1) As far as I am aware, yes to the first part. I certainly got it with a 10.5 Pro refurb in the UK. No idea as regards the second part.

2) A refurb, I suppose.

Wow, colour me impressed. Headphones of that quality would be wasted on an iPad. They'd surely have to be amped anyway. Best I've ever used with an iPad are Sennheiser 599s, and even that's really a waste. With such beautiful headphones I'd be looking at something like these, at least for music:

https://www.audiophileon.com/news/hd-music-player-top-10

Yea i have a collection of portable DAC Amps for cell phones etc (mostly FiiOs) and i run a bunch of ***** (yes thats the brand name) audio (amps and quad band EQs) and Topping gear (DACs) on my desk top for DAC, AMP, and even EQ. My favorite phones are the Foxtex TRX-00 Ebony but my daily drivers are Sennheiser Jubilee and (58xs) and 600s. My Focal Elex mostly sound good with classical, the Fostex Ebony's (which i think are now discontinued as that wood is endangered and they are banned from using it for continued production if i an not mistaken) for EDM and the Sennheisers are better for long listening sessions. For travel i run the Sony WH-100s or my Shure 535s or my Vmoda's My son ran off with all my planar magnetics (Hi-Fi mans and such) and I am going to kill him if i don't get them back. I also have a pair of parrot Zik 2.0s that are fun to play with the custom EQ settings on phones with but are kind of annoying also. (I went a little crazy when i discovered massdrop). If i could only have one pair, it would definately be the Fostex Ebony TRX-00s.

Portable sound is no problem with my LG V35 as it has a Quad DAC that is about as good as desk top processing. The lack of such tech along with the lack of a head phone Jack is why i never will jump back into iphones most likely..and sadly. Although wired is not the ideal for portability, it is still leaps and bounds better than the best blue tooth out there and probably will be for the foreseeable future when you are talking about these types of cans and lossless audio from Tidal.

Be that as it may, the Sonys are darn good for air travel and i COULD use them with an iphone.

Nonetheless, it makes sense for me to buy the Pro 10.9 considering it's current price point and available headphone jack given my collection. It is no secret that even if you are a die hard windows fan or android fan...when it comes to tablets the Ipad is and has always been pretty much uncontested. I needed an upgrade for my Mini 2 as i use it on every single trip for movie watching, web consumption and general use while on the road and i like a smaller dynamic on the move device for travel..... and often from the hotel room ill use it in liew of my HP pro when i am just lounging around on the couch in the room after work.

I seriously would consider a 3 tiered combo of a macbook, ipad pro and ipad mini to set up a little eco-system if it werent for the cost and the fact that my it would create too many headaches with the vpn, file sharing etc. I could do it on my own moving everything in and out of google drive but i am just not sure it is worth it.

If however, i could figure out a way to actually leave the pro book at home and go present with only an ipad..i would do it in a heart beat as i am a "one bag" travel kinda of guy (if possible).

This was an impulse buy anyway. It went like this : Complaining about slow ipad min 2 when web surfing -> Noticing the mini 5 was coming out -> noticing the 10.9 pro was basically on clearance -> comparing the specs of the two -> opting for the 10.9 Pro over the mini 5 as my upgrade this time around just for the fact that i am getting an extra gig of ram, an extra 192g of storage and a much better 120hz screen for $179 bucks with the possibility of actually being able to have a type case that and pen that i can peck on and draw stuff on when harrassing people on social media while stuck in airports. ....

Not an Apple guy for many reasons, mostly because there are just too many hoops you have to go through to make Apple stuff work in the a Windows controlled corporate world, but maybe yall can convert me. Just setting up google drive just now and trying to figure out how to organize power points on my ipad mini a few minutes ago in preparation for my Ipad pro arriving on friday made me think "man this isn't worth it....a Jump drive and 3 minutes of my time and my HP Pro would have been ready for the trip and i'd have been done looooonnnnnnngggggggg ago". It was easy on my PC end of things, but once i picked up my cloud drive and started viewing the files on the ipad it was a bloody mess. That's the problem with Apple, that has always been the problem with Apple. That has been the problem with Apple for as long as i can remember (well if i remember back far enough there was also a problem once upon a time that all the software you WANTED to run was windows only (thinking 90s). It is the nicests most beautiful stuff that just never seems to be functional for the stuff i actually do when i want to do it and in the ways i want to do it. Of course if my company were in the Apple ecosystem i would ditch my LG and buy an Iphone and buy all Apple gear and i could make it work then, but i have never worked for a company that used any Apple products, must less embraced an entire Apple eco system (I work in health care).

It is possible this pro will just be my "toy", but I will set it up to function as a back up to my laptop just in case the laptop goes down or gets stolen on a trip. I also carry a jump drive with all my files so the last resort is to borrow a lap top from a student or just run to best buy and buy a cheap lap top in an emergency if it came to that my job would reimburse it.

I have the same question. The 64 GB new Air is CAD$649 but the refurb old 10.5” Pro is slightly cheaper at CAD$619.

The Pro has a better camera and ProMotion. The new Air’s A12 CPU is 20% faster than the 10X multi-core but the 10X’s GPU is about 35% faster.

Both have a headphone jack. The old Pro has Both have a Smart Connector.

The old Pro has 4 speakers. The new Air has 2 I think.

The old Pro has 4 GB RAM. The new Air, I dunno.

New Air has 3 GB RAM.

Yes. I posted that old post 10 days ago.

One other difference: iPad Air has Bluetooth 5.0. iPad Pro only has Bluetooth 4.2. The new AirPods support Bluetooth 5.0 as well. Whether that is actual meaningful difference though remains to be seen.

BTW, to reiterate the difference with the number of speakers, see pic from Zollotech video below. Pro on top, Air on the bottom. It also shows the camera difference as the Pro is sitting flush on top of the Air, meaning the Air’s camera doesn’t protrude, while the Pro’s superior camera does protrude. The protrusion of the camera doesn’t bother me, since the TPU back case I use is thicker than the camera protrusion anyway, so with the back case on, it sits flat. Mind you, it is moot, since these days if the iPad Pro is on a table, it’s connected to my Smart Keyboard. I only have the keyboard off if I’m using it on the couch or something.

I realise that it's not a particularly popular thing to do, but I have actually used the camera on the iPad Pro 9.7 on a goodly number of occasions. This has been exclusively to do with producing pics of household items (furniture, jewellery, ornaments, silver etc.) for insurance and archival purposes. I find the "viewfinder" excellent and the pics not too shabby at all. Can't say I'd want to use if for candid shots or even outside of my abode and grounds. Oh, and the flash has proved very useful (absent on the new Air and mini) quite a few times.

Yep. My kids love using a tablet to take pictures. I usually don’t, but it’s good for taking pictures of objects and what not, while keeping my iPhone free for other purposes. The camera on this one is decent, the same as my 7 Plus.

The camera is not a critical feature for me on an iPad, but nonetheless it’s a nice bonus. What I also use separate to that though is the flash, as a flashlight in the dark.

Very happy about there not being a camera bump. The last thing I care about on a tablet is its ability to take a picture.

Even given what I know now, it would not in any way have persuaded to buy the tablet in the first place. But, as I say, it has proved useful but obviously not essential.

Once again, it comes down to this in my mind: I believe the 10.5 to be the better device, but it does come with the risk of the bright spot issue. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

I do find it odd to say the least while some people have never encountered this problem with the 10.5 others have suffered on a number of devices. I wonder if that has to do with how it is being used? Could it be that heavy users operating the device at maximum or close to maximum brightness will be more likely to be plagued by the issue? That may explain why seemingly so many display devices have been affected? All conjecture, of course.

I would be surprised, however, if the Air has not been fixed in this respect. You never know, perhaps that rather than economics explains the loss of four speakers or ProMotion. I doubt it, though.

When you are at the airport people watching, and you see something ridiculous (and you will) but don't want to be all conspicuous by holding your phone up to take a picture (most people look DOWN at cell phones) and you are already holding your ipad.

.....snap and shared. ;)

Of if you want to take a quick video to edit and don't want to mess with importing/exporting and you are already holding your ipad..... (On the plane i usually have my ipad out, not my phone so if someone gets dragged down the aisle by security by their neck the ipad might be very quick rather than fishing my phone out of the seat pocket and disconnecting it from the charger i always hook up for flights.

Well I was going to buy the air on realise tomorrow.

But after weighing up the options I just got a refurb pro for £449.

Its delivered tomorrow and I have a funny feeling it will just be old stock instead of a refurb.

Well we will find out tomorrow.

Interesting. I have an old iPad 10 Watt USB charger at my office that worked fine with my 6-foot Lightning cable + 6-foot USB extension cord to charge my iPad Air 2. It also charged my iPhone 7 Plus fine too. However, with my iPad Pro 10.5" it often gives me the "not charging" message. I tried a different 3-foot USB extension cord and it's the same problem. If I remove the USB extension cord completely, it charges just fine. I guess my iPad Pro 10.5 is a bit more sensitive than my iPad Air 2 to the voltage drop introduced by the extension cord. FWIW, the iPad Air 2 came with a 27.3 Watt-hour battery, whereas the iPad Pro 10.5 comes with a 30.4 Watt-hour battery, an increase of 11%.

BTW, the iPad Air 10.5" comes with a 30.2 Watt-hour battery. Despite the slightly smaller battery, I wonder if the Air will actually have slightly longer battery life than the iPad Pro 10.5, since the Air's SoC might be somewhat more efficient.

In the meantime, I should probably bring a 12 Watt iPad charger in, and find a 10-foot Lightning cable somewhere. Or else just get an AC extension cord for $3. :)

I just bought the 10.5 pro for $650 this Sunday and thought I had a great deal :) (256GB).
Thanks, actually I bought my iPad Pro 10.5" 64 gb on the Black Friday sale. $525 and everywhere else I checked, I think the lowest price I saw was $625. I was starting to think I maybe got a used one, but after seeing the packaging, I sure it was a new one. AND $275 less than the new iPad Pro 11".

Awesome. I was very happy with my 2018 iPad. This 10.5 pro is even better. Definitely my most used Apple device. Will be for years to come.

So basically a continuation of the problem I had w USB c on windows enjoys multi platform status....

Good thing I also needed an upgrade for my mini 2

Actually, I've been using my apple lightning to vga on my ipad 2018 with no issue since April 2018. It worked on every projector, new or old...

just got the ipad pro 10.5 but havent had a chance to use the vga adaptor yet...

Admittedly my preference for the Pro is based largely on the quad speakers, 120Hz refresh rate and higher Metal score. If these things don't matter to you, then the Air 3 is a better purchase as the A12 is likely to be more future proof. I do not believe 3GB v 4GB will affect "future-proofness" much.

The 120Hz rate is a big draw for many people though, along with the quad speakers.

4 GB is noticeably better than 2 GB in terms of reducing app and Safari tab reloads. However, I can't say it will be noticeably better than 3 GB, since I don't have a 3 GB iPad to test.

I do have a 3 GB iPhone, but that's not a fair comparison since the screen is way smaller and page rendering is very different on the iPhone, so I won't bother trying to compare my iPhone to my iPad Pro in this regard.

Still, it was an added plus for me in the decision to choose the Pro. I was thinking along the lines of an 8 GB MacBook vs a 6 GB MacBook. I think it says something that the minimum you get in a 2018 iPhone and a 2019 iPad now is 3 GB. Just a few years ago, that minimum was 1 GB.

Well, you likely don't scroll through MacRumors on your TV. It's way smoother on the 120 Hz iPad Pro than any 60 Hz device, including my MacBook and iMac. Similarly swiping to different home screen pages is much smoother.

Truthfully it's not a critical feature, since most of the time the MacRumors page or home screen is stationary, not scrolling. Nonetheless, it's really nice luxury feature to have. Very pretty. The other theoretical advantage is it can decrease the frame rate, say for 24 fps video playback. Not only does that eliminate the need for 2:3 pulldown, it also potentially saves battery life, although I can't tell you how much battery life it might save.

It does also supposedly provide for lower latency for Pencil too, but like you, I will not likely buy a Pencil.

This doesn't worry me in the least.

I suspect the Air could get iOS updates for a year longer than the iPad Pro because of the A12 in the Air, but that's a tradeoff I was willing to take to get the added features of the Pro which I can use today. BTW, besides the quad speakers and better camera, one additional feature I really like on the Pro that I hadn't predicted is just having the flashlight handy in the dark. There is no flash on the Air.

Some GPU tests will be faster with A12, but the A10X will be better in a few others. A10X is hugely faster in Geekbench Metal, but I suspect it's not really representative of most true Metal workloads. And the CPU advantage of A12 is only minor. Overall, I wouldn't worry about it. If you really wanted a noticeable performance boost, I'd recommend the 11" Pro. That one would also be able to make real use of the Neural Engine, since it has Face ID. It almost seems to me that the Neural Engine is orphaned in large part on the 2019 iPad Air, since it doesn't have Face ID.

I was replacing my air 2, so my comments are a direct comparison. I did end up getting the iPad Pro 2017. So far I am somewhat disappointed. The 120hz is okay, but wouldn’t pay extra for it. The performance does not seem much better than my air in anything other than benchmarks. The color is horrible compared to my iPad Air 2. Even with True Tone disabled the whites are somewhat yellow where the Air 2 is spot on. I like the larger screen size and speakers. But I use headphones, so the speakers are of minimal use. I may be taking this back to the store and wait a year or 2.

Any way to adjust the screen to help out the whites?

I thank you for your help.

Edit: I found where to adjust the colors. I have been able to make the colors a little more accurate, but still a little off. I will continue to work on getting the colors right.

Exactly - the 2018 iPad is a great device on its own especially for the price.

But thanks to this thread, I just got a discounted 10.5" iPad Pro after owning a 2018 iPad. I'm blown away by the screen and the speakers. I'm going to use my Pro for sketching, drawing and image editing, so the upgrade was significant in quality, but reasonable in price. Of course I'd want the latest iPad Pro, but I can't justify the price and spending wouldn't end there, because the accessories for the new Pro models are even pricier than for older Pros.

Rene Ritchie, the guy from iMore, has just published his iPad Air 3 video review:

The funny part is while he mainly talks about how great the new iPad Air is with its many retained old Pro features and the new A12 SoC update, when someone in the comments directly asks him which to buy, the 2019 10.5" Air or the 2017 10.5" Pro, he recommends the 2017 10.5" Pro. :p

I guess that makes sense though. For true non-discontinued iPad products, I too agree the Air is the best choice for many people. The 10.5" Pro is a good value, but that option will not be available for much longer, at least from stores other than the Apple refurb store.

Those two USB extension cables were USB 2. I just tried a USB 3 extension cable (even though the Lightning cable is only USB 2), and it charges just fine now.

I guess the USB 3 extension cable is more robust.

Well I received a refurb pro today.

And although I preferred the airs space grey colour, flush camera and maybe 2 years extra iOS updates.

The pro motion, extra speakers and the crazy fast Touch ID makes the refurb more worth it.

IMOP.

They both have the same touch id.

I'm glad I bought my 10.5" Pro last week from the Apple Canada refurb storek. They are completely sold out of all 64 GB (and 256 GB) models now. Only the 512 GB models remain.

So, the "value" proposition is no longer as viable here in Canada for the iPad Pro, since that CAD$619 entry level price is no longer available, at least for now. Staples.ca still has the new ones available at CAD$699.99 though, and some people have been able to apply 10% off coupons to bring that down to $630. Very YMMV however.
