unless you don't upgrade every year, the base model is more than enough. It would take a few years to use up 256gb even if it were possible, and by then most people have already upgraded to the next gen model which will probably have a higher base storage anyways.

Exactly. I am actually downgrading to the 64 GB 12.9" from the 256 GB. Also, I'm not taking out AppleCare+. I most certainly will be upgrading next spring to the latest so it's needless money spent. Besides, full Xcode will never make it to the iPad Pro so you will need to get an MBPro for any legitimate coding.

In general the base models hold their value better. 64GB is plenty for most people.
Agreed. While higher capacity models sell at higher price than base models, you never recover the $100-300 extra that you spent upfront. Stick to base model if that's all you need. Besides, the current 32GB and 64GB aren't quite storage-starved unlike the 8-16GB base models back in 2013. The 8GB iPhone 5c for example, you pretty much needed to be empty in order to install the iOS 8 OTA update.

The 9.7 IPP that I used for 14 months had 40 GB of stuff (I bought the 128 GB version). That was a lot of unused storage.

This time, I went with 64 GB on the 10.5. Sure, I get quadruple the storage if I paid a little more, but its likely that it'll be storage I will never use.

I pay for iCloud storage though, to keep my stuff in sync across all my devices so LTE connection on the IPP suffices almost all the time.

Truthfully, I actually did want to get the 256 GB version, but it was out of stock. So maybe I'm just trying to justify my purchase...

I ask an honest question, and get this obnoxious drivel back. It's time to change your diaper, Sparky.

Oh, sorry... "ur" diaper.

It may have been an honest question, but ended with comments about wanting bragging rights and impressing the ladies.

I regularly work in buildings where I get little or no cellular access so I just cannot rely on access to the cloud. I also travel a fair amount for work and while I can load and unload movies it's sometimes just easy to load a bunch of them every month or so and not worry about space. Everyone has different needs.

Agreed. Besides, I reckon bragging to ladies about your 512GB iPad is a huge turn off.

I went with the 64gb as well, having had the 128gb. Outside of large file hording, you should be fine.

If you think you'll be fine, you probably will, and vice versa.

I never said anything about bragging rights or ladies. That was another commenter.

You're right, everyone has different needs, which is what I said in my original post. But the majority of people fall into a category where they do have regular cell access, and so they can use the cloud. I'm not saying that people should be forced to use the cloud, but only that I don't see a strong need for 512GB on a mobile device. It would seem to me that so few people have an actual need for very large storage, perhaps for reasons like you cite. But, what they heck, if they want it, go for it. From my perspective, it would have made more sense for Apple to offer 128GB for the new iPad, though, and not go up to 512GB. But that's just my opinion. Apple marketing makes decisions that are not always clear.

Hmm, that's maybe a ~$50 or less cost increase for $200 higher revenue. I think the why is pretty clear.

I have been debating with myself literally for the past few days over whether to return my 64gb for the 256gb. The main reason being for the two weeks of the year where I go away and might want to watch a movie or TV show with no signal or WiFi and I was debating how much room a few digital textbooks and some notes for university might take up. I even auctioned a return to apple.

I've now decided however that I'll use the difference I would've spent on storage to get the Apple Pencil (I was planning on getting anyway) as most of my files will be stored in iCloud and I currently have over 40gb free with pretty much all apps loaded and a few magazines and can soon delete music which I won't listen to on my iPad for another 5gb space. I can easily stream most of this as I have unlimited data on my iPhone with tethering and even then will mostly have WiFi available.

I think unless you plan on storing lots of media or have lots and lots of massive apps 64gb is absolutely fine.

On another note (apologies for thread hijack) do I need to cancel a return request or will it just expire? (Apple online U.K.)

I went with the 64GB. I wanted the Jet Black iPhone and was forced into 128GB, and I have 92.7GB available on that. Still salty I was forced into that unnecessary upgrade just for the color I wanted. My 10.5" Pro has like 40GB free after all my apps are installed, I'll probably never fill it before it comes time to upgrade.
