That is exactly what I keep telling myself and my OCD ? … only 10 months.

I really wanted the Sierra Blue one, but all those gap problems, scratches on the frame or glass back etc. made it impossible for me to keep one.

Now I have a silver one and whenever I get annoyed by the scratches (... and you will get them on the silver one just by looking at it…) I can polish them out and the gap is really not that bad on that one.
But you still have a gap, right?

A very, very little one, not as bas as on some of the shown pictures here.
I really need to look closely in a specific angle to see a little bit of the metal underneath.
same over here. Since it is not affecting the functionality of the phone, which is otherwise perfect I am going to keep it. Will you keep yours?

I’m still not clear about the gap. Is this considered a phone with the gap?

Lol!! Are you doing a water resistance test????

yes, from that angle it looks like the metal piece is showing due to gap (right side above ear piece).
Here’s my old phone(left);
New phone (right )
It may not affect functionality, but looked
sloppy.

I also have a silver 13 Pro Max. I did not want to deal with polishing out scratches or seeing finger prints every time I picked up and used the phone, so I put a glossy clear skin on the sides. I can admire the beauty of the silver without dealing with scratches and finger prints. That would drive me nuts if I left it bare.

Yes, I guess I will keep mine.
The gap is definitely not as bad as shown on the picture from „Mikeeee“ above.

As I said, I had now a couple of Pro Max here and only two of them had no gap but instead a lot of scratches on the frame, glass back or on the camera module.
I must admit I am really picky and think a $1700 phone should be in perfect condition out of the box. But Apples Quality Control is really really bad. I also had trouble with the 12 Pro Max to find a Pacific Blue one without any damages out of the box. I guess most of the people do not inspect their phone as detailed as I do… OCD at it’s best :)

May I ask you which skins you are using? Do they leave any kind of glue on the frame when you remove them after one year? I always have my iPhone in the Apple Silicon Case but that also causes a lot of scratches on the silver frame.

Booked my appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow. Let’s see what they say in my market. Either way I’m returning it. When I saw pics of other phones without the gap my attitude changed to not settling. If it’s a known issue it could effect resale value when/if it’s time to sell. Also when you have people from support and Genius Bar tech saying it’s a defect then it’s a defect. No point in second guessing.

There you go! That’s what ultimately led me to keeping my genius appt. There’s no way this is considered acceptable when there are plenty of phones out there that are flush with the steel band! It’s black or white in my book! Either all phones have a gap exposing the innards or not!

In my case, I fortunately held onto my IUP graphite phone which was pristine, just in case I could not replace the SB phone or received a phone with the similar issue.

I am using a clear case on my phone. The skin is from Xtreme Skins. They leave no residue. You can apply it wet or dry. I install it wet which works the best as it gives you time to place it properly before it dries.

Didn't you wind up returning the Graphite and keeping the Sierra?

That was a photo of the
SB 1TB (defect) vs SB 512gb (replacement). Also, I decided to keep the graphite and give it to my daughter as an early bday gift.

I like the way Silver looks but the raw stainless is a no go for me. If you breathe on the stainless sides wrong they get micro scratches. While I get it that you can polish them, that is a lot of effort to keep up with throughout the life of the phone. Every time the Silver is removed from a case it gets marks on it. Once Apple gets away from these stupid polished sides I would love to once again get a Silver IPhone.

if you have to look for imperfections with a microscope, you are obsessed with your phone
I see both sides of the argument here...For the prices Apple charges, one expects perfection. However perfection and Apple do not go together. Generally when you start swapping phones you return one issue or another (or even two new issues). What one views theirs as pristine someone would find something wrong with it whether it be something with the screen or cosmetic. But I get it as I have been there before opening up a brand new phone on launch day to find it scratched or some other cosmetic defect. On the flipside, I feel like people go above and beyond looking for issues. These forums are a gift and a curse at the same time. While its a fun place for Apple enthusiasts to come chat about products, it also nitpicks every little flaw possible on a "mass produced" device. Its sort of ridiculous to sit there examining the device under a light over and over....just use the damn thing for what it is. You can spend months worrying about ticky tack crap instead of just enjoying the new phone. This thread is completely overblown in my opinion. Just because you don't have a slight gap near the ear piece that doesn't mean there isn't one somewhere else in the frame (which were common in the 12's) you just don't see it or there wasn't a thread yet to let you know where to go look for it with your flashlight. I would take this issue any day over screen defects or scratches or chips on the stainless. When you go to sell it or trade it in this would have absolutely zero impact on anything.
