I am glad to see that I am not the only one searching for an Apple Smart Case style case for this device. Since no reputable vendor seems to produce such a thing, do the folks who have purchased a knock off on eBay or elsewhere have any preferred vendors to share?

You might want to rethink that.

For those with the Khomo case, it does NOT protect the iPad when accidentally dropped.

My iPad slipped out of my hands the other day and landed on a concrete pavement on the corner where the power button is. It was actually not snug at that corner to start with and it managed come off the iPad before it hit the ground. Now I have a massive dent in this corner!

Very good fit, and it seems to stay on quite nicely at the corners. Works fine with my Apple Smart Keyboard folio as well. The only issue is that the bumpers really extend the size at the corners, so it can cause too tight a fit if you want to put this combination in a sleeve or something like that.

I got an eBay knock-off black "leather" Smart Case for my Air 3 that's surprisingly good (not as good as the Apple one I had on my old Air 2, but close enough for less than a tenth of the price).

I've also picked up the Khomo rear cover for use with my Smart Keyboard. Initial impressions are good in terms of quality, feel and match. Again, especially for the price.

In Canada, The Source has the real Apple leather 10.5" sleeve for CAD$29.95 in-store. Mostly sold out, but still available in a few stores around the country.

The folio cover is also on sale there for cheap.

I'm also on the lookout for a case to protect the back of my new Air. Possibly something that should be used in conjunction with the Smart Cover, and thin enough as I'm mostly looking to protect the back against scratches.

This one has thick corner bumpers which some might find bulky, but it does protect better, and the thin TPU ones I found had smaller port cutouts which made it hard to plug in the cables. Plus, this one is textured inside so it doesn't give that bubble look.

It looks sturdy and with a good quality. The corner bumpers put me off, though. I'll consider it if I can't find a thinner one.
My iPad Air usually lives between my work bag, my travel backpack or a desk somewhere. I just want to make sure it's protected against scratches when traveling in my daily bag (the travel backpack does have a laptop plus separate iPad compartment).

Following up my own message, I ended up going with this:

For $8, it feels as cheap as you would expect. The red color is subdued and not nearly as striking as the images in the listing. However, the inside is soft so I don't worry about scratches, it covers all four edges of the iPad when in use, the buttons work fine, and the magnets are strong for sleep/wake and holding it as a stand.

Honestly, for the price, my main complaint is that the color is more watermelon than fire truck.

Probably said this in here, but Zugu case. Completely awesome and screen protector friendly since it doesn’t interfere with my Zagg. Selling my 10.5, but typing this on my 11 with the Zugu case in the perfect angled and solid position in my lap that it does so well.
