As long as they don’t use the same crappy batteries they used in the 12 series. The fast wear on these is insane. There are some of us who are already close to the 80% mark (fortunately not me, I’m at 93%, but that’s still not great for a device not even a year old).

Really? My launch day iPhone X is at 90%. Only reason why I’m even replacing it is because the screen is cracked and it’s messing with the Face ID.

Yeah my 2 year old, charged 2-3 times a day because the battery life was terrible XS Max was at 85% when I traded it in last year and this 12 Pro Max is at 93% despite only getting a charge once a day usually and I use the 80% optimized battery charging feature on my 12 Pro Max which I didn’t do on the XS Max and I’ve switched from a 30W rapid charger on the XS Max to my 12W iPad charger now.

I usually upgrade my iPhone every year, but I think I’m going to run my iPhone 13 Pro Max into the ground. I hate to use the f-word, but there are a few features that will make these models exceptionally nice and, in some cases, truly “future-proof.”
  • Finally a 120hz display
  • WiFi 6E, the X60 modem, and possibly even Bluetooth 5.2
  • Huge batteries (relatively speaking)
I think these Pro models are going to be really nice, well-rounded phones that have the potential to last a very long time. Next year’s periscope lens is really going to tempt me because it seems super useful, but I think I’ll be able to do without it. I’ve been waiting for a model worth holding on to and this seems to be it. Would be interested to hear you guys’ thoughts on this.
I suspect I might actually take a different tack: run my 12 mini into the ground -or- jump to the next Pixel as soon as it comes out, and then immediately root it.

I’m finding the new direction of the Apple ecosystem to be a bit stifling. I wonder how hard it will be to change my habits once I no longer have access to Apple Music, Watch and the Apple Pay… but I think it’s worth it to vote with my wallet.

As someone who's very sensitive to frame rate drops, I can tell you they definitely lag.
Yep, I remember when the S20 Ultra came out, using one at a retail store, started lagging straight away, checked settings to make sure 120hz was on which it was, even 500hz won’t help android phones from lagging.

If it ain’t a iPhone, it ain’t a iPhone 👌

You misunderstood.

The iPhone, does in fact, lag at 60hz. A 120hz display is needed.

You’re also not taking into account how Apple’s implementation of 120hz will be vs Android, either.

The iPad is a wonderful display with Promotion.

Couldn't care less about 120 hz in a small screen. If you use them next to each other, sure you'll notice a difference but then you'll get used to it fairly quick and forget about it one way or the other - I'll rather take the savings in Battery Life if I can turn it off.

60hz is entirely fine by me. I do think I'll end up getting the iPhone 13 Pro Max after missing the 12 Pro Max, but realistically any recent phone can hold up for a few years....

BTW OP, glad you're able to maintain the Battery Health at 100%, but setting an alarm to take care of your phone isn't a bit too much? I like to just plug in the phone at night to charge, take it off in the morning, and rinse and repeat - waking up in the middle of the night because the phone has reached the optimal charge % seems overkill for me. My tools need to work for me, I don't work for my tools.
This is actually super easy for me and never involves waking up in the middle of the night. I sit at my desk most of the day and also charge my phone there. I just plug in the phone, go about my business, then eventually hear a little chime and stop the alarm and unplug the phone.

iPhones don’t need 120hz they’re smooth enough with 60hz and don’t lag.

Android phones on the other hand need 120hz and yet they still lag. 🤦‍♂️
It seems that you are conflating refresh rate with “lag.” They are not the same thing, and are not inherently connected. Of course iPhones don’t “need“ it, but it would still be very noticeable and very nice. If iPhones “don’t lag“ (which is true), then 120hz will be even more beneficial as the phone can keep up with the high refresh rate.

Yep. Case in point, Tapatalk just did it while scrolling.

No device is immune to lag issues because the processors use variable clock speeds depending on the load applied to them. If anything lag will continue to get worse because older ARM chips used a single core type, modern ones use two core types for high and low power tasks, and now there are chips like Snapdragon 888 that actually use three core types, with the load distributed based on performance algorithms and the CPU governor in use.

Honestly not seeing the lag you’re speaking about, there was a slight stutter when opening apps, when the 12 series got released, that got fixed with a software
(iOS 14.5)

Not seeing any lag or stutter on my 12 pro max, maybe you have a faulty phone. 🤔

Honestly you’ll notice it for the first few seconds and then you won’t even realize it’s there.

I lease mine now and Every year get a new one. For 4 years i had a 7+ because it was that good.... Until the 12 Pro max. My GF has my 7+ after i changed the screen and battery. I will give her my Old 12 Pro Max which should make all her friends jealous in Thailand.

I thought the 11 series would be the ones to last a long time because of the focus on battery life and the speed, but my battery health is already at 87% and my screen is covered in scratches...

Also, My 4G service is terrible and slow. Looking forward to not really 5G connectivity, just better modems in general (I'll probably get a 12 series after they come down in price used).

Sounds like the 13 will have better 5G bands? That might be very noticeable in a few years...to the OP's point.

It's been there since iOS 8. LOL.

Just because YOU don't see it, doesn't mean others who can perceive it can't, either. Consider yourself lucky for not being able to see it. It drives me nuts.

Will be a 13 Mini or 13 Pro. Love the size of the Mini, but the zoom lens, better battery life, and presumably 120Hz display may be worth splurging for. I don't keep my phones for more than 2 years, but I feel like every year isn't worht the cost any more, but 2 years brings noticeable improvements to both cameras and speed. The 12 lineup seemed to iterative from the 11 Pro, but the 13 Pro seems to be a nice upgrade over the 11 Pro.

13 won’t have better bands but will have better band aggregation capabilities that will definitely extend the useful life.

Would be nice if there was an automation to turn off charging at a specified level without having to unplug. I believe there is an app for this purpose on the Mac.
I use this…Settings>Battery>Battery Health…Optimised Battery Charging.

Come back in 2-3 years and tell me if you still this way…

Doesn’t this still charge past 80%? I have this turned on, but the wording makes it sound like it tries to determine when you start to use the phone each day and charges based on that.

Yes it does still charge past 80%. It seems to stop for random amounts of time but often it just goes right on past 80% for me.

I ususually upgraded iphone everytime the 2nd iteration of the existing modell came out.
Since iphone 4, but i skipped iphone 12 pro, have 11pro, and dont feel sorry for that wasnt hugely diffrent.

We will see what Iphone 13pro brings but i could easly keep using 11pro for at least 2more year

Heck still using my Iphone 6 non "s" at work :)

Not worth upgrading from a 12 pro max.

120hz is useless on a small display.

wifi is already fast enough, 5G is a gimmick so they can sell more phones, no need for it on mobile phones.

Always nice to have a bigger battery, my 12 pro max is good enough when it comes to battery life.

I’ll be keeping my 12 pro max for another year, unless apple has some surprises in store for us.
Absolutely bang on.....

120Hz is nice, but hardly essential and not a deal breaker...

My WiFi6 already transmits at speeds faster than my ISP (600Mbps async), and 5G mobile is amazing (I get 1.2Gbps), but the reality is it's useless since nothing needs those transfer speeds. I can't even hotspot it to my laptop and get the crazy download speeds since the WiFi does not support it, and cable transfer speeds are limited to 400Mbps (USB2 standard speeds on lightning).

I'll also add my 12 Pro lasts the entire day under load. I am an avid road cyclist, and I use my phone to allow my wife to track my progress. It connects to my Garmin HU by BT, and continually transmits (mostly in real-time), for over 6 hours non-stop. The battery usually takes a 30% hit.

I'll be keeping my 12 Pro for 3 years.....

Replying to the OP, I have to say that, if this year’s iPhone had Touch ID, that would definitely the case. However, I am afraid this won’t be the case. Anyways this years iPhone will be the last compact flagship smartphone, so I will probably feel forced to stick with it for the foreseeable future.
