going to hold my breath for 2+ years. If I need to use the iPad outside, I will use my 11” M4, as that is one of the reasons I bought it.

I would like to see a pro mini. At the same time, I know that that is unrealistic of me. Apple is not going to do that and risk taking sales away from the 11” and 13” Pro models, especially with such a small niche group of users. I just don’t see the general public willing to spend $900 on a corvette mini.

Where the hell is it even relevant to flick the screen back and forth rapidly to say OMG it’s jellyscroll. Get out of here.
What I can categorically say is this:

When I bought my mini 6, and before i had even heard of ‘jelly scroll’, one of the first things I thought when used it in portrait orientation was ‘why is this damn thing scrolling diagonally?’

I genuinely thought it was a faulty screen.

It wasn’t until I started doing some research that I realised ‘well ****, this is what they say is normal?’

So my point is - while it may not be an issue for you, or even noticeable, please understand that for many of us it is a very real phenomenon.

That just the same as the education discount in the states and just a move to try to attract those buyers. ;)

You can hardly find any Androids devices with a 60hz screen right now.
Also, consider Apple build an iPad pro back in 2019 with a 120hz screen, so there's nothing technical.
The only thing behind the 60hz screen is product strategy to screw more money, nothing else.
By the way, I bought the 256gb blue mini 7, I like the device, but if apple still do this thing to mini 8, they will be damned.

Same here. The blue iPad mini looks quite good. I upgraded from the mini 6 due to the processor and RAM upgrades. The screen is so so, and it leaves a lot to be desired. I think more nits is even more important than 120Hz. Damn just upgrade it to 600 nits and 90Hz and call it a day. But that’s Apple, if they do that, we can expect $100-150 increase in price.

But now comes to the reality. As a companion device mainly used when I travel, I always only buy the lowest storage option plus cellular. I just want the lowest cost - cellular is needed when I travel.

So now it’s good to have 128GB since 64GB is totally not sufficient. I’m selling the mini 6 to get back some of the money so the cost is more justified.

What would you have Apple do to it?

It's essentially an Air, without the M-series CPU.

People complaining about them really just need something to complain about. The ultra slim ones on the 16 Pro are too thin and I find myself accidentally catching the edge of the screen just holding it - but it's what the complainers would want on an iPad, and that's just not practical nor desirable.

Anything along those lines would be extremely welcome (and quite overdue at this point)

I can tell the difference between pro motion and a 60HZ Apple screen, but I personally have never seen Jelly Scroll in an Apple device, and I don't go looking for it either.
You didn't need to go looking for it on the Mini 6, it slapped you about the face.
