Aside from Safari, when has Apple used this term?

Source please.
You don’t know the Apple website? That’s disappointing.

The section „iPad OS“ after M2 and Display

Actually, no. Apple was presenting iPad as another type of computer, meaning that you're not restricted to needing a desktop, keyboard and mouse to do computing. iPad’s interface is so simple and intuitive that this kid could just pick it up and use it. And with the creative tasks she was performing it never once occurred to her that she was using a “computer” until her mother called it one.
I never saw it that way before. Makes a little more sense from a marketing standpoint too. Thanks!

Do you always believe the seller's advertising? 😏

I mean, nobody has time to memorize the entire Apple website. Especially one sentence from a small paragraph on an iPad Pro from 2 years ago (too long Apple, time to release the new ones already)

I have never seen so many people pushing their own negative personal experiences and opinions as facts that they think should apply to everyone, while at the same time totally ignoring the many people with positive experiences. While they are certainly entitled to their own opinions, it sounds very immature, narcissistic, and arrogant to me to totally disregard others that like and use their devices to the fullest.

I’m happy to see that OP is starting to figure out how to make the iPad work for them, even if it’s not met all of their expectations.

I like to think about it like trucks and cars. Both can fulfill 99% of the same tasks but the truck is more suited for heavy workloads and the car is more suited for travel and ease of use. But a truck driver wouldn’t try and convince a car driver that trucks are clearly better and the same goes vise versa. Different people have different needs and they’ll pick the device that does the better job for them.

Well, what is it?

don’t get me wrong, I like my iPad Pro as an entertainment system on the sofa. Like Steve used the first one.

But Apple.com is promising “Desktop-class apps”, as a device to use it with keyboard connected to a display, for “video conferencing apps”, to “Draw a masterpiece, take notes, or knock out a business plan” and “write your novel, crank out a term paper, or rip through your inbox”.

Or just watch movies…

What is the iPad when you advertise it as an ultra mobile working device, as a stunning display and as an entertainment device?

I'm afraid that because Apple itself doesn't clearly formulate what the iPad Pro is actually supposed to be, they don't know. They advertise the device as useful for everything. The one size fits all. but most things not really good.
I don’t understand why you are confused at what it is? It’s a versatile tablet.

Why are you highlighting that paragraph? Yes I use it for conferencing apps, I do draw on it (I am not going to say they are masterpieces tho) and use that art work on my website and slide decks, I take notes on it with the pen as I am a Treasurer and attend events, of course you can write a business plan on it or novel or term paper and I have multiple inbox’s I use on it.

Here’s what I did today (alone) I have written a Google Apps script to pull down pdf’s from a repository, filter them based on criteria and move them between Google Drive directories - downloaded 10k+ now down to 300 ish. I have never written a Google Script before so I used ChatGPT app (amazing btw). Now I have undocked the IPP from the MK and am sitting on the sofa with it in portrait manually reviewing the 300 pdf’s. I also used a ps4 controller to play COD Mobile. Had 2 meetings on Teams and worked in Outlook on emails.

That makes it a fantastic device for me.

For iPad to act/perform like a desktop computer/laptop, it has to run macOS.

That’s not happening. At best it’s a companion device and organizer. But can be a primary device for nontechies with very simple needs. And as always it depends on the user.

I am very tech savvy, and have run my real estate business with my M1 iPad Pro 11 for over two years with much more than simple needs.

This is exactly the kind of nonsense I'm talking about

If it is running on M2, why not? Apple can't or won't?

Difficult to know for sure, but probably won't.
Looking at this page, and clicking on any app, you'd find that they are only for iPhone and iPad, that they can run only on them, not on a Mac. So, most probably apple can't make macOS run on an iPad. Interestingly, you'd find a lot of 3rd-party apps that run on both iPhone and iPad, but won't run on a Mac. But those 3rd party apps run on any Windows tablet or laptop, for they were originally made for Windows.

The same can be said for any kind of forum - that's what they exist for.
I'm talking specifically about arguing with other people over something subjective and telling them they're wrong. That goes for any topic, not just tech. I see people on music forums arguing with people for liking a certain song or certain artist. So when I said it's sad for people to argue online, I meant it's sad for one person to be a fan of something and another person saying "you're wrong for liking this".

Reading through this thread, I started longing for Linux and started searching for aftermarket high-end touch laptops like Dell XPS, Lenovo Yoga, Huawei and other brands to put in few Linuxes in it. 16GB RAM and 512GB Nvme SSD is not a problem with them. I can let Windows 11 stay just for fun. It would be even nice, if I can detach the keyboard.

I have a friend who’s a successful realtor and he’s the one who convinced me that iPad Pro is the way to go. He loves the small size and the built-in 5G, because he’s frequently on the road and loves being able to send documents to clients from anywhere without having to find WiFi.

I work from home, so I have little need for the iPad, but I thought it would be great to take when traveling, especially when traveling for photography. This thread has helped me figure out how to do a lot more with my iPad. Your setup is inspiring.

Not wanting to state the obvious, but it’s not a laptop. If you are not taking advantage of the touch screen (and pen) and portability as a tablet then a laptop is the better product. Just because it’s price is “into laptop territory” does not make it a laptop.

I don’t have a magic mouse but a 5 second “Google” came up with lots of videos of scrolling, here is one

I use MS Office on it - granted it’s no MS Windows Office but I wouldn’t call it “fairly slow” but I have a bugbear with MS on iPad - so let‘s not go there.
Turns out — Magic Mouse 1 will not scroll on iPad. Apple doesn’t support it, the bums.

I recently spoke to a commercial airline pilot who said he would never be caught dead with a laptop in the cockpit. For him iPad is THE device.

What are your thoughts iPad skeptics? Not everyone codes or edits videos.
EFBs don't need to be laptops. It's there to manage loadouts and look at approach plates, etc. No input needed, just recalling what are essentially maps and a bunch of lists. Basically replacing flip charts.

Here is Apple on connecting external usb Drives. I use external drive, but connect to a usb powered hub for passive SSD. You need to connect directly to USBC iPad port not magic key board for data.

Regarding performance, I travel with both my 16 MBP, and iPad Pro. For my computing needs MBA or iPad alone won’t be good. I use Lightroom, best way for me to use sliders is through pencil, I have more control. Try it out, and see if it works. Apple M series chips are powerful but for me I need Max chip in MBP.

If you don’t want to bother with adapting to device, sell it. If you gonna keep it, might as well use it to max and try solving some of the issues. Did you look at Affinity for photo editing?
lol. This is why nobody can reason with you. Replacing DxO with Affinity. Really, two different things.

I don’t think Windows is a better system, I was just pointing out that adding touch screen support to a desktop OS isn’t a big deal.

It’s a slippery slope. Fingerprints on my MacBook’s screen are a bad enough annoyance already, making it a touchscreen would be even worse!
