You seriously believe that Apple gives a damn about battery life? They have a many years long credit of sacrificing battery life to save .1mm that nobody asked for. All this battery saving is just their convenient excuse to make you buy a new product. I have iPad 2018 and the battery is great. Performance is great.
I’m confused, where did I say they do care? I’m saying the opposite.

100% Agree regarding the iPad Pro 9.7. My only complaint is the Apple Keyboard (folio, I think.). I am on my second one, and this one hasn’t worked in over a year. I want to buy another one, but prices and limited availability have made it too difficult. But the iPad itself… still awesome. And I’ll use it as long as I possible can!
I don’t have the keyboard, but the keyboard for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro has always been described as weak. People have replaced it over and over because it isn’t very durable. That’s not normal with Apple products, it was a bit surprising, honestly.

But yeah, agree on the iPad, it’s still awesome, and I’ll keep using it for as long as I can, too! iPads have great longevity even if they aren’t updated. For content consumption, the iOS version isn’t all too relevant, for many things. So even if you don’t update - like me - or if it reaches the end of its support lifespan, the device will work for many years.

Unlike 32-bit devices, performance isn’t unusable on iPadOS 16. Even if battery life isn’t great, it is completely usable without having to tolerate awful slowdowns. That pretty much guarantees that the device will be usable for a very long time.

New features of iOS ???
Ah you mean every year the number changes… right. Well as long as it has patches, its fine.
Because:
Bigger display than phone? Checked
Touch display? Checked
Bluetooth? Checked
——————————-
Do wake me up once there is New feature, i am quite bored with new features.

Because i am forbidden to set my default install path to usb oh iOS 17 Messiah!

That means iPadOS 16 will be my final iPad OS, as I have no interest in buying another extra large phone. I was a big fan of the iPad for years, but the device just doesn’t work for my real productivity projects.

Which iPad do you have?

keep in mind that iPad OS and IOS is not the same thing there might not be a big upgrade coming in IOS 17 but for iPad OS 17 apple may be planing a major overhaul

I hope the A10x in the 2017 Pro is supported for one more year. Still works great, would be a such a waste to cut it off

I expect the iPad min 7 this year as it gets a non promotion 90hz frame rate bump to resolve the concern about motion issues. That and a m2 8gb ram, goes with 128 go SSD baseline. If if costs slightly more so be it. Next year it will be The Air’s turn. Hope this years requirements don’t change much as far as supported devices.

Battery life isn’t great on iPadOS 16 though. Even though it will probably be supported, I don’t see Apple making any efforts whatsoever to maintain the best possible battery life.

iPad 7 is only 3.5 yrs old. It should get at least two more updates. As such, I believe and hope all A10 and up iPads will get iPad OS 17 and 18.

Instead of worrying about what iPads get the next iPadOS maybe ask if there's any reason to upgrade?

All the fuss about who was cut off from Stage Manager quickly died down once everyone actually got to try it out.

New iPadOS releases reminds me of how some grocery store love to move the different isles and big sections around every few months to make it feel like something is being improved upon or renovated.

But it's really not more than that -things being moved around, and maybe some new decorations, displays, furniture, lights. But all the groceries are the same as before.

EDIT: IGNORE - I misread the article. It WILL be supported. Apologies.

Pretty harsh for owners of iPad Mini 5th gen. It was only released 4 year ago (2019) and I bought mine new as the most current iPad Mini less than 3 years ago. It seems like a big middle finger to tell users of technology that is only three years old that it is now obsolete.

We'll see how much courage Apple has this year - how much longer they are willing to listen to the dufuses in marketing that told them dropping so many macines last year from support would sell so many more Macs... which of course peed off so many, made millions of people and businesses so angry, and disappointed, that Mac sales took a 40% dump.

Apple needs to stop the mysterious bullpoo and state EXACTLY how long each device will be supported into the future. Businesses, and regular people, don't like trying to calculate future costs based on Apple's secret crystal ball.

On that note most business's keep their devices 3 or 4 years depending on categories. Phones and iPads would be 3 years I think then swap them out. Computers are 4 years typically. So nothing Apple is doing would interfere with deployments/usage for enterprise community.

What are you talking about. The article says iPad Mini 5th generation and newer will be supported?

I'd also take this leak with a huge grain of salt. I suspect there's testing at Apple happening to see how the oldest devices are handling the new features in iOS/iPadOS 17 leading to all the rumors of devices being left out of the newest version of the software, but I suspect Apple's strong preference here is to not drop support for any devices with iOS/iPadOS 17, even if it means limiting some features on older devices, mostly so they don't need to continue offering security updates for iPadOS 16. Then come iOS/iPadOS 18 I wouldn't be surprised if anything with a chip older than an A12 was left behind.

Apple needs to be more aggressive killing off older devices to clear space for greater product innovation. I fear all these older supported devices are holding us back. People are happy to buy the new products when support for their old one is ended.

What the hell kind of businesses are you talking about? Real, private businesses use their hardware AS LONG AS THEY CAN make more money with it. Or more to the point, for as long as they can avoid spending money to keep doing the same thing they have always done with the machine. Computers do nothing fundamentally different now, in comparison to 2003. Go to any corporation, any organization, any hospital. 10-15 year old machines are NORMAL.

Maybe not if you're a Silicon Valley tech graphics startup. That is not the real world.
