I have the 11 inch pro and find it perfect for sofa use. I personally would find the 12.9 inch too big for casual use. However I also have a 13 inch MacBook Air. Based on your use case I would say go with the 12.9. If it’s your only device then I think you would be better with the 12.9 inch. Why not try out the 12.9 inch first and if you find it’s too big exchange it for the 11 inch.

The best thing I read on this is that someone said that with 12.9 they love it on the desk and hate it on the couch, and with 11 they like it on the desk and love it on the couch. This feels right for me too.

But obviously there are plenty of great use cases for the 12.9!

I bought my 12.9" specifically as a laptop replacement. Most applications I use for work are web enabled, so no real stretch for me to do real work. I do appreciate having the magic keyboard so I can be at a desk but then just take the iPad itself to a meeting and take notes with it, instead of tapping at a keyboard while someone is talking.

On the home front it is a bit largish for casual use, sure. I really noticed it when I first bought it, but maybe I just got used to it.

Well, I'm back from a couple of Malls, a couple because in one there was only the 11 and in the other the 12.9. I played with them for a while, I tried different apps including safari, luma fusion, iMovie , iPhoto, a photo editor, YouTube, Word and Apple TV. I did the test with the IPPs disconnected from the keyboard mostly and the considerations are the following:

12.9
It is actually "heavy" to hold.
Unfortunately I was standing and I could not detach it very much from the table (it was tied with a very short anti-theft wire), but I felt the weight, and it was without any cover.
Using it without some kind of support, even improvised, becomes frustrating after a few minutes and does not make it pleasant to use; however this would not be my use.
The screen .... wow, really wow!
Next to it there was an Air and I ran the same apps simultaneously; what to say, the difference is clear compared to a 10.5 / 11 screen, especially in video content, much more immersive.

11
As with the 12.9, even with this one I was on my feet and couldn't move it much. Without resting it somewhere it takes longer to get tired, but you get tired anyway.
Positive note: holding it in portrait I was able to write with the virtual keyboard holding it with both hands (I have quite big hands), which is impossible on the 12.9.
I was pleasantly surprised by the video editing apps (which I will use), because even if the screen is smaller, it is still pleasant to use; the preview window of the video is smaller, but sufficient (I did not think), at least it can be used in portrait to have it bigger, without sacrificing usability.

Conclusion: I chose the 12.9.
The weight difference is there and you can feel it, but once you place it somewhere, the problem does not arise.
The larger screen, slightly on paper, earns many points over its smaller brother, especially in video content.
The sense of immersion is certainly greater and made me feel a wow effect.
The thing that definitively convinced me, and that I had not evaluated, was the fact that the larger screen is pleasant and usable even at a certain distance. Let me explain, my use of the device will often make me keep it at close range (sofa / bed), but imagine myself doing eg. editing or in any case activities that require hours and a certain attention to detail, with the iPad 11 on the desk, therefore at a relatively greater distance, it tires the view much more and makes the experience less enjoyable IMHO.
This is what I felt while I was standing with the iPad on the table, attached to the magic keyboard. Note. I am 40, with no particular vision problems.
If it weren't my main device I would have chosen the 11 for sure, but ultimately I prefer to give up portability a little in favor of the larger screen size.
That said, I will now proceed with the order, thank you all for your feedback.

Thanks for you feedback.
I will never use it for work, just for pleasure. At the moment I'm for 11, the only thing holding me back is video and photo editing, although I don't actually do that much
12.9 never felt normal holding it like a tablet. It felt normal when I used the Apple keyboard case. I owned the 12.9 for about a year and 1/2 approximately so I had ample time to adjust. It’s like holding a big cardboard while reading or browsing the web. It doesnt feel natural.

But anyway I’d buy both and plan to get a 12.9 eventually.

Which makes me want a folding 12.9 ??? that would be awesome but will likely cost $3000.

Definitely know what you mean about the screen... that was what I first noticed about the 12.9... it’s gorgeous.
as for the weight... it’s not something I’ve noticed after the initial ‘wow it’s big’ moment.

... I use mine with an after market smart folio (exactly the same as the official Apple ones but far cheaper)... I kind of use it in its stand position but just resting on me, the bed, the sofa etc... so you’re not actually holding it, just more supporting it.

enjoy, reading all your use cases I think the 12.9 ticked the all over the 11

Is it strange to think of switching from 2020 pro 11” to air 4 instead? Since benchmark shows A14 chip is newer and better?

I "weighed" them both in a shop, the impression when I'm standing there and holding it in my hand is that 12.9 is manageable, then at home when I simulate the size on the sofa, doubts arrive.
Would I get used to it or maybe it is better to say I would adapt to?
I believe that these 2 scenarios are very different in terms of satisfaction in the user experience.

Best is to buy the 12.9, trust home for a week or so. if happy keep!
My choice would be 12.9.

We are all different but will said benchmark differences really change your experience on a day to day basis more than the loss of things like the better speakers, better display and faceID?

When I first bought my iPad Pro in 2018, I went back and forth on this! (There’s another poll and a super-long thread dating back to 2018.)

In the end, I went with the 11 inch, which I’m typing on right now. For one, I have a 13 inch MBP, and it felt like an iPad Pro of the same side would be redundant. For another, I was carrying my iPP with me all the time as well as using it on couch and in bed, and I found the 12.9 to be a little unwieldy. However, that was before the pandemic and before the Magic Keyboard, which are both game changers.

That said, I’m still happy with my 11 inch, though personally, I wish Apple would offer a 12 inch. I think that would be the perfect size.

I think you’re losing a ton by trying to use the 12.9 without a keyboard cover.

I understand you are thinking of newer chip equals better performance, but there are other differences at play... those iPad Pros come with 6GB of RAM, which plays apart in performance as well. I think the only legitimate reason why anyone would switch if they prefer the use of TouchID, if not... the better product is the iPad Pro in terms of specs.

in my opinion it's like spending money on a downgrade

Who‘s to say they would actually spend money to switch.

I’ve had both and much prefer the 12.9. As others have said, it really isn’t heavy. The difference is negligible. I even have a smart folio keyboard on it and I use it constantly in bed and on the sofa. It’s terrific and you won’t regret going with the bigger screen. I can’t think of any downsides to it unless you need extreme portability, but you said yourself you’ll never take it out of the house.

Can you give me some examples? Please note that I don't use this iPad for studying, writing or working. Multimedia and editing only

I find the 12.9" ridiculous in portrait mode. YMMV.

Anyway, if the tablet is going to be in landscape all the time, why not have the keyboard? It's vastly superior for typing in url's, forum posting, emailing, and hot keys everywhere ... plus you can see the whole screen while you do stuff and it's the stand for the iPad, so it's always easy to set up the tablet on a desk.

Not using it for working or writing and not using it on the desk, but using it as a tablet for multimedia and editing on the sofa or bed, at the moment I don't feel the need for a keyboard.

I think you would do better with the 11” model with the Apple Pencil. It’s just less cumbersome to hold and use when you are not at your desk.

Anyways, there’s nothing stopping you from getting the Smart Keyboard cover later should you so desire. That said, I find I quite like the feel of having the Smart Keyboard cover serve as an added layer of support for the ipad when I am holding it in portrait mode.

I went through this decision last week. The specs are the same except weight & screen size. The added weight negative out "weighed" the added screen size so I went with the 11. Adding a keyboard to an 12.9 makes it bigger & heavier than a MacBook. I didn't want that in a tablet. Very happy with the "upgrade" from my 2016 10.5 Pro.

Same here, I got the 11, upgraded from a 10.5 and I love it. I already have a Macbook so a 12.9 didnt make sense to me to have.

You are never going to sit the tablet down on a desk or in your lap and you are never going to web surf or write an e-mail? Feels very dogmatic and missing the point of the iPad, but of course if you don't plan on using a keyboard, you don't. What can I say?

Anyway, the iPad Pro 12.9 is an awkward tablet for many people, which pushes it towards landscape/keyboard usage on a lap/desk. Again, YMMV.

Remember the present 12.9” Pro is no heavier than the original iPad introduced by Jobs.

I got a 12.9” when they first came out in 2015 and love the bigger display. I use as my main business device, for video watching and playing music. For me the 11” is just better if you are carrying around holding up with one hand for prolonged period. I also have the previous 10.5” of similar size I use that way, but if I could only have one iPad, it would without hesitation be the 12.9”
