Same with my 10.5 with cellular. Have done everything all above have done to no avail. Except using cellular so will attempt that and advise.

EDIT. Tried to download over cellular but would not permit me to without WiFi. Returned the sim to my wireless modem (only have wireless) and tried again and it downloaded OK??? So, have Apple fixed the issue??
What I did was to let it download over wifi n then switched to cellular before clicking the ‘install now’ button.

THE SOLUTION

Use the Apple Configurator 2 !

Connecting to the ipad on my macbook pro by finder and try to update also did not work either and resulted in a 4000 error. Apple says its a bad usb cable or connection. That is total crap. Many others are reporting this error aswell on the internet. As if we all have a bad usb cable or connection on the macbook or imac.

It just does not finish and produces a 4000 error .

But updating by the apple configurator 2 Worked perfectly! It took a while and it had to restore the backup after the update, but all went automatically and it updated !

I think apple should debug this issue as it hits many users

15.0.1 update didn't work OTA or through Finder.

Using Apple Configurator 2, however, did. No need to put into DFU or Recovery Mode, nor was it necessary to reset any settings or turn off WiFi.

The iPad did have to go through a data recovery (the screen "Attempting data recovery" came up, along with a progress bar), but that only took about 15 minutes for me and was successful. I left the iPad plugged in and had Apple Configurator still up during this time. As with any update, make sure you have a backup (either local or iCloud) just in case.

Something is obviously broken, but hopefully this helps someone.
Thank you. This worked for me. (and it happened exactly as you describe: "attempting data recovery" etc)

I've been able to update to iOS 15.0.1 on my iPhone just fine, but I've attempted to update to iPadOS 15.0.1 on my iPad ten times now and it always ends in "software update failed." Restarting doesn't help. Anyone else seeing this?
Oh yes.. i think its a incompatible file for iPad Pro ..took forever to verify and says its installing but doesnt cause ipad don't shutdown.. Ipad only having this problem ..i even reset my ipad to default in OS 15 and still dont work

Like many others, my iPhone updated quickly with no bother but my iPad Pro 12.9 2nd gen just would not do it despite repeated attempts, restarting etc. I finally connected it to a windows desktop and downloaded iTunes on to that, and managed to download it through that though it took a couple of hours.

iPad 10.5 A1709 2018 also exhibiting this and has been since an IOS15 beta 2 months ago - tried many different things including reset network, wipe/install, DFU mode and still not solved (maybe 1 month+, actually have given up updating iPad as solution!). Will try the AppleConfigurator later (thanks for that!) but interesting as a result of this i left beta and back on general release it still happens, cannot install any update that Apple issues just get stuck on verify and/or unable to check for updates (despite being connected). I suspect this is actually going to be quite an issue to resolve as it appears OTA Updates do not fix or resolve, fingers crossed for configurator.

2nd gen 12.9 pro here.
It is on 15.0.
After repeated attempts via ota and finder, it has downloaded 15.0.1 but cannot install it.
Other i devices are up to date. iPhone X was also troublesome but to a lesser degree.

Used this method with Config 2 and my iPad Pro 9.7 updated to 15.0.1

Same update failed message for my Air2. No hurry to sort it so I'll wait until Apple publishes an advisory.

Looks like it is happening more with the 10.5 pro/cellular. I’m having the same problem as well.

I tried using a Windows laptop with iTunes to force update my wifes iPad Pro. ITunes is the current version but I kept getting a message that in order to update ipad Pro to 15.0.2 you must update iTunes.

Here’s how I finally updated my iPad Pro 2nd gen to 15.0.1 last week and to 15.0.2 today…was having same issues as everyone else here; stuck on “verifying update” part no matter what I tried to make it update. I have a cellular model but no active plan on it currently…had an old SIM card laying around and figured what the heck, let me put it in and see what happens…I toggled the cell data button on and went to download the 15.0.1 again, and guess what, actually updated this time!!! (turning on cell data, even with a non working sim, somehow triggered something to update the OS 🤷🏾‍♂️

There’s one thing I should clarify: you have to delete the previously failed download by going to settings>general>iPhone storage and manually delete the 15.0.1 file as rebooting will not automatically delete it

Hope this works for y’all, as it did for me!

I decided to try this but with a working SIM card and it worked also, saved me the hassle of using a PC/Mac. Not sure why Apple isn't doing anything about this though, 15.0.2 is to address 15 Zero day vulnerabilities that are exploited in the wild but peeps with 10.5's are left in the dark
