I've loved the iPhone 11 Pro Max itself. I would isolate "dumpster fire" to me, only with the bluetooth connection to AirPods. That is a brick indeed. iOS 13.1.3 just released and I just installed. Let's see if Apple engineering was able to tackle this via SW or if they have an unavoidable problem with AirPods and if so, I'm thinking they need to replace my 1st gens with ones that work - if any do?...

So far no AirPods have worked with my phone. Your description of the “signs” alien noises is very good.

They mention Bluetooth hearing aids and headsets in 13.1.3- I’m gonna upgrade now!

Womp womp. Just as bad as before. Maybe worse. I’m off to buy a new Pixel 4.

I need a functional phone that doesn’t drop calls, even if they fix the AirPods.

I have the exact same problem. While I was reading these posts from the OP. I thought it was me. You saved me a trip to return my iPhone 11 Pro. I’ve had the same exact problem. Music is fine. Calls crackle. Bought a new pair of AirPods. Same exact issue. Crackle. Other Bluetooth devices are fine. My iPhone XS is fine with the AirPods. iPhone 11 Pro crackles. I also cleaned my SIM. Replaced my SIM. Same issue. Really annoying.

Hopefully they come out with a fix. I can use other bluetooth devices or CarPlay without any audio quality issues. In fact, if the phone didn't drop calls constantly, I'd just go buy a non-apple set of earbuds and keep the phone. I can't deal with the call dropping issue.

My Pixel 4 will be here later this week. I'm not immediately dumping the iPhone as I'd rather keep it while the issues are worked out, but with the Intel modem I'm not 100% sure they even can fix the call dropping issue completely.

Think I have a similar issue. Iphone 11 pro.

Bluetooth speaker drops connection after 30 second. Reconnect it and it seems to work fine.

First bluetooth call of the day drops after 1 min and then seems fine.

Frustrating.

Dang, I was kinda hoping to make AirPods my "Christmas gift" but this is all very worrisome. I've made bluetooth calls with my 11 Pro in my non-CarPlay vehicle and it was fine. But yeah, I'll be tracking this thread in hopes people find resolution with a future software update.

13.2 iPhone 11 Pro Max. Gen 2 AirPods wireless case. AirPods are useless for phone calls. And for listening to music etc. they go back and forth from crackles and pops to fine to bad again etc. they worked seemlessly on my xs. Have had issues since day one with 11 pro max though.

Thanks for the thread, I was meaning to purchase an iPhone 11 Pro Max, I'll hang onto my 8 plus for a little longer... was hoping the 13.2 would show some improvement.

Picked up a set of AirPods Pro. Yep, they snap and crackle on phone calls too. Music is far superior to the normal AirPods, as expected. No snaps and crackles with music, same as the regular ones. While on phone calls, I get the same intermittent plinks, plunks, snaps, etc. as on the regular AirPods. I tried a couple other bluetooth ear buds, and phone calls are fine on them.

It seems Apple has successfully engineered an expensive phone that doesn't work properly with their own headphones.

Knock on wood.
ios 13.2 seems to have minimized or eliminated the random bluetooth drops on my anker sound core and Nissan Murano.

I am having massive issues with Bluetooth calls as well. iPhone 11 Pro Max, iOS 13.2

issues with airpod pros, airpod gen 1 and Bluetooth in my Mazda.

doesn’t happen on every call, but usually within 10 mins or so. Audio becomes garbled on my end and similar on the other end.
This is very similar to what I had with my iPhone 7 Plus about a year ago with a firmware update. It was eventually solved but made all calls untenable (I work remotely and am often on calls 4-5 hrs plus a day)

super frustrating as this is an otherwise great phone. I bought this about a week ago along with the airpod pros . Seems systemic , otherwise I would see if replacing the phone could help.

Apple please fix!

I should add that I get the pops as well in calls when the Bluetooth is “working” I.e. not complete garbled garbage

Updated to the 13.3 beta and that even seems to make wired EarPod calls drop or go silent. Basically have a $1.2k brick for actual phone work at the moment. Extremely frustrating to run a business with this product

That's terrible. I was hoping 13.3 would show some promise. I'm struggling with dropped call problems as well at the moment, this phone is terribly unreliable even after the new updates and multiple SIM swaps + network setting resets. I'm terribly frustrated with this phone. I wish I still had my X right now, and I'm contemplating finding another one on Craigslist and ditching this 11 Pro. My other alternative is some sort of Android phone, and that idea is rather unappealing.

I wanted to add some troubleshooting regarding OP. Since I’m having the issue as well. The click sound appears to be related to the UI of IOS or using apps or navigating when on a call. The more I use any app when on a call it’s as though the pop occurs when a certain View of an app opens or closes. This is the frustrating part. I tried disabling all sounds in iOS sounds but it still occurs. Really frustrating.

for example I’m using iMessage as I’m on a call. Sending messages. Clicking back and the click occurs when a view opens or loads.

Interesting find.

It also happens with my phone in my pocket - not using the UI at all, though. Wonder if it’s some sort of background process that is malfunctioning.

Worked with Apple support which started with resetting my network settings. EarPods and non-bluetooth calls seems to work now. AirPod Pros still get garbled nonsense. Maybe less frequency of occurrence, but still unusable. Cycling between iPhone speaker and bluetooth normally solves it, but not always. Testing normal AirPods again to see if those have same issue.

I may have multiple issues going on here - bluetooth and non-bluetooth related. All said - it's a pretty poor performing phone at the moment (for normal phone tasks)

Does yours drop calls, too? My 11 pro drops calls daily. It’s terrible.

FYI. Please download iOS Apple support app. start a chat session about this problem. In the chat with Apple. Copy and Post a link to this forum. The customer rep said the engineers are aware of this issue but didn’t give me more information. The more people who create a ticket and link this forum. The faster a solution will come. I’m extremely frustrated with this issue. They wanted me to restore my iPhone but since the OP here said he bought a new iPhone and same problem, I don’t want to bother trying this. Waste of time. I asked customer support to have an engineer send me an email to say restore fixes it, they said they can’t do that. I’m tired of this problem. This phone plus AirPods is over 2k. Ridiculous.

i have had the iphone 11 pro max since day one and have had none of these issues, no dropped called and no sounds issues with either the airpods gen 2 powerbeats pro or airpods pro

I received confirmation tonight that my last logging session was reviewed by the engineers, and they have found the issue. The AirPods issue will be resolved in an upcoming iOS update.

Update - I complained to support a bit, referenced this thread and asked to please talk with Engineering. Good to hear that they have ID'd the issues, though support did not confirm that when I was on the line with them.

I ended up going to to the apple store to drop off my trade in, and they ended up swapping phones for me. For about 5 days and ~ 8 hrs of calls, that seemed to have done the trick (iOS 13.2.2), but today, I have had two calls where the garbled/digitization with my AirPods pros have happened. Much rarer now, but we will see if it increases.

Looking forward to the update.

My AirPod Pros worked perfectly on my iPhone X, no real issues. I upgraded to the 11 Pro Max and now the left one crackles. It’s so annoying I was unable to listen to my audiobook. I have reset the AirPods and fresh installed iOS on the iPhone, which seemed to improve it for a while but now the crackling has returned. Let’s hope that software update comes soon and actually fixes this!
