I usually upgrade my iPhone every year, but I think I’m going to run my iPhone 13 Pro Max into the ground. I hate to use the f-word, but there are a few features that will make these models exceptionally nice and, in some cases, truly “future-proof.”
  • Finally a 120hz display
  • WiFi 6E, the X60 modem, and possibly even Bluetooth 5.2
  • Huge batteries (relatively speaking)
I think these Pro models are going to be really nice, well-rounded phones that have the potential to last a very long time. Next year’s periscope lens is really going to tempt me because it seems super useful, but I think I’ll be able to do without it. I’ve been waiting for a model worth holding on to and this seems to be it. Would be interested to hear you guys’ thoughts on this.

I say the same thing every year “I will keep my new iPhone for 3 years, why do I keep upgrading”. Launch day arrives and I find myself sitting on my MacBook Pro ordering 🙈, I am very happy with my iPhone 12 Pro Max but at this point and after 14 years of owning an iPhone why should I fight the urge 🤣

As long as they don’t use the same crappy batteries they used in the 12 series. The fast wear on these is insane. There are some of us who are already close to the 80% mark (fortunately not me, I’m at 93%, but that’s still not great for a device not even a year old).

I agree with you virtually 100%. I have upgraded every year since my first iPhone (the 4). I believe this year, especially the Pro Max if it has the rumored 4300+ mAh battery, 120Hz screen and X60 modem will be a device that easily checks the hardware boxes for the next few years. I prefer the regular Pro sizes, but with a battery jump that big I would definitely lean towards the Max. Currently have my toes in the waters of Android and Windows, but I’m pretty positive I’ll be back come pre-order Friday.

Now, if 2022 is the year of no notch, I would be slightly tempted. The hole punch display on my Pixel 4a5G just looks more pleasing. Full screen content looks better too (to me). However, I’ve lived with the notch all these years. I could put up with it a bit longer if this coming iPhone hits the above marks.

IMO the X60 modem is the first 5G modem actually worthy of commercial use. The ability to use multiple bands of 5G at once seems like a critical feature to me and I’m surprised Apple shipped 5G phones without that ability.

Hm, I haven’t heard about any battery issues. I got my 12 Pro Max on launch day and the battery health is still at 100%. This is probably because I have a shortcut automation that makes an alarm go off when the battery rises above 75%, and then I unplug it. You may know this already but charging lithium ion batteries up to (at or near) 100% greatly accelerates their degradation. Btw, I always fast charge. Many people seem to think that fast charging is horrible for batteries but the impact is actually quite negligible, at least at the maximum wattage of around 20 watts for iPhones.

My launch iPhone 7 JB 128GB is still going strong. It’s almost 5 years old. Hmm. It’s been an excellent phone to hold on to. I don’t get why everyone is so wasteful upgrading every year or two. I’m making sure I get my $749 out of this thing and I think I have!!! I do admit I REALLY want 120hz but if it’s only on the bigger phones I might have to wait. A mini with 120hz is what I’m waiting for. Might be awhile or never!!

Not worth upgrading from a 12 pro max.

120hz is useless on a small display.

wifi is already fast enough, 5G is a gimmick so they can sell more phones, no need for it on mobile phones.

Always nice to have a bigger battery, my 12 pro max is good enough when it comes to battery life.

I’ll be keeping my 12 pro max for another year, unless apple has some surprises in store for us.

Wait, what? Why would 120hz be useless on a small display? Everyone I know who’s ever upgraded from a 60hz Android phone to a 120hz Android phone has found the difference to be very noticeable and loved it.

The benefits of WiFi 6 and WiFi 6E have very little to do with speed.

I’m not paying a full $1,000+ every year. I’ve consistently been able to fetch $800 for my previous iPhone on eBay, making the yearly upgrade cycle much less expensive than it appears. It’s definitely still more expensive to upgrade every year, but I find it to be worth it. Just a personal choice/opinion really

iPhones don’t need 120hz they’re smooth enough with 60hz and don’t lag.

Android phones on the other hand need 120hz and yet they still lag. 🤦‍♂️

I unplug it when it gets to 80% and have that feature to stop charging at 80% turned on in settings. I can tell you though that I’ve used smartphones since 2006 when I upgraded my Sidekick II to a PPC-6700 and I’ve never had a battery fail despite what is considered poor charging practices now.

As for the battery issues, there are a few threads like this one about it around here, seems to be affecting a number of us.

Try scrolling a webpage on a 120hz phone and go back to you iPhone. It’s a noticeable quality of life improvement but I agree that it’s not worth buying a new phone for.

With that said, I disagree about 5G. Most new network deployments will not be LTE which means new coverage will be 5G-only or DSS at best. LTE is congested in a lot of areas and 5G isn’t just about speed but capacity and latency. Anybody who is shopping for a new phone and isn’t making sure it has 5G is doing themselves a disservice long term.

Android needs 120hz to make up for lag in scrolling you will hardly noticed in iOS. I have iPad Air 60hz and iPad Pro with 120hz on a big screen I don't notice much. It's smoother but it's not night and day.

Would be nice if there was an automation to turn off charging at a specified level without having to unplug. I believe there is an app for this purpose on the Mac.

Couldn't care less about 120 hz in a small screen. If you use them next to each other, sure you'll notice a difference but then you'll get used to it fairly quick and forget about it one way or the other - I'll rather take the savings in Battery Life if I can turn it off.

60hz is entirely fine by me. I do think I'll end up getting the iPhone 13 Pro Max after missing the 12 Pro Max, but realistically any recent phone can hold up for a few years....

BTW OP, glad you're able to maintain the Battery Health at 100%, but setting an alarm to take care of your phone isn't a bit too much? I like to just plug in the phone at night to charge, take it off in the morning, and rinse and repeat - waking up in the middle of the night because the phone has reached the optimal charge % seems overkill for me. My tools need to work for me, I don't work for my tools.
