Hey everybody,

I have been having issues with my iPad Pros battery lately. The battery just drains very quickly, even when the iPad is not being used at all. Sometimes it would be losing 20-30% of battery overnight. Yesterday I did a clean restore of iOS on the device and set it up as new, no backups. I installed all the apps I needed and let it sit over night, starting from maybe 94%. This morning the iPad is down to 79%, and in the battery section in settings I can see a constant drop of charge overnight.

coconutBattery is telling me that the battery still is around 90% healthy, which seems to be okay after 1.5 years of use.

The iPad is on iOS 12.1.4.

Anybody experiencing similar issues?

Thank you,
Sebastian

I am having the same issue with my launch day 10.5 iPad Pro! I started noticing it about a month ago. My battery will lose between 10-15% overnight. Consulted with Apple Support online and they did a remote test and told me the battery is "normal". coconutBattery is reporting my battery health is around 88% at 275 cycles (which i find to be pretty crappy for a 1.5 year old iPad - my other Apple devices don't show this level of wear. Even my iPad mini 2 is still at around 90%). The battery section of settings does not show any unusual app usage during the overnight period that would account for the drain. Things I have one so far:
  • Did a restore from an iCloud backup. Did not help. Battery still drained in standby.
  • Did a DFU restore and set up as a new iPad. Without installing any third party apps the battery stayed at 100% for over 12 hours (without use).
  • Started installing apps and configuring email accounts (except for MS Exchange mail). Lost around 3% overnight which I thought wasn't too bad.
  • Configured my work mail via Exchange (Office 365 account). Went back to losing 10-15%. One night my battery went from 68% to 38%!
  • Last night I deleted the exchange account from my iPad and it drain around 3% overnight.
So based on the above, I am leaning toward the culprit being the Exchange account, which is a push account and therefore i assume is checking constantly for new emails, calendar events, notes etc.

Do you have an exchange account configured on you iPad Pro?

This is the first Apple device I have ever had a battery issue with. I also feel like it is draining quicker during normal use than it used to also. I have Apple Care and it doesn't expire until June 2019 so I will be monitoring battery condition via coconutBattery and if it falls below 80% I will be taking it in for replacement.

Thanks for starting this thread! I was thinking about starting one here too to see if anyone could give some advice.

Maybe someone out there can help us poor souls!

I am glad this issue has been brought up again. My iPad Pro 10.5 also seems to have poor battery. It seems to drain faster than any iPad I have ever had (I’ve had 1, 2, 3, Air, Air 2, mini 2, 12.9 Gen 1 and now 10.5). Sometimes it will lose 3% just by browsing for 15 minutes in Safari. It usually looses 10-12%, while I am away for work during the day (10 hours).

Coconut battery says 81 cycles and 91% capacity. I was on the phone with Apple for 45 minutes this past Saturday. The first person I talked to asked me to check battery health in settings. Hmm. I had to tell her that that is only available on iPhone.. anyway, I got to talk to a more knowledgeable person who was very helpful and really did her best to help me. She ran a remote battery diagnostic. The result was that my battery capacity was still at 100%. I simply refuse to believe that is possible.

I have had the device since late June 2017. The battery has bothered me since the beginning. In the Fall of 2017, I took it to an official apple repair shop. They ran a battery diagnostic, and the result was that the capacity was 115%. The guy at the store said that he had never seen that before.

It seems that something is off.

I can't help you, I just wanted to confirm what everybody here is saying: the newer iPads seem to not be able to reach the design spec regarding the capacity/cycles ratio. My iPad Pro 9.7 has around 91% capacity in 312 cycles. I don't know why. It is on iOS 9, and battery life is almost like-new. (Has dropped from around 14 hours of usage to around 13), but other than that, it is great. Also, standby time is impeccable. The poor capacity hasn't impacted battery life significantly, but I think that is because I am running iOS 9. I can't say this isn't kind of worrying, though.

I’ve also started experiencing standby battery drain after the iOS 12.1.4 update. No other changes on my part (no new apps, no new mail account etc.). The battery just suddenly started draining 10-15% during the night, and there is no activity showing in the battery usage history either. Coconut battery shows 95% capacity. I’m now turning on airplane mode when putting the iPad away for the night, and that of course keeps the drain to a minimum (1-2%). Still shouldn’t be necessary to use airplane mode for fixing drain issues.

So i noticed something interesting. I was at my Mon's house for the weekend and noticed that my 10.5 iPad Pro hardly drained in standby. My mom lives in a suburban area. I only pick up 2-3 other WiFi signals from neighbors. I live in a large apartment building in NYC. The list of WiFi signals I pick up at home is very long. Everyone and their cat (no dog building) has a WiFi router running. I was wondering if the battery drain might be due to WiFi interference, so I used a program called Air Radar to look at the WiFi signals in my area and see what channels they were on and what the signal interference was like. I use an Airport Extreme as my router (turned off the router of my cable company's modem, which is what most everyone around me has) and it was set to select the channel automatically. After looking at Air Radar I determined that a lot of people around me were on the same channels for the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks. I changed the channels both of the frequencies to something not being used by anyone else. Instead of my battery dropping 10-15% overnight in standby it has now been dropping 3-5% per night. Could this have been part of the problem? I still feel like my iPad 10.5 Pro battery life isn't the greatest (it still feels like it goes down too quickly during use), but I feel like it's better than it was before. Any thoughts?

Does your iPads lag slightly when going in settings menu as the WiFi ssid name is updated there? Just something I noticed, but haven’t seen any abnormal battery drain in my 10.5. Has very good standby time.

I have noticed a black screen for a second before settings even opens. I do not see this on any of my other iOS devices.

FYI the battery issues are back. It seems that WiFi interference issues are not the cause. Back to the drawing board!

So I decided to wipe my iPad and see how the battery life is again afterwards. I setup as new iPad and charged to 100%. Took it off power at 1:00 pm. Will see how it drains with no use over the next few days and keep track of it. Will also take screenshots over time during the discharge. Will report back my findings, but I am starting to think its a bad battery (even if Apple says it within specs). If it continues to drain excessively I will make a genius appointment and show them my data and see what they think.

I’ll be interested in following this. I am considering doing that as well, but as I am using it for work, it is a bit annoying to wipe it and set as new.

Hey guys, I also have an iPad Pro 10.5 from lauch day and my battery life has been very awful since september last year. Coconut battery reports 83% of battery health and 360 cycles (Yeah, I’m kinda of a power user) My AppleCare+ expires on July so I’ll wait to ask for a replacemnt too, I don’t think it won’t be long.

Hey guys. I decided to wipe my iPad Pro 10.5 and set it up as new yesterday. Just to see if some app or setting was causing the battery issue.

Unfortunately it did not make a difference. The iPad lost 10% in 10 hours while I was at work, just by laying on my desk at home. Not good enough. I am still well below 100 charging cycles.

By far the worst battery I’ve had in an iPad.

Edit: Our launch day Air 2 has only lost 5%, laying on the same desk for 2 days.

Wiping it did no good. I also did a DFU restore when iOS 12.2 came out and it did no good either. Continued to lose 15-20% battery in standby in 24 hrs. After the final wipe, I recharged it and then took it off power. I took screen shots every 12 hours from 100% down to 5% (Wednesday morning until Saturday morning or 72 hours). Then I made a Genius appointment and nicely explained my problem, what I did to try to resolve it (DFU restore) and showed him the screen shots and showed that there was very little activity reported during this period when high battery loss in standby occurred. He did a diagnostic and his results were 94% battery capacity at 192 cycles which is considered normal. Coconut Battery reports the same number of cycles, but that the battery is at 85% health (not sure why that is). Anyway he said he’d be right back and went to speak to someone. He came back and said they were willing to replace it based on the screen shots I showed him. I got a white box replacement. I set it up and will see how this battery goes. If I have the same problem again I have to think it is something to do with my setup or network. Will report back in a few days with results. I was happy that they gave me the replacement pretty easily (although I wonder if that is because they know there is a potential issue). I always get Applecare + but have never really used it. For once it paid off.

Please report back on how the replacement performs :) I've gotten used to enabling airplane mode when putting the iPad away for the day. Didn't have to do that before. Currently only have 42 cycles on mine as it's already a replacement for the white spot issue reported in another thread. Coconut shows 95.2% health.

My new 10.5 Pro arrived yesterday afternoon (whoop!). I set it up and then fully charged it. When I went to bed it was on almost 100%. This morning it’s down to 58%, which seems a little surprising. Does this sound right?

I’ve seen people here talking about Coconut Battery and so I had intended to download it and check the battery on delivery (it’s a refurb, albeit build date was Feb 2019). I see that Coconut Battery can’t be got from the App Store, though, and Googling suggests that it’s not possible to use the free version without a Mac desktop to connect the iPad to (although I may have misunderstood). Would it be worth my buying the premium version to monitor the battery? I’ve seen it mentioned so many times in my few days here that I’ve formed the impression that most of you use it.

1) Never happened to me before and I own 3 iPads.

2) I downloaded coconutBattery to Windows. I don't have the full version and only use it to check iPad batteries. Seems to work fine.

Thanks! I’ll see if I can get Coconut Battery onto my desktop and take it from there.

Edited: I'm probably missing something but I can't find a Windows version. I downloaded the zip file and attempted to install it in Windows but although winzip ran there doesn't seem to be an executable for me to run...?

Further edit: could it be because it's in a keyboard case? Possibly the case is draining the battery? It's down to 45% now :(

Heh. I screwed up. I find that actually I'm using iMazing. Download it to Windows (see link directly below). Using your lightning connector to USB cable attach your iPad to your computer. Click on the little green battery icon in iMazing (bottom right) and you'll find a whole bunch of information about your battery including near the top your battery health expressed in percentage terms.

Thanks :)

iMazing says battery health is good - 100%. It also shows just one charge cycle, which is also presumably good. Could be the drain was due to the keyboard case. Will do a little Googling...

Thanks for that website link! Working through it I looked at the Battery Usage utility, and it suggests that in the last 14+ hours the screen has not been off at any stage. I’m not sure how accurately these things are reported, but if the utility is generally reliable then might that suggest that the screen isn’t turning off when I close the case?

The case isn’t an Apple one, btw. It’s this one.

First test was not encouraging. Battery went from 100% to 93% in 12 hours. By comparison a 2018 IPP 12.9 dropped from 100% to 97%. Both are setup exactly the same. Since this first test was within 24 hours of getting the iPad, updating to iOS 12.2 and installing from a backup, I will wait a couple of days and test again. But so far I have not seen an appreciable difference between the new 10.5 and the replacement.

I have a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 and my battery is at 91% capacity based on Coconut battery.

In 4 days with no use since a full charge it’s now dead. This thing used to last for weeks on one charge with no use.

Something has to be using the battery in the background.

I don’t have a keyboard case or an Apple Pencil so it has to be an app or some background process.

Hi there,

I’ve only had my Pro 10.5 for a few days, but it sounds as though you’ve had yours longer. Is this battery drain a new thing on yours? If so, do you feel it may tie in with an iOS update?
