The differences are so minimal from what I can see I’m happily ordering the 12 in either blue or black. The gap seems to have closed up much more this year.

Very true. It's so satisfying as a consumer to see that.

I really hope they keep that pattern going though. It would be a damn shame if they pull some audacious stunt next year like not shrinking the notch on the non-Pros and/or only giving 120Hz to the Pros!

IMO it’s pretty much guaranteed that 120hz will only come to the Pros, at least for the first 1-2 years.

Would be really sad if they go the iPad route for the iPhones.

In the next 2-3 years high refresh screens will definitely become incredibly common and I'm sure average consumers would also become aware of what it is (or at least know just by experience when a device isn't "smooth" enough).

The regular iPhones would stick out like a sore thumb in the entire smartphone landscape without that. Even more so, if the Pros have it and the non-Pros don't.

Yeah, the difference between the Normal and Pro has definetly decreased.
Both now have OLED, IP68 with 6m, ceramic shield and thinner bezels, so leaving the 3rd camera and slightly different finish/colors aside, there is no significant difference left. Upgrading from 64GB to 128GB is only 50$, if you need it.

I am happy that the 6,1" one got lighter (194->162g) and slightly smaller, while also a handy 5,4" size is getting offered. Two great choices for the majority of people. Before, the XR and 11 were considered as really good for their money, especially the battery, but they were just bulky and heavy. The gap between the 11/Pro/Max and the SE2 with outdated bezels & tiny battery was too big, but Apple finally listened and smoothed their range.

You mean like the iPhone 11 did with its LCD screen in a price-range where OLED was pretty much non-negotiable? ;)
I mean, I totally get where you’re coming from but IMO there‘s no scenario in which the Non-Pros will get 120Hz next year.

Touché.

Wishful thinking on my part I guess. Since the first time I swiped on a 120Hz iPad Pro, I've been hoping beyond belief for that to make it to the regular iPhone line up. It's a toss-up between losing the notch and having 120 Hz as my most desired features and specifically both of them are the ones that seem to be lightyears ahead in the future 💀

120 Hz will definitely happen next year on only pro-model. Probably exclusive on Pro for 1 or 2 years then it could be on the regular line up and Apple will bring a new exclusive feature on Pro (reduced notch, camera bump or smaller bezel for instance) and then adding it on whole line after 1 o 2 years and so on. ;)

Using a 7 from day one intensively I think the 12 will be a huge upgrade, I'm excited !

I agree. Going from the 120hz display on the iPad Pro to the 60hz screen on the iPhone feels... really bad. The difference is massive.

Hi everyone

I was firstly waiting the 6.1 Pro model. I definitely want to upgrade my iPhone to a new 6.1" OLED one.
But the rumors are a bit deceptive on the Pro models IMO. I mean if bezels, dimensions, notch, refresh rate is the exact same with the regular 12 6.1" I don't find the Pro model very attractive given the premium.

I mean yes you got a 3rd camera, 2 more Gb of RAM, LiDAR, stainless stell and maybe mm-wave 5G but that's it ?
Usually the gap was bigger because of huge gap in screen departement : better screen/body ratio, resolution and LCD vs OLED. If this year no 120 Hz, exact same front face screen look (a smaller notch on pro or 120 Hz would be insta buy for me) on pro while non pro getting OLED with thinner bezel exactly like previous pro models, I have hard time to see what is worth ~$300 premium on the pro model.

For the XS and 11 Pro, the premium was IMO more understandable because of the gap in the screen department which is to me the biggest selling point (but very subjective, others could value more camera, battery, size etc.).

Did I miss something exclusive on the pro model ? Am I the only one who are still not totally convinced for this year's pro models ?

Thanks!

Pro significantly brighter screen according to specs. Huge difference.

It's an improvement if you use your 625-nits screen at maximum often and need more.
IMO 625 nits is plenty enough expect the rare occasion I'm using the phone in very very bright / sunny environnment.
Watching HDR content should be as good since both can push 1200 nits if required. ;)

Calling it a "huge" difference is not appropriate except for people with vision issues (old people sometimes)

I’m 60 and it is a huge difference. Similar to buying the 2020 MB Air and always mashing the brightness button even though max because screen just seemed too dim. Returned Air and bought 2020 MB Pro and problem solved.

Maybe I should change my username.😉

The bigger reason if you don’t care about cameras is the extra 2GB of ram. I kept my 7+ for 4 years so that extra ram matters.

That’s not a huge difference and they match each other on max brightness with HDR. I think it’s safe to say they both have excellent screens this year and we can bid goodbye to the silly criticisms we saw with the XR/11.

30% is a huge difference. HDR Brightness means zilch. You need brightness in real world use, not synthetic video watching HDR tests.

Is anyone else thinking weight of the 12 pro will be a factor for comfort? I’m coming from an iPhone 8, it’ll be over an ounce more for the 12 pro. The 12 will be about the same.

No, because I’m coming from an 8+ which is heavier. I think that for you, it will be negligible. You’ll get used to it in a day, if you do notice it at all.
