I felt like the pricing was really set up to make the ASP closer to $749. Four times the storage for $100? That's an easier call for a lot of people already spending that much money for the Pro version over the cheap base model. Spending another $200 to get double the storage? That's a lot harder to swallow and I feel like Apple was probably supply constrained on 512GB chips and felt like they needed to make bank on it to justify it's existence. And some people are willing to pony up that much, so good for them. I felt like I came out ahead because I was planning on spending at least $799 to get the 256GB model and now I spent $749. Well, I also got the cellular model, so whatever that costs.

I guess I don't understand why you can't work from the cloud. I agree that there are those who might not want to use cloud space, or have issues with it for one reason or another. But from an industry perspective, those folks are in the minority. Most people will have no issues with the cloud, and will be able to access it reliably. The operative phrase is "most", and that is the design point of the future.

I don't know that offering 256 or 512 GB options runs counter to this, really. I believe these are more of a marketing point than a true user requirement. And that is the reason why I asked the question of what people need that kind of local storage for. I appreciate your feedback on that.
Because i'm not always where there is secure wifi, I won't work on unsecured, and I plan to try to not activate the cellular service on the device.

I'm fine with being in the minority - but I sorta feel that if that were true, they would have done 64-128-512 as the options. We as a household should not have to update our devices for awhile now. Whatever big files come in the next few years we are good. I also anticipate in that timeframe to be on the road part of the year and for what we will be doing cloud again won't work.

Great thing is - everyone has choices!

It took all the bargaining skills I had to get my wife to agree to let me upgrade to the new 10.5" iPad Pro, and she was not exactly thrilled about the price plus the cost of the new smart keyboard, so I went with the 64 GB, even knowing that the next level up was WAY more value.

I never used up all 32 GB on my iPad Pro 9.7", so I think I'll be ok with 64 GB.

You bought a cellular model and will try to not activate the cellular service? Isn't that kind of like buying a box of chocolate chip cookies, and then trying not to eat them? I'd think that if you're on the road a lot (been there, done that) you'd run into a need for that at some point.

I'm a little surprised that Apple jumped from 64 to 256. I think 128 would have been a sweet spot. I'd like to hear what the marketing rationale was for that.

I was prepared to pay $1229 for the 256GB LTE (1st gen 12.9 pricing as of March 2016, it was $150 price bump between capacities). Getting 512GB for the same price is a very nice and appreciated bonus for me.

Of course, I'm not buying the ASK or Apple Pencil. For my usage, the extra storage is more valuable than the accessories. Besides, if I change my mind regarding accessories, I can always buy the ASK and Pencil down the line. If I find myself wishing for more local storage, I'd need to buy a new iPad. :p

I might guess 256 memory isn't a big increase in their cost so they get an extra hundred on the upsell. 256 is more enticing than 128.

I"m probably going to go with the plan that was like 5gb for 5 months or something.

I have constant service on the Air right now, and don't use enough bandwidth to justify the cost. I have some other expenses and figured it would be a good trial to see if I actually need the service. There are other household reasons it was purchased how it was - so it won't go to waste.

I also have to fight my middle child for time on it - she wants to draw on it!! LOL

Sound logic. That said, I had a 128GB 9.7" Pro and never came close to using half of the storage. 32GB was too little but 64GB is just right for me.

Haha, I've been dropping hints to my wife that I want to upgrade my iPad (you know, testing the waters), and she doesn't seem to mind, but I'm pretty sure that she has no idea that even the base Pro with a Smart Keyboard and tax is $900. Justifying a new iPad was A LOT easier when they were $500.

What do people do to need 256 GB on a mobile device? To store music, most of which they never listen to or only seldom do? Or to store videos, most of which they never watch or seldom do? This is what the cloud is for. Take music and videos away, and what usage needs more than 64GB?

For me, and it will differ for others, I don't need that much storage. I use my iPad for consumption - ebooks, browsing, texting, and doing lightweight email. I don't game, or edit videos, or do spreadsheets or create documents on it. I use my rMBP for those kinds of things.

I have an iPad3 which is now obsolete thanks to Apple. It has 64GB with 44GB free. I got a 10.5 inch IPP to replace it, but not for more storage. I honestly don't understand why 256GB would ever be warranted, much less 512GB. I've had systems with large HDDs, and never used more than a minimal amount of them. I've used Sharepoint or Notes teamrooms or some other networked storage for almost all of my files and data. Local storage was hardly used. Even large application environments booted out of SAN and had very little local storage. The iPad is a personal device, not a corporate client. But the thought is the same, and even more pronounced for personal usage - what is the need for so much local storage? I mean, if you want it, go for it. But what do you need it for?

I tend to think people are pack rats, too. They never garbage collect their unused files, and just let things pile up. How many restore points do PC users have on their systems? I bet almost no one ever cleans out the old ones. And all those moldy install files take up space, too, on Macs as well as PCs.

The new iPad is a wonderful device. IOS still limits it a lot, though, and I don't see IOS11 fixing that, even with all its glitzy new features. But the direction for storage is very clear to me, and that is toward personal cloud space. The vast majority of users will never be out of wifi range, so cloud will always be available to them. Personal devices like iPads are meant to be presentation clients, with enough local storage for transitory needs, and permanent storage will be elsewhere. So how much local storage is really needed for that? I suspect that even the 64GB on my new iPad is overkill.

Yeah well I like storing things locally so they're there when I need em. Plus I got $$ to burn. 81gb left of 256 on 10.5. Btw everyone stops treading ur post after u start whining about ur iPad 3.

Very few actually need over 64gb and the vast majority get big hard drive storage cause it makes them feel powerfull and gives them bragging right with the ladies.

Wow you guys just know everything about everybody. These forums are best when people share their own thoughts, not why anyone who doesn't share ur situation is wrong. Grow up

i feel like NO one at all bought the 64GB variant... except me.

I bought the cellular version , and I have unlimited data on it so I'm not concerned about saving stuff locally and I think 64GB is plenty for me.

Anyone else opt for the 64GB?
I bought the 64gb Wifi 12.9, I honestly would've been fine with 32gb so 64gb was a nice upgrade they did. Plenty of space for me, I use 12-15gb MAX

I got the 256 but now regret it. Gonna return it for a 64 from bhphoto that will save me 140$ when you factor in tax savings. I’m barely using 28gb with everything I need installed.

Yep--I have a method. I have to be willing to accept no a few times, and then as long as I keep my cool and am not a jerk about it, she usually says yes. ;)

Lol, had a 64GB iPad 3. Around month 6, I kept getting messages whenever I tried to update apps that there wasn't enough space on my iPad. Jumped on the 128GB iPad 4 as soon as it was released (Feb 2013, iirc). Managed to fill that up, too. On 256GB now and I only have 30GB free. No videos, no music. Just apps and comics and I haven't downloaded my recent Marvel purchases yet. :p

I'm at 32gb on my pro 9.7 and have less than 8gbs left.

Still on the fence about going for the 256gb.

Since I usually sell my previous model to fund the newest version I predict the 64gb will not hold its value which is main motivation to get the 256gb.

I bought the 256 GB as well but got the cellular version which cost me around $970. I don't regret the purchase and while it's nice to have extra space and LTE as an option, I likely can get by just fine with the 64 GB model and can do without paying extra for the LTE model as I can just tether to my phone whenever necessary.

While I have been considering returning the 10.5" I bought and buying the new 12.9" iPad Pro, I'm now also considering returning this one and instead ordering the 10.5" 64 GB from bhphoto for $649 tax free & free shipping which would save me around $320, plus the savings of not paying extra for a tablet data plan.

In general the base models hold their value better. 64GB is plenty for most people. Remember you have space left on a 32GB model.

Once apon a time 8gb was also enough. The closer the iPad gets to being able to run desktop class apps I predict 32gb won't be enough soon.

People are offering me $300 for my 32gb now lol.

Either way for me, getting more and more into video editing and working with raw files, I think 256gb might be the better route. Better to have it and not need it but we'll see. I love getting deals and I'm sure a great deal will pop up soon.

unless you don't upgrade every year, the base model is more than enough. It would take a few years to use up 256gb even if it were possible, and by then most people have already upgraded to the next gen model which will probably have a higher base storage anyways.

That is also true.

My macbook is 256gb and I'm nowhere near filling that up.

This is the reason im sending back the 256 and have ordered a 64gb from BHphoto. Even though the roughly $140 savings really don't hurt my pocket at all, it just pains me to know that I have no need for 256gb and could use that money towards some accessories etc. I upgrade every year, and downgraded from a 12.9 128gb pro and never even touched half of its storage. I work with the govt and my plan is to use it for document scanning, and hand written notes and a 64gb is plenty enough. Higher storage models don't retain their value as much as the base models. This proves true for every ipad and iphone .

I ask an honest question, and get this obnoxious drivel back. It's time to change your diaper, Sparky.

Oh, sorry... "ur" diaper.

I'm on the fence between 64GB and 256GB. I posted earlier that I was going to get 256GB, so I'd never have to worry about space, but right now I'm using 28.6 GB on my iPhone, and 6GB of that is pictures (which I won't take on iPad), so I can expect about 22GB for sure used on my iPad, and then that leaves 42GB left of 64GB, which is quite a bit. Plus, using MEGA, I can get 50GB of cloud storage free on top of that. So really, it looks like it makes no sense for me to spend an extra $100 for 256GB, but I'm just scared I'll somehow manage to fill up 64GB as apps grow in size, or as I start using the iPad for more and more things.

Ordered a 64gb LTE 12.9 Pro. With iCloud match and iCloud photos it was not necessary, I only used 20gb on my 64gb iPad4, which is the same as my 64gb iPhone.
