No, its not pointless. I'd rather have two speakers than just one even though it will not be in landscape. Only way around this is to have four speakers and that is not going to happen. That includes the other android tablets. They to do not have them for both orientations.

With the iPad, you have sound in 270 degrees of rotation. With the Nexus 7, you have sound regardless of how you place the tablet. You do not need 4 speakers in either case, just speakers on opposite sides of the tablet.

While you can get away with calling the iPad sound 'stereo', as I'm sure different sounds come out of each of the speakers, it does the human ear no good since the distance between the two speakers is nil. In Apples case, you are essentially getting mono sound. It might as well be one speaker with dual zones.

That said, mono does not necessarily mean quieter. How loud a tablet can get, may very well make a huge difference to the consumer (not the number or placement of the speakers).
The iPad could very well produce louder sound than a Nexus 7, but there will always be a difference. Sound from the Nexus 7 (which has speakers on each side in landscape mode) will always produce 'stereo' sound, while an iPad will always produce Mono sound. This is a hardware issue by placement of the speakers. Which tablet produces a better experience is up to each individual.

**Note: People seem to be confusing the terms of stereo and mono. (And there is no such thing as stereo or mono speakers. There are only speakers.)

Are we talking about the new 2013 Nexus?

My Nexus 7 speakers sound good and loud to me. Maybe not AS crisp as my friends iPad 3 but pretty crisp, and they don't sound horrible at all. I think some people are way too critical. For tablet speakers, the Nexus 7 has pretty good audio and the speaker placement is perfect for watching movies, or Netflix. Check reviews, tech sites across the board pretty much gave the speakers a thumbs up. And the N7's "Fraunhofer Cingo" virtual surround sound makes for a pretty cool effect.

And I can think of another thing that makes the (current) iPad mini not as good. The display. 323ppi (Nexus) vs 163 ppi (mini)? Horrible. N7 has one of the sharpest displays on the market. The display ALONE makes me love this little thing.

Also under the hood the N7 whips the mini...

Dual core 1,000 Mhz ARM Cortex A9 cpu, Apple A5 chip, 512MB RAM (iPad mini) or...

Quad Core 1.5 Ghz Krait cpu, Qualcomm Snapdragon S4pro chip, Adreno 320 gpu and 2GB of RAM (nexus 7).

Nexus 7 has wireless charging, a portable slim and lightweight form factor and is priced right. Runs the coveted stock Android buttery smooth, multitasks extremely well and gets instant updates. The new mini will have better specs and a screen that FINALLY matches the Nexus 7, but will be near double the price. Of course the current mini is a year old but we can only compare what is currently out.

No brainer to me. Nexus 7 kicks major butt and does it cheap. Have you seen benchmarks? Wasn't it considered to perform almost as well as the iPad 4? I don't get why the Nexus 7 get's so much hate. What's to hate about it? And before you answer that, consider the price. The only negative thing that I can even think of is the smaller screen. I happen to love it, and love how it's so portable, but some might find it cramped if they are used to an iPad sized screen.

My Nexus 7 speakers are alright.
My iPad mini speakers are alright.

Neither are mindblowing.

HTC's Boomsound speakers on the One however are far, far better than either of them. :D

No, it's not. You just don't notice how crappy they are. I have two new Nexus 7s, and both of them have awful sound at low volume levels. You can hear static/electrical buzzing the entire time any sound is playing.

Can't wait to replace them with iPads again. Not really sure what I was thinking... Oh yeah... high resolution is what got me, when the mini was stuck at 1024x768.

Not for much longer, though...

Speaker on my New Nexus 7 is way better than my iPad....barely hear the iPad speakers...just admit it....Sheep status is a go.

Sheep status? Seriously? Would you like me to post a picture of my Nexus 7? I own one (two, actually - wife has one as well and can't wait to get back to an iPad!) I just don't feel like I have to justify any purchase just because I bought it. I'm quite comfortable in admitting I made a mistake in purchasing the Nexus 7 because it's not in the same league as an iPad.

Is the sound good on an iPad? Absolutely not! It's actually quite poor! But the sound on an iPad doesn't CRACKLE at low volumes due to a static problem, like it does with EVERY Nexus 7:

And look, here's me in July commenting on the sound issue with the Nexus 7. Am I still a sheep?

At the time, there was no Retina display iPad mini or a lighter than 1.4lb Retina-equipped iPad, so the Nexus was a logical choice for both myself and the wife.

Just admit it. You got suckered in by the low price on the Nexus 7. I know I did.

But when you pay more for an iPad, you get an INFINITELY better experience. I'll be buying two this Friday.

Actually my Nexus 7 does everything my iPad can do...and better. But then again, my iPad 3 was destroyed by iOS7...even with the updates. If the iPad mini 2 was cheaper...I'd consider it just to use for movies for my son. But that price...I mean come on

I edited my post, for clarification.

Yes, the price is a lot. But you get a much better experience. And no, your Nexus 7 can't do everything your iPad can, and better. But this is a pointless argument. If you can deal with the slow touch response, poor build quality and slow browsing experience (compared to an iPad 4 or iPhone 5 / 5s), then great. I can't even get Plex to work flawlessly on the Nexus 7 without dropping frames, whereas it's a joy on the iPad.

I'm happy to pay more for a higher-quality experience. And I will. :) Enjoy your Nexus 7.

Please stop acting as if your opinion is a fact.

Not everyone agrees that iPads do things better. I use my room mates and my parents iPads all the time and they are great devices. But don't act like because you don't like your N7, that everyone made a poor decision in purchasing one. Do iPads have a better selection of apps and more apps that are created for tablet use? Absolutely, but besides that, whats really so much better? They look pretty, yes. Good battery life? Absolutely. But what is so outstanding? I am very pleased with every aspect of my n7 and find it just as pleasant to use as an iPad. I appreciate the N7 more because its lighter and palmable, something an iPad or mini lack. Everyone has different wants/needs in devices.

And by the way, my Nexus 7 is super fast browsing on Chrome.
I did side by side tests of my 5S vs N7 and the N7 would actually load quicker than the 5S...and keep in mind the 5S is loading mobile version, vs the Nexus loading desktop. CNN, Yahoo and AOL websites all loaded quicker on the Nexus. The one thing I noticed the 5S did better was being quicker at image rendering.

Comparing even full sized iPads to the N7 is silly. They are in completely different classes and one is almost $300 more. For people that don't find it necessary to spend $500-600 on a tablet and look at cheaper options, the new N7 is a steal. You get a lot of tablet on a small screen for a small price. Anyone who says anything different either hasn't actually owned one or isn't willing to give Android a spin (strictly Apple fans).

When I was looking for a tablet and doing research, every site I found listed the 2013 Nexus 7 as the best bang for the buck and the most sought after small tablet. And after owning one I agree 110%. I feel like it was a great purchase and will stay relevant and fast for quite a while. I can't wait to run 4.4 on it and I have no doubt it will run it seamlessly.

The Nexus 7 is way overlooked and underestimated by many people.

This is unfortunate because it really is one of the best tablets money can buy and it does it at nearly half the cost of the iPad Mini.

I've said negative things about the nexus 7 on occasion and I fully admit to being wrong. It's a very competitive product that may not have the refinement of the iPad and iOS but it's incredibly versatile and capable.

iPad killer? No. iPad competitor? Absolutely.

Never mind Ashton Kutcher, but these new Lenova tablets are interesting: http://9to5google.com/2013/10/30/as...nces-new-android-yoga-tablets-w-18hr-battery/

18 hour battery life. It'll be interesting to see reviews.

Considering it's priced at $249 for the 8 inch and $299 for the 10 inch? I don't know...

I guess but seems like reducing memory to reduce cost serves less benefit to a consumer than slapping an extra 1gb ram and charging $20 more.

User experience would be vastly better served with an extra 1gb on an android tablet than the potential $ price saving.

Battery life is cool but I'm not a fan of that asymmetrical design with the cylindrical edge on one side. Also all other pics I've seen show a big gross logo in landscape orientation on the bezel.

This design just failed.

My iPad mini's speakers were only good enough to hear alert tones.

With the N7's speakers, i'm using them as studio monitors to mix Lady Gaga's new album.
