You guys got too serious 😂. What I meant was that every phone has gaps along the sides(even Samsungs and google pixels). Some are visible to the naked eye while for some you have to slide in a thin piece of paper to find them. I talked to two engineering teams at Apple, they both said that smaller gaps are part of the design and within the manufacturing tolerances while the gaps where the internal components are visible are considered defective. Every phone since the iPhone 6s has had one. These gaps can be found all along the chassis. Some are near the earpiece while some near the charging port.
What kind of gaps did you mention in your talks with Apple? Just gaps ...or gaps where you can see metal underneath?

I don’t know why you’re equating every gap with the issue in this thread; yes of course there are always gaps of some kind, nobody is fusing the glass and metal in their phones therefore there’s a gap in every phone. But the issue in this thread is a very noticeable gap in a specific place with metal showing through - that’s *not* in every phone and not normal, and it doesn’t help anyone to suggest it is.

Just chiming in here, I returned my 13 Pro Max thinking this was an issue. The replacement phone had the exact same gap, I had this on my 12 Pro Max but did not notice the metal. I read up on it more, every phone will have that "gap" somewhere as a super tight seal between the glass and chassis would result in cracks. Essentially, it is normal.

To those that are saying you paid X amount for a phone that has this gap, unfortunately you are going to be hard pressed to find any premium phone that does not have this issue. I (briefly) tried to switch to the Galaxy Fold 3 in between the iPhone 12 and 13, the Fold 3 had significant light bleed on the front display and a quick google showed that many Samsung users had this issue across their entire line of devices.

I prefer an Apple gap to the Samsung gap where light is actually seeping through the gap, at least with the iPhone I do not notice it unless I look closely. Going to the Apple Store tomorrow to replace one final time (Sierra Blue is rarely in stock lol), and if it the gap is present I will just live with it.

Got both a Pro and Pro Max atm, trying to decide which one to keep. Both have the gap above the ear piece with metal shining through at certain angles in certain lighting. Seems fairly common, and I’d much rarther settle on a uniform display with minimal color shift than trying to hit double jackpot

So you are talking about the gap through which you can see the metal..right?

yep. In my experience with the 12PM and 13PM, it’s always somewhere.

if you’re lucky, the front glass will be pushed all the way up and your gap will be at the bottom or something, where you’d probably never notice it even in the right light. (If there’s a decent-sized gap on either the left or right side, the metal can also be noticeable there.)

if Apple had just painted those pieces of metal behind the screen dark gray or black, no one would be complaining since it would never catch your eye. Sigh.

That’s exactly it- it’s not the actual gap that’s the issue, I’ve had those on every phone and it never bothered me.

Where they got sloppy this year was allowing there to either be a part that goes up that far where you can see the metal. OR like you said, make sure the part is dark enough where it doesn’t stand out at all through the gap.

This is why people are a bit more annoyed I think, not cause of gaps that are always around the frame. Not much you can do at this point. Unless they actually say they are
fixing moving forward, probably not worth the hassle trying to find a perfect one.

To make a long story short: The gap has always been there - only this year it is more visible. So it is NOT a defect and we can go on with our phone- life. Correct?

I’d say never settle. If you don’t like it then say you don’t like it and and as Apple says have “courage” return or exchange. Unless you’re happy.

its on a lot of the phones but not all. my dads doesn't have it above the ear piece. side by side with mine and I can see the metal and see nothing on his. of course he doesn't care though lol

Well going to throw a curveball compared to my previous comment, just swapped my 13 Pro Max back to Sierra Blue and this thing has no gap where I can see metal, and I did a thorough look. The top is perfectly flush compared to the 2 13 PMs I had before.

I had already gone into this thinking I would keep it anyway if it had the gap still, but it's clear now it's just a luck of the draw thing. Either way, I still do not think it's a reason to worry at all.

Correct, it does not hurt water resistance and has been there in the past. With my 11 PM and 12 PM I would clean dust out the gap with a sticky note, both of which were used in water.

It is just a manufacturing margin of error I guess when it comes to how "flush" the display is with the bezel.

I’m in the mindset that i’m going to be exchanging and either I get ‘lucky’ and get no gap, or I get another gap but for what it’s worth a phone with a brand new battery too.

No way to lose really, and how much the gap does or doesn’t bother you is entirely up to each person, but it’s pretty surely not diminishing to the quality of the water resistance as that seems to be the general idea.

Would this be classified as a defect where I would be able to get a replacement? I have already passed my two weeks so I’m not exactly sure if I have leverage in a replacement.

Hello,

I just received my iPhone 13 Pro Max today and it’s seems like there is a gap between the glass screen and the metal body and I can see a bit of the silver internal components. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I return? I am worried about any or moisture or dust getting in there.
