Unless Apple goes with an all glass back on the next ipad pros, i doubt that wireless charging is coming to the ipad anytime soon. I don’t see Apple will ever use an all glass back anyway. Can you imagine the cracks? When Liquidmetal is ready for mass production, that could be when Apple incorporates wireless charging in ipads.

Yikes. I bought a wireless charger for my X. Takes so long that I usually just use my iPad Pro fast charger. Can’t imagine how slow my 12.9” would charge wirelessly lol. Would drive me nuts.

It’s going to take days for iPad’s battery to be charged wirelessly.
Not accurate - I use the Logitech Base stand at my day job and when I leave work both my 10.5 and 12.9 are fully charged. It’s damn awesome and don’t want to upgrade to the 3rd gen pro because I’d lose this amazing feature.

That isn’t wireless charging, the stand is making physical electrical contact with the smart connector.

It’s as much as wireless charging as the Qi pads are - you simply set it down and it inductively charges through the SmartConnector without you plugging in a wire which is what we are talking about here. Different tech from iPhone 8 and newer, but still the same endpoint.

No it isn’t, it is not at all the same. It isn’t inductively charging at all, it is simply making physical contact with the smart connector to pass power to it hence how it is able to supply enough charge. Try covering the smart connector with something thin that isn’t conductive like a sheet of plastic, I guarantee it won’t charge like it would if it was really inductive charging.

There is no inductive charging on you iPad via the Smart Connector. The smart connector is simply making electrical contacts that charge you battery, just like plugging it in.

IN ACTUAL USE IT IS THE SAME FREAKING THING AS WHAT EVERYONE IS CALLING WIRELESS - I DON’T HAVE TO PLUG IN A FREAKING CABLE TO CHARGE MY IPAD THAT IS ALL I CARE ABOUT - WHO GIVES A CRAP IF IT IS QI OR THROUGH METAL CONTACTS BUILT INTO A STAND - THE FUNCTIONALITY OF PLACING THE IPAD ON A STAND AND IT CHARGING WITHOUT YOU PLUGGING ANYTHING IN IS THE SAME AS IF I GOT A QI CHARGER STAND FOR IPHONE - THIS FEATURE IS GONE WITH THE 3RD GEN - THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS THREAD - WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT TO CALL IT ITS NOT THE SAME AS PLUGGING IN A CABLE

Sorry but is just like plugging in a cable. Remain calm, just a forum here.

It actually isn’t:

1. You have the port open to use for other things - I have often plugged accessories into the Lightning port while charging
2. The “cognitive load” of oh I have to unplug my iPad before grabbing it and then remembering to plug it in when I get back to my desk is vastly different - it is a much more elegant solution than plugging in a cable
3. IN ACTUAL USE IT ACHIEVES THE SAME EFFECT AS A WIRELESS STAND WOULD - ESPECIALLY THE CURRENT ITERATION THAT HAS A SWEET SPOT - otherwise it won’t charge!

4. If you don’t want to call it wireless charging - FINE - that isn’t the point - the point is it achieves the same desired result of being able to just set your iPad down on a stand and it charges without you needing to do anything else.

If it was the same as plugging in a cable - you know what - I’d be plugging in a cable - I’m not.

The advantage of wireless charging is that you have a certain degree of freedom when placing it on the charger. Charging it using the smart connector always requires magnets to make sure the iPad is aligned to the accessory. Whether this method is more convenient compared to attaching a cable is questionable. Even the convenience of Qi charging is questionable since the degree of freedom is low.

What ever, just do not use the word inductive. Have a great Sunday!

In practice no - Qi has a sweet spot (until AirPower rolls out ...) - you have to line it up just right for Qi to work - the stand magnetically sucks it into place without you worrying about anything lining up - both have sweet spots, I’d argue the Logitech Base Stand is actually easier in practice to use than making sure you don’t bump your phone or dont line up your phone when you place it on that sweet spot.

Actually you are right about the Logitech stand. It looks quite convenient although I’ve never used it and I hope charging isn’t too slow. The new placement of the smart connector is quite annoying though and limits the design of the accessories.

Yea speed wise it is much faster on the 10.5 since its a smaller battery, for how I use my iPads (8 hours a day behind a desk at my day job) - I find that they do the trick of me never having to worry about charging and that I’m leaving the day fully charged.

I’m also worried about the new placement as you’d have to make a different stand for the different sized iPads because it is no longer in a universal spot but different based on how big your iPad is. Also troubling to see no 3rd parties making keyboards or anything for the new iPads - we may be done with the 3rd party market of expanding the usefulness of the SmartConnector - hope I’m wrong.

If there were wireless charging in the iPad they could easily make it match the power of the cable. Phones have a small area and Qi charge 10 watts. With the iPad easily 6x more area it could potentially Qi charge at 60 watts, which is much more power than it charges over cable.

The Logitech Base is pretty awesome. I miss using it already with the new iPad. It was convenient to just drop the iPad on the base and know it was charging vs pulling a cable out every time and plugging it into the outlet. First world problems for sure.

While it’s not technically wireless charging. It’s as convenient as wireless charging, which is what I believe musicpenguy was trying to portray. Charging through the smart connector was a bit slower than using the cable, but it freed up a port for a dongle, it was angled well for typing with a Bluetooth keyboard or even just using the iPad as a digital picture frame while it charged. Hope they update it.

It doesn't support it plus wireless charging is far to inefficient and slow to be beneficial for charging an iPad. 7.5 watts charging an iPad Pro will take forever. The standard charger that comes with it is underpowered and wireless is half that speed with a little bit more than half with 7.5 watt chargers.

Sorry to have to inform you, but you're dead wrong. Qi charging on an iPad Pro is quite feasible and doesn't take all that long. Check this out: https://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/base-ipad-pro-stand#specification-tabular. Some bright lad at Logitech happened to notice that the Smart Connector can transfer power into as well as out of the device. I've been using one of these for quite a few months now and have no complaints at all.

This won't work on the new 2018 model because the location of the Smart Connector has been moved from the left side of the case to the back. Betcha Logitech is already hard at work on a replacement product.

Qi charging has a max wattage of 7.5 watts. it was very well known that the included 12 watt charger wasn't able to charge the iPad Pro decently and that was almost double the power. I think wireless works on phones but not a full size iPad.

I think expectations are everything - I use the Base stands everyday on my 10.5” and 12.9” Pros and I’m not using it to get them charged up as quickly as possible, but by the end of an 8 hour work day that I’m leaving with iPads fully charged and not once during my entire working day worrying about plugging them in - if I’m doing heavy video encoding sure during those periods the chargers will simply prevent the iPad from loosing charge and doesn’t give you much gains, but over the course of a day it is a great experience and one I’ll miss when I do eventually upgrade to new hardware.

I think there is for sure a benefit, you do need different expectations with the current tech however.

You keep giving theoretical reasons it shouldn't work. But I have this things sitting on my desk that damn well does work. Care to explain why?
