I guess I'll get there sometime earlier in the morning.... maybe 9 or so.

The first batch is gonna have defects just like the first batch of 27inch imacs.

I am going to wait till the first group of testers buy the units and when they report the erratas to Apple, then the second batch will be the one to get once Apple announces that all errors are fixed.

Who cares you get Applecare with it..

So let's assume we can't preorder. How early do I need to get in line for something like this?

So tough to say since it's impossible to gauge the quantities they'll have vs the desire for the device. Plus we need to know the exact time.

The original iPhone release was at 6pm. I think I lined up around 2pm and had no trouble getting it. The second release they did in the morning, I think at 10am. I think I got there around 6am-ish that time, so for both lines I did about 4 hours.

The one thing that helped was the second time around, people on this forum started threads for the exact Apple store location and told us how long the lines were, so you could get a sense of how many people were there at what time.

All that said, FWIW for original iPhone release a friend of mine told me he went to the mall at 10pm and just picked one up with pretty much no wait. Second release, similarly I think he said he went around 6pm, no wait.

If the rumors are true about there only being 200K units at launch, I can't believe they will be readily avialable unless you wait in line for a good amount of time.

I think if there really are production problems, its more likely Apple will delay the launch, rather than launch with limited supply and risk unhappy customers.

I think 200k units is enough for at least one weekend of strong sales. As long as everyone who is willing to put in the effort to get one that weekend can get one, I don't think having no/limited supply for a little bit after that will hurt them.

hmmm, how many iPhones sold in the first weekend? And now we are back to the "how well will iPads sell" debate. LOL

Hah yeah, I was just looking that up. I saw somewhere that it said 140k 1st gen iPhones were activated in the first 30 hours.

I think there will be a preorder because Apple would remove the notify me on the apple's website. Granted, if we don't get an email by next Friday, then they have cancelled the preorder.

Sure, Apple can notify us when it actually go on sale. Well, at least, we will know the exact date of release. It would be nice that we could pre-order like we were able to on the iphone 3gs!

Well, the notify thing just says something like "notify me when when the iPad is available to order," not anything specifically about pre-orders. So it could end up that they don't send out notifications until it actually goes on sale.

My back is bothering me today, and I will probably need to go lie down a bit. If I had the iPad, I could keep reading and posting stuff in this forum, or read an ebook, or watch a video, etc, etc, while resting my back. It's going to be a long month wishing for an iPad every time my back acts up. I hope I can be excused for wanting to get my hand on one as soon as humanly possible.

Actually laying in bed will make your back worse! Don't do it, best thing to do is stay active. I have been dealing with chronic back pain for years now and the bed is my worst enemy, laying in bed with an iPad will only worsen matters.

Do a Google search on back pain and laying in bed, you will be glad you did.

Of course having said that I would love to have an iPad for some surfing while in bed LOL but I will try and restrict my use to the toilet and the couch instead :D

If there's shortages of these things then we will see a lot more campers out there at launch day.

Except that Apple says there is no shortage and won't release launch #s like Sony/M$/Nintendo do when they launch a game console.

The perception of shortages might cause the "ebay crowd" to camp out, but then again they got burned with the original iPhone, which was thought to also have shortages but didn't really, except in some areas, and then only briefly.

Now if Apple came out and said there would only be a "limited supply" at launch, well then, katie bar the door, and bring your boxing gloves. It will be FanBoys vs. eBayers.
