This definitely makes the air 5 a lot more interesting.

its a bit a shame for the 2020 iPad Pro buyers. Their device is only 2 years old and losing out on some interesting features.

The problem with the 2020 iPad Pros is they were basically sporting a 2-year old chipset already when they were released.

One of the reasons I delayed upgrading from my 2017 iPad Pro another year.

I don’t know
i think the base iPad will just end up getting the latest iPhone chip or 1 gen behind
those users don’t care about these features

Keep in mind though, this stuff is currently only M1 exclusive for performance reasons

That will fade away and, "M or not" I think all iPads will have access to these features in a year or two

All of this is a side point though

Even M class users should have the option to disable these things completely
That's what I'm advocating for

I dunno about that.

Storage on older iPads is slower. Constantly utilizing swap will likely take a toll on performance.

The DTK Mac Mini had A12Z but it did have 16GB of RAM so it probably wasn’t hitting swap often.
Probably. However I think a lot of users would gladly take somewhat lower performance and have things stay in memory. And I also think that, while assessing the tradeoff, Apple said to themselves "that will give a reason to 2018 and 2020 iPad pro users to upgrade"

One of my biggest fears was that my iPad wouldn’t make the cut. Looks like I have to start saving up again for a new iPad Pro. Hopefully I can get the M2 at launch
