I thought apple was supposed to be the choice of the musician/artist?

What musician/artist is going to rely on their device's built-in speakers for their work anyway?

----------

Nobody's disagreeing that the current Mini has two. There's questions about whether the new Mini and the Air have two.

Clint

I'd like the iPad Air to have stereo speakers... but what's the point if you only get the stereo effect in portrait mode?

Most people would just be using headphones anyway, but the single speaker is fine for FaceTime, casual music listening, and watching cat videos.

I've got an iPad Mini, had the iPad 3 and 2 before. And I can honestly say I haven't noticed any real improvement in the sound quality of the mini vs the others. Video watching is done almost entirely in landscape mode (as you said), and how much stereo separation are you going to get from two speakers 2" away from each other anyway.

So yes, I'd like the Air to have stereo speakers as well, but it won't dissuade me from buying one if it doesn't.

I think it will help that the iPad Air (and Mini) at least projects the sound out sideways rather than out the back. :)

I'm inclined to think it still has two speakers, otherwise that second grille really is useless, since the mics are near the top and at the top of the device.

Guess we'll have to wait till next week!

The iPad 2, 3 and 4 DO have stereo speakers internally. Just try playing an old 60s stereo song with extreme stereo separation. They're just too close together to hear real stereo sound in regular use.

However, who in their right mind would use these speakers for anything other than alert sounds anyway, they're too small anyhow to produce decent quality. That said, an iPad dóes sound better than a Nexus 7, fuller.

The Mic is on top just like in the old iPad mini. This is an iPad, not iPhone, of what use would a mic have at the bottom?

They changed the picture on the website to show it has 2 speakers now.

If mini retina has two speakers, then obviously it will be better than iPad air. In portrait mode is not useful for video through.

iPad Mini retina and iPad air both have stereo speakers. The only issue is stereo separation since they are close together. Honestly, the website shows a lack of attention to detail which I think is a bad thing for Apple. They need that Draconian style of management again because these small things lead to bigger problems over time. The speakers on the new iPads aren't really meant for serious listening. They are just designed to give enough sound to enjoy some music when you're not around a serious stereo or surround system. At least they are better than some of the computer speakers that are out there.

I am wondering if those two speakers are still in mono status, otherwise they will affect each other because so close?

Those who have the 2013 Nexus 7, did you notice the dynamic left/right speaker assignment? I noticed it while watching Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol on Netflix. The scene when they opened the sliding door on the van with the Russian from prison, you can heard the stereo effect as the door slides open. I thought to myself let's see what happens if I rotate the thing the other way. Much to my surprise it indeed flipped the left/right channel matching the orientation.

When you flip it you'll notice a very brief (almost unnoticeable) cutout of the sound. I really love that about the Nexus 7. Sadly it's the only thing I like about it.

Unless Apple puts left and right speakers in the landscape orientation, it's pointless to have "stereo" speakers.

No, its not pointless. I'd rather have two speakers than just one even though it will not be in landscape. Only way around this is to have four speakers and that is not going to happen. That includes the other android tablets. They to do not have them for both orientations.

Not mono. If the iPad 4 has two speakers, so does the iPad 5. Apple would not do this to us

I think they would totally do it; they already did it with the base 15" rMBP by removing the dedicated GPU, I could totally see them doing it with the rMini. I guess we need somebody to actually test it and find out, though.
