When are people going to understand that Apples "Pro" is just a label for "better". A device cannot be "pro by definition. Only the user can be a professional (shortened to "Pro"). Various professions have widely different requirements for a device so even the basic iPad can be used efficiently for professional work. Others need a MP or a MBP or a Linux cluster.

A good Pro knows which tools to apply in which situation to do the job. The wannabe "pro" buys devices labelled "pro" and think they are doing a better job just because the device is labelled "pro".

We can defend the IPP all we like, but it's just a fact that iPadOS is just not where it should be.

I think buy it if:
- You just want the latest and greatest and you're not price sensitive. Else the IPA 2020 is great.
- You use a specific pro app that uses the hardware tech in the IPP 2021 and which makes it demonstrably better.

Else, no-one else should buy the IPP 2021. Not yet. Maybe when iPadOS 16 comes out and we have proper multi-monitor & multiple user account support etc. I do think that Apple will do these things - but for the moment, the marketing simply doesn't live up to the reality.

"Else, no-one else should buy the IPP 2021" - kind of an outlandish statement; people can buy it for any number of reasons beyond what you mentioned.

I agree with Blue Coast…

Users should only buy the 2021 iPad Pro if they have very specific needs that only it can fill. Otherwise, even older iPad Pro devices fit the bill if all you need is the form factor.

I don't buy into the need for any justifications on a purchase or "should only buy if they meet the requirements I dictate".

Agree, the first gen iPP is still good for most things. However, “Want” can be a much stronger driving force than “need” and I suspect many at MR is driven by “want” and not “need”.

I think all the circumstances he mention is understandable, but if users are wanting more out of iPadOS (multi-user account and proper monitor support)… they should look toward the Mac. Of course, I want more out of iPadOS…. but it doesn’t deter me from enjoying 2021 iPP and features that come along with it.

But that statement above applies to everyone who desires to have the latest and greatest tech, especially iPhone users… those who upgrade annually.

So it boils down to two reasons to buy (which may or may not overlap) -

1) I need one
2) I want one

Which basically covers any purchase of anything.

Or perhaps if you want a killer screen for hdr content. That alone was worth 300 I shelled out. Of course the free AirPods helped too.

Lol, that’s what I kind of gathered from the post. Especially the first one that was mention… but I do understand your point, that individual shouldn’t have to justify their purchase.

However, I tend to move content from my Android phone to the iPP or iPP to the PC, and the transfer speeds is substantial coming from the 2018 iPP. And it seems Apple is gradually showing why 16GB RAM will be beneficial with the removal of RAM limitation in iPadOS 15… maybe @LogicalApex can breath a sigh of relief.

Ok, it was a slight exaggeration. I’m just saying that for ‘regular people’, the IPP is overkill and there’s no justification to getting it unless you want a really really nice iPad.

And of course people are free to buy sophisticated equipment to do whatever they want with it.

Want to buy a Leica camera to take snaps at your birthday party? It’s overkill but, why not.

Agree with you 100% there. Having been a photographer for close on 60 years now - good analogy.

Clickbait. These days it’s all rubbish. He’s selling because:

1) he’s done with his ‘demo’.
2) he’s now bored with his new toy.
3) There’s so much Apple hate, he pretends to be a fan.
4) Anything for the click.
5) posting his rubbish pays for itself.

This place is so infested with trolls, we need a separate hate section.

You could make the argument that the iPad Air 4 and IPP 2020/2018 are also therefore overkill as you can do so much on the iPad Gen 8.

I think people just generally want the best iPad for their money, depending on what their budget is.

So like this guy right here?

The improved specs helps when viewing large raw files, the XDR display is great as well, as is the 5g when it's available.

I don't think multi-monitor support is something that the user base really needs, because an iPad is ultimately designed to be used while on the move. Perhaps multi-user accounts for families, but I fail to see how an iPad is any less pro simply because you can't share it with your siblings.

Notability has native iPad and M1 Mac apps now. Fantastical has apps for ever Apple device, from the Apple Watch to the iPhone to iPad to Macs. The hardware is here. What's left is for developers to play ball and port their Mac apps over to the iPad. And if they don't, perhaps they deserved to be called out as much as Apple, if not more. I mean, is it really Apple's fault that Google was a full year late to bringing split-screen multitasking support to their iPad apps?

Perhaps it's also time to start redirecting some of this anger and frustration to the developers who could make this happen, but aren't.
