Wow. I need to learn not to read these threads. People buy things they want if they can afford it. I’m not a friggin’ PRO by any means but I wanted a bigger and beautiful screen and that’s why I bought my first iPad. Reading these threads is a headache and it sucks the joy of owning a wonderful device. Sheesh.

We can defend the IPP all we like, but it's just a fact that iPadOS is just not where it should be.

I think buy it if:
- You just want the latest and greatest and you're not price sensitive. Else the IPA 2020 is great.
- You use a specific pro app that uses the hardware tech in the IPP 2021 and which makes it demonstrably better.

Else, no-one else should buy the IPP 2021. Not yet. Maybe when iPadOS 16 comes out and we have proper multi-monitor & multiple user account support etc. I do think that Apple will do these things - but for the moment, the marketing simply doesn't live up to the reality.
I believe you generalise far too much from your own preferences and requirements. For the vast majority of user, iPadOS 14 does a great job and I cannot say the 15 looks worse. Can it be better? Sure but so can the MacOS.

So like this guy right here?

The improved specs helps when viewing large raw files, the XDR display is great as well, as is the 5g when it's available.

I don't think multi-monitor support is something that the user base really needs, because an iPad is ultimately designed to be used while on the move. Perhaps multi-user accounts for families, but I fail to see how an iPad is any less pro simply because you can't share it with your siblings.

Notability has native iPad and M1 Mac apps now. Fantastical has apps for ever Apple device, from the Apple Watch to the iPhone to iPad to Macs. The hardware is here. What's left is for developers to play ball and port their Mac apps over to the iPad. And if they don't, perhaps they deserved to be called out as much as Apple, if not more. I mean, is it really Apple's fault that Google was a full year late to bringing split-screen multitasking support to their iPad apps?

Perhaps it's also time to start redirecting some of this anger and frustration to the developers who could make this happen, but aren't.
Austin Mann do like his Apple gear but this review is far more creditable than any YouTuber. Austin is a nerd but from a professional photographer perspective and not tech perspective.

I agree, blaming poor third part apps on Apple is not fair.

But that’s exactly my point.

I’ve made quite a few posts on these forums making the argument, that if you were a professional watching the Apple event where the IPP 2021 was introduced and you jumped out of your chair in excitement about the gains that this would bring to your job everyday - then absolutely you should get the IPP 2020.

I’m making the point that the IPP isn’t (yet) a device that is pro in general purpose computing terms - in the way that the Mac pro definitely is is - just for a very limited subset of activities (as explained by Apple in their marketing event).

So the IPP is almost like a specialised hardware device that does a few things really well. But it’s not yet a professional general computing platform.

And of course, if you want a luxurious IPP - then go for it.

It’s the same sort of thing as buying a car. Most people don’t ‘need’ a car that accelerates to 100kph in a couple of seconds, with luxurious leather seats to get from A to B, do they? But there’s still a market for it.

I was havering between the iPad 4 and the iPad Pro. The only real requirement for me in terms of specification was disk space: I don't need a lot of storage, but 64GB feels too small. 128GB gives plenty for my current and planned needs. The base iPad 4 only has 64GB, which rules it out, leaving:
  • iPad Air 256GB £729
  • iPad Pro 128GB £749
The iPad Pro has a better screen, better speakers, double the RAM and so on. These weren't essential, but they're nice to have for £20: it arrived last night...

You could make the argument that the iPad Air 4 and IPP 2020/2018 are also therefore overkill as you can do so much on the iPad Gen 8.

I think people just generally want the best iPad for their money, depending on what their budget is.
I’d say that the IPA 2020 is much more what we’d all expect a standard tablet to be in 2021 as a complement to a typical smart phone.

But yes, I get your point - there is an element of user experience that is nice to use and thus important to us all & that’s what Apple specialises in. And the IPP 2021 is very nice.

I’m not completely down on the IPP, I’m just trying to say that it’s not a pro general purpose computing platform. It’s all down to the software - iPadOS - limitations.

I mean if it did have the features that it could now easily steal from the Mac and shake off its smartphone roots, I’d buy the iPad as my primary computer, no question about it. It would probably be an iPad Air though! But that’s just my choice as I’m a ‘midrange guy’.

Can you show me the cheaper iPad that has a 12.9”?
Of course not. A 12.9 inch screen is important to you, obviously. And that’s ok. I’m not saying to tech enthusiasts / prosumers to not buy the IPP. If you want the latest and greatest go for it.

I’d make a similar argument that the iPhone 12 Pro Max is overkill for most people. But for some, having the best smartphone photography and the best smartphone movie/tv viewing experience is really important. And that’s ok.

I’m trying to make the point I guess, that most people have budget compromises that that need to make in their lives and that often Apple’s ‘pro’ hardware isn’t worth paying for (if you have these compromises).

What I’m not trying to say is that, if you’re a tech enthusiast and money isn’t an object to you (as far as laptops, iPads and phones go - I bet there are very few prosumers in here with a high end Mac Pro) then this is all a pointless argument. You’re going to go high end. And that’s ok.

I may have to do the same thing in not reading any more threads like this.. I love love my iPad, use it every single day, I play games on it, I do some shopping on it.. I buy the M1 iPad Pro because I “Need AND Want” it lol. I was using a 6 year old technology and I felt it was time to upgrade. The awesome screen quality watching 4K/8k videos on iPad is a big bonus. 8gb of ram is plenty enough for my personal use, 256gb storage is plenty for my personal use. I have been using 12.9 inch screen for 6 years, I’m not interested in downsizing to the smaller screen size at all..

I won’t watch any of those videos because I am happy with my iPad. I find the whining of certain reviewers of not able to do this or that really annoying. If they really need that function, go use the other device that can use it.

Yes indeed. For real work usage, I basically have to do remote access to a real computer.

Real work?
Like building a house? Or fixing a car?

Real computer?
Like an ENIAC? What defines a real computer?

Why is it so hard to understand that the "Pro" part on the iPad (and the iPhone and the Mac) is ALL marketing. It's a premium machine with premium parts and premium prices.

Is my work less real because I can do it on an iPad? Is that a pejorative on my work or your ability?

And no, I wouldn't be bothered about macOS on an iPad. I want ipadOS to mature (and yeah, it's maturing).

Why? If it came down to people buying it who had some kind of legitimate work use, the sales would be way down. I am a Pro who can’t do much of his job on it.

I think people were just expecting more from the device after seeing the hype Apple made at the iPad event. It does look like Apple is starting to follow through by removing the RAM limit. To some people, it doesn’t make sense to pay much more when a laptop in the same range exists that is much more capable. To other people it makes sense to spend that money just because they enjoy it.

A month in and i still love my 12.9 1TB - it’s fast, plays games that i like to play, handles ALL my daily activities, office runs like a champ and watching movies is a pure joy. Didn’t buy because of wishing it could do what it couldn’t already do, looking forward to ios15 but to me, those features are all bonuses. I bought it because i could and frankly didn’t want to lug a full laptop around for personal use.
