The minis color looks washed out to me like others had said. The mini has a better screen for books and Air has a better screen in general.

I've tested with movies, pictures and website side by size and from about 2-3 feet away, so far the retina Mini blows the Air out of the water in terms of sharpness. Some of you may be confusing tint with brightness which is a setting. No tint on the rMini here. Really crisp.

Really? Maybe I need my eyes checked.....

Looking at my pics on the RMini and Air with both at the same brightness setting, I too noticed a slight washed out effect on the RMini. The colors on the Air are more vibrant. Pics are still great on the RMini by itself.

Why are you peeps having the habit of buying something and returning it. Why not check and see if you like it in the store before buying.

Wasting the effort to buy and return and buy. C'mon guys! Spare a thought as this policy is not meant to be use this way.

Have you been to an Apple store? Last time I checked the brightness of the fluorescent lights in the Apple store are close to the level of the sun itself :D

Seriously though.....things look different in the Apple store than in a normal setting.

1. There are no Retina minis on display.
2. You will be examining in under Apple floodlights.
3. The unit you take home will not necessary be defect-free like the display model.

Hello,

bought two Minis with RD today. Both WIFI only. One with 32 GB (for my wife) and one with 64 GB (for me :) ).
The displays are totally different concerning the colors and the maximum brightness.
I think the 32 GB one has been produced earlier because the battery was at 80 %.
The 64 GB ones battery was at 94 %.

First, both have the yellow tint versus the home button. The 64 GB is really bad. I noticed it right on the welcome screen (Hello...Hallo, etc...).

Concerning the displays here is what I saw:

- The 64 GB model is "dull". Washed out colors, low maximum brightness.
White has a yellow tint.

- The 32 GB has vibrant colors. Maximum brightness is significant higher.
White has a blue tint.

I will return the 64 GB. This is absolutely not acceptable for me.
Concerning the 32 GB i`m not sure. The visibility of the yellow tint towards the bottom varies on the content. But I bought an apple iPad and no 100 EUR android-device, so I think I can expect some kind of quality.

BTW: I had to return my iPad air twice, to get a good one (but it has minor display issues, too).
All airs I saw so far (might be 10 or 11) had the "book-spine effect" and tend to yellow on the left side of the screen.
Don`t know whats going on now, but my previous apple-products were perfect.

Because we are playing the screen lottery. Unlike a lottery ticket if we get a screen thats a looser we can return or exchange it. Its our right :). I ordered the 32 and if i feel the screen is subpar i will compare it to the air and keep the better of the 2.

I also noticed the colors were a hair(very very slight) less saturated than my iPhone and the iPad Airs I saw on display.

Either way, I was very happy to get a 32GB model that had no nasty yellow tint in any part of the screen. To be honest I was expecting the worst with how poor Apple QC has been the last few years. Overal it still looks gorgeous, but I did notice the very slight color difference since I have a good eye.

I just ordered mine online and hope it does not arrive with a poor screen. I am knit picky as well. I will keep it if it arrives the way I want it and it goes back if it comes with a poor screen that has washed out colors or yellowish tint to it.

There were retina minis on display at 4:00 PM EST at the Apple Store in Greenville SC. I'd a taken a picture if I could.

I'm curious. So you get one and, being like a screen connoisseur you see something you don't like. What do you do then?

Just curious

from what i have read, there is more than one display supplier for the ipad mini. it is entirely possible that they got different characteristics, which would also explain the different experiences with it.

also happened with the macbook pro retina, where everyone hoped to get the better samsung display instead of the (i think) LG panel.

Those of you comparing your new rMini side by side with other Minis, Airs, Androids etc: Make sure you are doing Apples to Apples (so to speak...)

1. Use a nice photo - something bright and colorful with a full range of colors and tones, dark to light.

2. Obviously use that exact same photo file (same res., etc) for all comparing devices.

3. Observe both under identical lighting conditions. If you are in a sunlit room, avoid any areas with direct sunlight that will skew lighting according to proximity to a sunny window. If you are indoors and it is evening, you need a room with completely even lighting. Maybe a smallish bathroom (or similar) that has CFL lighting. Expect confused looks when you walk into a WC with several iPads tucked under your arm. :D

4. Turn on the iPads for at least a minute to let all phosphors warm up.

5. This is the most CRITICAL part - Brightness is EVERYTHING. All iPads must have equal brightness. Assume no iPads are created equal, even if you are comparing two rMinis. Unfortunately, this is not an easy thing to equalize. The best way is to have access to a camera with a spot meter. Set the iPad screen to uniform gray, aim the camera screen center at identical distances and adjust one or the other iPad's brightness setting to get a match with the other, trying to keep it as bright as possible.

This is the only way, anything else is conjecture. Once setup, look at one iPad, close your eyes briefly, then look at the other. Close your eyes again and look at both. You might have someone come it and switch the position of the two iPads randomly to see if you get constant results. Then invite some "fresh eyes" to see if they concur.

I'm a professional photographer who has spent countless thousands of hours color timing images with Lightroom and Photoshop. I have also worked on visual effects in film production (a rather well known facility that was/is an industry leader). Comparing two iPads, two photographs or two 35mm film frames that have identical images absolutely requires a bit of care to get accurate results.

Hmm. Interesting. So color accuracy on the Mini is still not as good as Air despite the same resolution?

I guess it's the same case with iphone 4 and iPod Touch 4th gen back then, only to a smaller degree?

Color Reproduction and resolution are two, often completely unrelated properties of a display. Not all displays of the same resolution are alike-- not even close.

Got a 32gb wifi mini today and I'm also seeing a slight yellow tint near the home button. Checked in the store with 100% brightness and I wasn't seeing it, but once I turned down the brightness at home I am seeing it slightly.

That's usually the way with those store lights. Everything looks different in the store!

I got a Retina iPad Mini just a couple hours ago and I don't see any problems with my screen.

I'm afraid my rMini is going back. I'm sending this from a perfect iPad Air display. My Mini was marred by lower 1/4 of the display with that yellowing thing. Was trying to talk myself out of it being an issue, but I KNOW it is there, as this display I'm typing on is not like that at all. Shame QC seems so shaky at times.

The 15" rMBP has LG and Samsung. LG tend to be cooler (blue) and Samsung tend to be warm (yellow). People prefer the warmer Samsung panel because it does not suffer from image retention. Apple historically has used cooler color temp than other electronics, which makes warmer color temp ever so more apparent to their consumer base. There were similar issues with the iPhone 4. Apple will eventually say a range is acceptable. Uneven tinting they've never accepted.

I do notice a tint difference but the color saturation is perfect for me. I guess you sacrifice tint for excellent retina quality. I'll take that trade off.

I'm picking my Mini up in a couple hours. I'll likely camp out at a Starbucks to set it up, and if the color issue is true, it's getting returned immediately.

Return it immediately and get an AIR ;)

On an impulse I picked up a white t-mobile version 64g and the yellow is less noticeable to me. Its definitely still there very slightly just not as pronounced and what i consider to be acceptable/wont get on my nerves.

Ill be returning my wifi version this weekend and think i landed on the one i want.
