Just wanted to confirm my 9.7 pro, which was not updating, is now updating… I put my iPhone SIM card in it and it started updating immediately, popped the SIM out and put it back in my iPhone, and all is good now! Thanks for the info!

Here’s how I finally updated my iPad Pro 2nd gen to 15.0.1 last week and to 15.0.2 today…was having same issues as everyone else here; stuck on “verifying update” part no matter what I tried to make it update. I have a cellular model but no active plan on it currently…had an old SIM card laying around and figured what the heck, let me put it in and see what happens…I toggled the cell data button on and went to download the 15.0.1 again, and guess what, actually updated this time!!! (turning on cell data, even with a non working sim, somehow triggered something to update the OS 🤷🏾‍♂️

There’s one thing I should clarify: you have to delete the previously failed download by going to settings>general>iPhone storage and manually delete the 15.0.1 file as rebooting will not automatically delete it

Hope this works for y’all, as it did for me!
You are amazing, more than a "Genius"!!! I made an appointment, for the 1st time ever, even though I have two iPad Pro's and an iPad 5, to go to the "Genius Bar" at the Apple store here in Santa Monica.

That "Genius" couldn't figure it out, and suggested that I do a backup, (which I had already done), next to reset my iPad, then do a restore from my backup. I was surprised to do a speed test at a prominent Apple Store, on the 3rd St. Promenade, in Santa Monica, has a VERY slow download speed, about 12 megs, while an upload speed of about 30 megs. So with my home internet & WiFi running at 250 megs, I was not going to wait forever for the restore process at the store.

I also had brought my iPad Pro 2020 model because the Mic was not working for apps that were given permission. Siri HAD been working, but not voice commands for either the voice recorder or the iTunes store. Somehow, the day before, in "cleaning" the mic holes, the voice recorder & iTunes started working, but not Siri.

So, this same "Genius" bar tech, had me do the reset and wait till I got home to do the backup restore. This left my iPad Pro in a fresh, reset mode. I went through the basics to get it up and running. The "Genius" tech had me retrain Siri, which heard the mic for the setup sentences, but no does not work to "Hey Siri". I have to push the top left button, the off button, to get Siri.

The Apple "Genius" tech didn't help at all. We just went through the script he has, to simply reset anything he couldn't figure out.

I am SO GLAD that I did NOT reset my iPad Pro 2017, as he suggested, to get it to update, BUT found your REAL FIX here.

I am also glad that you point out to go into iPad storage and DELETE the previous download. After doing that, and putting in an old, non-working SIM card, "Presto", immediately, the download at my 250 meg speed was less than a minute. I then clicked on install, and within about 4 minutes my iPad Pro 2017, had updated with NO ISSUES, and restarted.

I think Apple should hire you, or pay you, to go around the country and show the "geeks" at the "Genius Bar" that the ONLY solution to problems they can't figure out, is NOT to always do a reset and restore. What a waste of time that trip was, and unfortunately, for the restore from backup, I must not have had it set to backup my music videos. Fortunately, I had them on my main PC, and just copied them to a USB-C stick and moved them back to my VLC player on my iPad Pro 2020, and then copied them back into a favorites playlist.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your, quick, simple fix that actually WORKS, without resetting my iPad to factory settings, and needing to restore everything.

Simply, amazing, that you knew the "trick", but the "Genius" at the Apple Store didn't. Oh, and Siri still dose NOT "wake' to Hey Siri".

Thanks for the informative discussion. Same problem updating Pad Pro 10.5 inch cellular with no SIM to 15.01 or 15.02. No success with varied errors over repeated attempts via fast home WiFi, erasing remnants of prior install attempt each time. After looking at first pages of this thread, removed empty SIM carrier and then had failures installing via iTunes under Win10 and Mojave. Same also with iMazingl, but that failed with extended cryptic error message. Checked thread again, swapped in active SIM from iPhone and 15.02 installed. left apple feedback as suggested earlier in thread. Will also send a message to iMazing which has been highly responsive to other issues, though this isn't their problem.

This issue affects 9.7” and 10.5” iPad Pros. The 9.7” just refused to install iOS 15.0.2 and also failed to reset itself. So I followed internet guides to put it under DFU mode and iTunes let it restore to 15.0.2 after failing twice. Had nervous few minutes when DFU restore failed twice. But in the end, it was successful and now correctly installing 15.1 RC.

I have a 2nd gen iPad Pro with 512gb storage and was going crazy trying to update to 15.0.1. I tried through my laptop (PC) but it has a 256 gb ssd for the C: drive & a 1TB for data but the operating system is on the C drive for fast boot ups. Well, I plugged the iPad into the laptop & when prompted in iTunes click update. It did a Back Up instead, filled the C drive & failed in the Update. I have no idea what to delete, uninstall or how to fix the laptop…it’s still working but almost filled up.
I thought when 15.0.2 came out I might have a chance to update…NOPE. Same problem.
I came across this forum & saw the remarks about removing the empty sim tray (after deleting downloaded update files) I was in the ‘stuck on verifying’ cycle when I popped out the sim tray and lo and behold, it started to update.
Thanks to all the great information here, I now have the update installed.
Whew and Thank YOU.

I previously reported a failed wifi update on my Air2 and the issue with not being able to update via iTunes (you need to be on the latest version of iTunes error). I tried the wifi update again this morning and it went smoothly.

I had the same issue updating to 15.02 with my iPad Pro 2nd gen. I had tried multiple over air updates and then via Finder when connected to my Mac.
I then contacted Apple support. While talking to a tech support person, she suggested turning off my passcode.
I did that.
The update then proceeded as expected.
I was updateing via Finder. During this process it indicates what it is doing. After it completed the update install it also updated the firmware. First time I had seen this. Anyway all worked fine after it completed the fw update. So perhaps this was a known issue.

Hi guys new here. I’ve too had trouble downloading iOS15.02 with the same problems as everyone else here.
I tried everything other sites suggested without succes. I have an iPad Pro 10.5 cellular
I had no trouble at all with my non cellular iPad and my iPhone 12 pro
as I am actually selling the 10.5 I thought I’d update it to the latest iOS for the new buyer
i even resorted to a full factory reset as it didn’t matter as I was selling it anyway, but still didn’t work
kept doing the verifying install loop and saying will try to install later tonigh. Well luckily I came across this forum so was going to try putting in a SIM card. I removed the sim tray and without reinserting it again or a SIM card went to settings first and retried the instal. Instantly the screen went black and the familiar apple and install bar came up
it did this twice and when it was done it said iPad iOS 15.02 installEd. Yahoooooo!! Thank you guys so much you are all legends!!!

iPad Pro 10.5 cellular, stuck at iPadOS 15.0, cannot update to 15.1 either. Even after full reset of the iPad, didn’t work.. inserted a SIM card and suddenly it did work. I didn’t even need to re-download again the update and kept staying on wifi. There was (is?) a bug in the “verify update” clearly. Thanks for suggesting a solution.

Hmm, after previously experiencing trouble updating my Air2 to 15.0.1 (which was eventually resolved), I decided to do an update (via iTunes) to 15.0.2 today. It went through almost the entire process before reporting a problem. Now it's stuck in recovery mode.

I set up a chat with apple support online. Went through the various fixes I'd tried and she suggested using another computer. Tried that, but it's telling me I need to install the latest iTunes to update to 15.1. When I look for an update I'm told I have the latest version. I wonder if it's because that machine is a Windows 7 machine? The iTunes version is earlier than the version on my Windows 10 machine. Windows 7 not getting anymore updates?
Anyway, she suggested sending it in for a service (we don't have an apple store in my state). She gave me the option of two local service agents. I choose one and she sent me a link to book an appointment. I took it in and got charged a $49 fee - the service wasn't comped by Apple. But miffed about that. I should know in a few hours how they went.

I got my iPad back from the service agent. They managed to restore it and update to iOS 15.1. Luckily I was able to then use the backup that was done during my own failed update process.
The tech mentioned that maybe there could have been a problem with my lightning cable. We have a mix of genuine and AM cables in the house. I do recall seeing a "this device may not be supported" message pop up on my iPad when I first plugged it into my laptop today. I guess it's possible that an AM cable was the cause of the failed update and everything that happened afterwards. I'll have to be conscious if that in the future.

Certainly can be an issue since if you are not using the cable from the enclosed box and purchased from third party vendor. I have this to test Apple cables and I’ve bought some cables that claimed genuine but aren’t from even though it came in similar packaging https://www.chargerlab.com/power-z-mf001-mfi-lightning-tester-voltage-current-meter/

I thought, eureka but then remembered my iphone is on eSims but popped out the tray on the iPad and that also did the trick no sim required, but thanks to the above for answering this question as has been driving me made 3-4 times a day as the reminder popped up...again.

To add to the information, I never deleted any downloaded files before updating by adding my SIM and all is fine.
I was happy not to have any extra ’junk’ on my iPad. And I left the SIM card out but put the sim tray back in. It’s looking like the tray itself was part of the problem (that never should gave occurred in the first place?) so if I have this problem again, I’ll have to remember to try to take it out as well.

Also helped to:
- connect ipad to mac
- start recovery mode on ipad
- install update from mac’s finder while in recovery mode
