As a tablet the Ipad wins but as a gaming machine the switch wins. There is a slight overlap as the iPad will play games and some types of games it plays very well but generally...no.

Bump...now that Ios13 is allowing PS4/Xbox One controller input..can Ipad/Apple FINALLY start seriously getting into gaming? The dang Ipad Pro is already stronger than the Switch, why not go all in?

The only way for iOS gaming to even compete with console gaming is to have AAA and exclusive titles such as PS4’s god of war, spider-man, horizon zero dawn, TLOUS, the list of titles goes on. You cannot compete with PS4 or even the xbone if you have only titles like “frogger” or some really lgbtq game like that ice skating demo in the keynote 2019 presentation.

Even with the ps4/xbone controller support now in iPadOS, the games must be there. Throw in cross platform multiplayer and some COD you might have some interests. Otherwise iOS is known for gaming to appeal to children.

Yea I don't think in no way it could compete with PS4/Xbox but I feel like the Ipad is more powerful than the switch. You're right, Apple needs to either REALLY get going on some AAA titles or REALLY get to paying AAA 3rd party for ports. I have 2k20 for ipad and it looks amazing I know they could do it

Because game developers aren't going to port AAA games to the iPad until there's a sufficient market to justify it and consoles gamers aren't going to switch to the iPad until there's enough games. Apple Arcade will most likely just be full of mobile games and crappy ports. Just look at what they showed off at the event... frogger.

As for the Switch specifically, well, Nintendo's like Apple in a way and wants everyone on their own hardware. You're never going to see Mario Odyssey and Zelda BotW types games on anything but Nintendo hardware.

It would be a huge competitor if the games are the same. You still have some Nintendo games that are only on that platform. Portability? the Switch is lighter and you don't need to bring extra controller. Nintendo allows you to pair up several users. Will the iPad allow you to do that? that's another question. But it will be fun to use.

I Hope Controllers one day will have their force feedback/ rumbling things supported. Those add a nice layer to the gaming experience on any platform in my opinion.

Got a Switch some days ago, i really like it, but i also like playing Oceanhorn on my iPad Air 3 with the Steel Series Nimbus controller too. So if you can, get both.

Theoretically some could adapt the 120Hz Pro motion display of the iPad Pro and enable FreeSync or GSYNC type features for gaming.
unfortunately there’s no way the iPad Pro could withstand the thermal heat and battery drain such gaming would require.
I‘d like to see an option to run games at 1080p at 120Hz on the iPad Pro. Sadly word is such a feature would require a Apple Arcade paid subscription for Premium games.

I'd like to look at this from a slightly different angle. Why isn't Nintendo making Switch more appealing as a more generic content consumption device? AKA....a tablet. I don't know if Nintendo is pushing back on apps like Netflix and Chrome or if there is some other reason (piracy?) that Switch isn't getting the capabilities of other tablets. iPad probably isn't going to threaten Switch's position as a handheld gaming device, but could Switch actually convert some iPad users over if it had some basic functionality? I know Switch would be more appealing for me if it only had a web browser. Thoughts?

I think we need to look Beyond the Nintendo Switch and focus on the Future, which is Games as a service platform. Where you just pay a monthly fee, log into your Nintendo account and play on any device with an internet connection.

Nintendo will eventually go this route, Movies have, Music has, games will do so as well.

also Nintendo is resisting Apps like Netflix and Chrome, because you already have other devices which serve those purposes, Nintendo is focusing on a Gaming console period. Plus all that 3rd party apps do is data mine customers, what websites, you visit, what times of day people play. Etc.

that being said. I would like to see a Nintendo Switch Pro with 1080p OLED Display and a new hardware. Heck my Note 10 Plus uses a Samsung 6.8” OLED Display Id love to see that display size not the old 6.2” LCD in a new Switch Pro.

Developing any set of apps that are close to iOS quality will cost Nintendo dearly, that’s why they are not interested in more functionality outside of gaming.

I'm wary of game streaming as I'm not convinced the lag is something they will be able to solve to the point that one cannot tell the difference between playing remotely and locally.

Not really. They have Hulu and Youtube on Switch. No idea why they stopped there. Why no Netflix? Doesn't make any sense. And if these apps did exist on Switch it in no way change Nintendo's focus on gaming. It is simply extending the devices functionality. The fact that PlayStation can play movies doesn't change the fact that it is primarily a gaming console.

Would love to see that as well if they can manage the heat.

Nintendo doesn't need to develop the apps. Netflix develops their own apps. So does Google. Nintendo just needs to give them the ability to put their apps on Switch like they did with Youtube and Hulu.

Whoever is putting the work in doesn’t seem to be interested. That may be based on a broad misunderstanding of the Switch user base, but I bet that most Switch customers don’t buy it as a multi purpose device but as a pure gaming device and that they have their other needs covered.

I'm sure, given the opportunity, that Google, Netflix, and others would love to have their apps on Switch. And I'm equally sure that they would be welcome additions by many Switch customers or would be customers.

Nintendo platforms last until the next one rolls out. The switch is based 0n an older Nvidia designs I believe and Nintendo’s focus is gaming. They have a track record of having way less bells and whistles in their software until now. Online gaming was late, game communications were late and there are no apps other than games. I highly doubt they could even deliver an OS sophisticated enough for an iOS competitor.

There are already apps other than games. Hulu and Youtube. The capability is already there. Switch isn't going to stand toe to toe with iOS in all things, but it is absolutely capable of providing some basic functionality that tablets provide.

I don’t have a Switch but know that it will always provide a superior gaming experience due to it being made for the task.

Sure iPads are great, but not the most ideal for mainstream games no matter how great the screen and specs may be. Would love to see a Witcher 3 port to iOS/iPadOS to prove me wrong.

And I bet that Nintendo would care if it would suit into their plans. The switch is out for years so either they don’t want more apps that are no games or they are incapable of on boarding these developers.

I think your previous answer is more likely. Nintendo is just always late to the game (no pun).

let’s look at what is Lag, currently I have an 11ms ping. It takes the human body 400ms (milliseconds) to see something like a green light with your eyes, the brain sends a signal down the body to the foot to hit the gas pedal. And muscle fibers in the foot start to move that’s 400 milliseconds and those are measured in the best Pro drag racers who need to launch down the drag strip.

now apply that to a controller and a video game. Its not that bad. Heck 1 Frame of a 60 FPS video game is 16ms a lot of Pro street fighter players look at frame times. It’s even less when playing at 120FPS +

Also, I play Gears of War 5, Black Ops 4, Starcraft 2, Online, at present day. And I have no Issues with Input Lag or Latency. Yes the games are Installed locally and maybe that’s Good Enough it sure is now.

So I think the argument is false about lag and online latency, when it’s good enough now at present day, to snipe someone jumping and running away from you bullets flying everywhere and you can still snipe someone with accuracy in various shooters. Someone is gonna complain about Lag that’s it’s messing them up while platforming or jumping in story mode ?
