The only thing I hate about traveling with it is the fact that everyone is curious about it. It's nice when people ask questions, but sometimes I just want to read my book!

I love answering peoples questions. It's kind of an early adopter requirement.

I was stuck in traffic for 3 hrs driving down to SD and I watched the LOST finale again = WIN.

I love this thing!

Final comment, as I sat comfortably in my aisle seat on the plane, I couldn't help but feel sorry for the guy next to me with his laptop. He could never extend the screen out, he had to have it in his lap to fit, and he looked so uncomfortable using it.

That's always been my biggest issue with using a laptop on a plane (since us average joes have to ride in economy class). I can put the laptop on the tray, but then have to keep the lid half closed. Or if the middle seat is unoccupied, put it on the middle tray and work at an angle. Talk about awkward!

The iPad will make computing on a plane SO much better, and I can't wait to try it.

I'm going away for six days and my macbook pro is staying home. Bringing my 32g wi fi..... now only if my camera adaptor will arrive by next Friday!

Yup, agree with all of the above -- it is a stellar traveling companion.

Just got back from 10 days in Japan, the 14 hour flight from NYC is really one of my unfavorites, but this time I loaded my 32GB 3G with a bunch of movies, a few games and a bunch of work PDFs and the entire flight was much more pleasant.

Not having to be paranoid about battery life is the "killer app".

On a 2 day trip out west, iPad works great! I don't have to worry at all about the seat in front of me on a plane reclining and smashing my screen, or hold my laptop at an awkward angle. Of course, I also had the luxury of a bulkhead seat...but for those times I'm not in the bulkhead, the iPad pays dividends!

Airport security was so easy, didn't have to take anything out!

iPad does everything I want it to do, call me a happy traveler!

Love it for travel

The weekend after we bought our iPad, we were staying at an Embassy Suites in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I took the iPad downstairs to the dining area to enjoy a cup of coffee while reading the news. Instead, I spent the morning providing short demos to guests, including an entire rugby team and three businessmen who kept apologizing for invading my morning coffee - they just couldn't help themselves because of their curiosity about the iPad.

Before I left for that trip, I was developing more individual city guides for my iPhone app city guide company, but the excitement and curiosity of those hotel guests changed my mind. I temporarily set aside the customized city guides and created an Anywhere city guide which could use filtered custom searches for everything someone might want to find in a city anywhere in the world.

We launched the free Anywhere guide inside our iPad app over the weekend, and now I'm back to building the custom, hard-wired city guides. But it was completely because of the reaction of those early morning hotel visitors that I decided the change the development timeline for my company.

It's definitely a game-changer device. It was so nice to take a trip and not have to lug along the laptop!

I just got my iPad yesterday, and thought it would be great for traveling, and you have convinced me! One question, though (and I know I have only had a few hours to play with it, so maybe have just not found the right place to look). I have it sync'd to my macbook iTunes, and all is well. But, when I travel, I like to be able to listen to podcasts on the plane. I can sync my podcasts just fine at home with my computer, but is there a way to update them on the iPad without a computer? I don't see a way to sync my iPod to the iPad, and that is o.k. -- I'd be happy to listen to podcasts via the iPad, but just haven't found where to update them. Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Kudos on a nice trip and I hope you had fun in Houston! I'm currently traveling for the first time with my iPad and it's simply awesome. My casino trip has taken on new dimensions thanks to this and like you said about feeling sorry for the dude with the laptop... Well right now I'm posting this from the delta downs food court enjoying a nice coffee at a very small round table and I'm able to use my iPad comfortably while my girl is stuck juggling the MacBook and reaching for her coffee that was only able to be placed behind the computer! :D

i feel stupid asking this... but is the ipad JUST a big ipod touch, or is it a actual tablet, i mean could it replace a laptop and be able to handle word and publisher and whatever else an ordinary lpatop does:confused:

I've not really done any travelling yet but I just love the fact that I was able to download the Euro player app and within a minute I was able to watch a fluid tennis video stream. This is going to come in really handy when I want to watch a bit of tennis and the World cup during work! :p

What is the name of the app that allows you to do that?

The iPad isn't really designed for that type of corporate IT productivity (in my opinion). If you spend a lot of your time knee-deep in MS Word or Excel then you'd obviously be better off with a Windows laptop/netbook. Thankfully, the iPad is a lot more than that. You have to try one to experience it. Best to list out your requirements before diving in though. There are lots of other options available.

This builds a great use case. Exactly how the iPad was designed for. Some people still don't get it. Good show, good show.

My iPad 3G has been great while traveling in the RV. No more hunting for WiFi.

I traveled to Albany, NY last week for work and only took my iPad. I was able to read a book, watch a movie on the plane. It was so simple and easy. A laptop is too bulky and awkward to use on a plane. At the hotel, I had free wifi and was able to check all work and personal email as well as read my book. At the airport, I used my Sprint aircard and mobile router to send emails for work and give demos to other curious travelers.

Several people were curious and I was more than happy to give a demo of the features and the apps.

I see no reason to carry my laptop with me on the road again.

I have used the iPad twice the past two weekends attending to business conferences.

It's a great travel device. Beats a laptop although I found myself wanting a keyboard for long email messages I needed to send out. So I broke down and got another apple wireless keyboard. It's small enough to stuff into my briefcase.

However one of my weekends on business was on Miami Beach at the Palms Hotel for a conference. Man AT&T 3G service was so slow down in Miami. I could barely use it most of the day when I needed it.

I am an early morning person. So while I could barely use 3G service from 10am-10pm. I woke up at 6am on a Sunday and actually got great 3G speeds. It's shows you AT&T needs to build more capacity in heavy tourist areas. The hotel tries to charge $16 for wifi access and I wasn't about to pay extra for that.

Im going to be traveling at the end of this month to lebanon. I have a 13 hour wait in frankfurt and im thinking it would be perfect to waste some time :D

However, I dunno what I will use it for when i get from my trip, august 8th, where Ill have my macbook. I dont know if I can justify 500+ dollars for something i may not use much, except in ^^^ types of situations.

I'm about to head to Dallas for my brothers wedding. After this post I can't wait to test my iPad on the road. Thanks for the post!:D

Having read this, I'm really looking forward to heading on holiday with this thing :)

Picked up mine on holiday in SYD but alas no internet connection to set up the thing with so I could only use it back here :/

My wife and I just got back from Maui and we didn't bring our notebook PCs; only our iPads. After all, it was a vacation...:) We both have the 16 GB WiFi flavor and they were great. I brought along my Virgin BroadBand2Go USB 3G modem/Cradlepoint 350 setup and we emailed, Facebook'ed, loaded pictures from our cameras, browsed the Internet, read books and played some games. They were excellent in the plane, too, as we flew in cattle class where using a notebook requires contortionists skills as someone also pointed out earlier.

We did see a couple of people with iPads both during the flights and while in Maui. The iPad has found a niche, IMHO.

P.S.
The BroadBand2Go/Cradlepoint setup was almost flawless. Coverage was great. The only glitch I noticed is that I had to reset the USB modem every 24 hours; I don't know if this is a modem problem or if the service drops sometime in the night. I may do a little experiment at home and see if this behaviour is location dependent.
