Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

While I would love onboard file management, I have found MobileMe iDisk to be a viable workaround for the lack of a file system, certainly for smaller files like photos and documents.

I thought MobileMe iDisk was not working properly with ipad yet??

I can get the MobileMe iDisk to work fine on my iPad - but only to view files. If, for example, I have a Keynote presentation onmy iDisk that I want to work on in Keynote for iPad there is no way to get that file without plugging in to iTunes. I can get it with the iDisk app - but only view it with the iDisk app. It is not accessible for Keynote on the iPad.

I agree with the OP - this is a big deal. I have all my docs on my Mobile Me disk space anticipating using the iPad to access them.

The only flaw in a wonderful iPad experience so far!

Does anyone know if PhoneView will work with the iPad? We're waiting for a while before buying our iPad, and PhoneView is very handy for the iPhone and iPod Touch, it would be handy for this situation as well.

Hadn't thought of that until I saw this post. Tried it out and sure enough...PhoneView works! Sees the iPad file system just like it does iPhone, and even the menu and taskbars refer to it as "iPad".

Really!

Please explain how not being able to use files across apps, load files onto the device as USB storage from a computer, or save files into a user-accessible area is BETTER than not?

I'm an iPad slappy, but I have to agree. All they need is something like a "big cardboard box" that you can throw files into - and if they are worried about the files corrupting something or whatever, I would be fine with it being limited to being able to store only files that are approved for use in iPad approved apps (e.g. they aren't going to allow .mkv files).

I was watching a video last night and had to go do something and really just wanted to save it to the device to finish later, but I couldn't.

Just wait for the iPad jailbreak release. It's been hacked already so the public release isn't far off.

Not being able to share files with a networked Apple desktop was the deal-breaker for me. Canceled my iPad order this morning.

Download, Save and Print (Not A Must, But Would Be Good)

I use Journal Articles a lot for University work, and BlackBoard which is a University Website hosting all Lecture/Seminar stuff and basically i would like to have like a folder of some sort for Downloads, and the ability to create and manage folders for my different Modules... i need (well technically want) to be able to save PDFs, Powerpoint Presentations and Word Documents off Safari (Internet) to a folder or something to view them and edit them later :)

I dont know about you guys, I can view a document in safari via my dropbox account and if I have an application that can handle that file type, I can open the file that I am viewing on the web in app that tells the OS that it can read the file type. The main issue for me is that after editing a document in pages I want to be able to then open that document in another application that identifies itself as being able to handle these files types. Its the first revision of the OS and its pretty good so far, lets see where Apple takes us.

I can live without a file system, what really annoys me is that if I have a PDF in ibooks and want to open it in other PDF app like iAnnotate I can't, I have to upload it again for the other app. I have a wifi iPad, so the idea of always being connected is not possible, even with the 3G version, there is no coverage everywhere.

So if there is no file system, fine, but allow all apps to see the files located in the iPad, earlier PalmOS didn't have file manager, but the apps that use certain type of apps could use them no matter when, how or by which app was uploaded.
