Got it to work in the end with my Magic Mouse but I move the mouse an inch and it flies across the whole screen... can’t seem to turn down cursor speed anywhere. Will be interesting to see how this feature develops, perhaps in iOS 14 it will be marketed beyond an accessibility feature.
how did you get it to work with the magic mouse? via bluetooth? I can't get it to show up in the pairing screen...

Have to do it through Accessibility > Assistive Touch > Pointing Devices > Bluetooth Devices and have Assistive Touch turned on if it's not already.

I had to restart my iPad a few times and disconnect the mouse from my Mac but eventually it worked. I was asked for a pairing code, it's 0000 for Apple mice. Presumably this is just a beta quirk.

I was trying from the accessibility pane, with a un-paired magic mouse that was lying in a drawer that wasn't connected to any other macs...
I'll try again with a few restarts, thanks! and thanks for the 0000 tip!

wait, who said that text selection doesn't work? is there proof? this is supposed to simply simulate everything a finger does: if you can select text with your finger you should be able to do it with the iPad mouse cursor. Has anyone tried it?

the twitter thread linked just says that it doesn't map the right click to contextual menus for formatting text, which is fine because you can't right click with your fingers on an iPad. you can long press, which I assume is supported.

This is just a replacement for fingers. Nothing more, nothing less.

Good luck! Although I managed to connect mine, the cursor speed is so fast it's basically unusable, and I can't find where to adjust the speed. Will try again in subsequent betas.

I’m guessing they didn’t mention it on stage because they want the iPad to be thought of as a touch device.
Good grief.

No. That's not why. Do you know what an Accessibility Feature is? This isn't a pseudonym for Advanced Feature like most of the dolts on this website think.

The iPad is a touch user interface. No "thinking of" required. Cursor support enables people incapable of holding the iPad or lifting their arms to still use the device. Someone who can only move a few fingers can work wonders on an iPad with a mouse and a keyboard.

No. This isn't there for you or anyone else to get rid of your laptop.

Which I'm sure works perfectly fine for someone with very limited range of motion who is using the cursor, which is exactly what this is intended for.

What about people who have gross motor skill issues and can't accurately touch a screen, but may be able to move a mouse and click?

Tracking speed is literally an accessibility feature, I really don't see how you can argue against it. I get the point you're trying to make, but that just doesn't fit.

Yeah I hear you, but I know you hear me as well.

It IS working. See here at 2:40 mark

Yeah I get it - I'm personally not crying out for "full" mouse support, but interested in trying it to see what it's like. I'm not adverse to using Accessibility features in other ways, I'm sure Apple knew that features like Smart Invert would be used as a proxy dark mode and Assistive Touch would be used as a virtual home button. Remains to be seen whether mouse support ever moves beyond primitive accessibility use, or they open it to a wider audience.

Yep, people like me with essential tremors - a mouse is a great help when the tremors are really acting up. Control of tracking speed is a necessity.

I got it working with an MX Anywhere 2 mouse. But the curser is a big circle. Is there anyway to change curser?

Good grief.

Auto Brightness is an accessibility feature too apparently. Yet many with perfect vision are using it.

The features are there to be used as one sees fit. No qualifications necessary.

Mouse support seems like the best feature for me as well for this release. got a microsoft surface mobile mouse to work instantly with iPad on iOS 13. Txt selection works, however you have to double click the txt, and hold and drag after the second click. Works wonderfully if you get used to the double click to drag, select. Then select and cut options pop up, which you can click on instead of right click. It’s really quite nice. As a bonus, the scroll wheel on my mouse works! only problem is doesn’t have natural scroll. Old style scrolling, i.e. scroll up to go up. Really has become nearly a laptop for me so far. The big wheel cursor is annoying but I have gotten used to it within a few hours after having iOS 13 installed.

Going to try my surface mouse. Yeah the big circle curser is aggravating, I hope I get used to it like you did

Look on YouTube:
Text selection works exactly as it should, as does mouse tracking speed.

Read this Twitter thread. Bottom line, Apple added mouse support purely as an accessibility feature. I wouldn’t get my hopes up that this is Apple embracing mouse/cursor support on iPad. It’s not.

Yeah, I've been trying to say this to people without offending them them or crapping on them. I did try it with a five button Logitech mouse today and it was kinda fun but it's clearly not meant to be a mainstream feature.

I would speculate (and it is only speculation) that it may follow a similar path to iOS 12 Smart Invert -> iOS 13 Dark Mode however. Something with a genuine accessibility benefit now but perhaps also a testing ground for something that will see a wider audience later. I could be completely wrong, however.

I think it is ment to become a mainstream feature. In the end people with handicap are a large customer group and Apple or any other modern company will try to satisfy these people. And a mouse support that does not let you work systemwide would be nonsense, they could save their time developing it if it isn’t a fluent experience everywhere in iOS.

They also will have learned that they do not sell more MacBooks just because you can use a mouse, but instead, the iPad becomes more attractive if you can use one there. It makes also sense for students who have to do heavy text work, now they can do this together with a keyboard and a mouse. For students that don’t have rich parents a basic ipad is much cheaper than a laptop you can actually use.

I think I pretty much agree with you there. If anyone is going to cannibalise you make sure it's yourself.

(also I removed the gibberish first sentence from my previous post. I was testing the auto word suggestion thing and didn't realize I'd posted it!)

I’ve connected my Magic Mouse 2 via lightning to UCB-C but can’t work out how to connect without the cable. Is it really possible with Magic Mouse 2?? Doesn’t appear as a Bluetooth device,

Thanks

Magic Mouse 2 not supported yet. There is no way to enable bluetooth discovery mode and it seems that it is missing the software that lets you connect to bluetooth by direct connect it like on macOS when you first use the mouse. Hopefully apple will correct this issue but seeing how it's suppose to be an accessibility feature, they may not. Luckily I had my older Logitech bluetooth mouse laying around from years ago and it worked great, connected right to bluetooth.

Anyone know the steps to fully turn off mouse support on an iPad. Mine was working fine until I tried to use the same BT mouse with another device (MBA). I did get my MS Surface mouse to work with the MBA, but then it failed to work with my iPad Pro (10.5"). Now the MS Surface will not pair with my iPad.

However even though the Surface will not pair with the iPad, I still see the greyed out "pointer" button on my iPad which I want to disappear. Rebooting doesn't remove it. I find it annoy to see and would like it GONE.
