120hz likely the obvious update, but I strongly disagree with the common belief here that battery life will be improved. The new screens will suck up any battery performance gains that an A15 chip would bring and likely make the battery life worse than iPhone 12.

aren’t you forgetting next year iPhones are getting a LPTO oled screen, way more power efficient than the current oled screens.

I wonder what the iPhone 38 and iPhone 43 will be like. Seriously, who cares! The 12 has literally only just been announced!

iPhone 12S:
- camera improvements
- base model jumps to 128GB
- A15, 6GB RAM
- LIDAR

iPhone 12S Pro exclusive features:
- 120hz ProMotion display
- A15, 8GB RAM

Pro motion with LTPO is pretty much locked in

guessing Touch ID under the display and no port.

that seems to be the main pull for next years models along with of course improved cameras. For many pro motion and Touch ID under display will be enough to upgrade. Magsafe will be seen as the main charging standard as well i imagine.

I think the only real rumor has been about some major camera updates.

ProMotion and TouchID are just logical speculation. Sounds like Apple just barely missed it when it comes to ProMotion on the 12 series, so I assume they’ll be ready next year. Given how long it takes to develop iPhone hardware, I’m not surprised by the lack of TouchID, but given that the tech is ready and how much demand there is for it (even before COVID), I thinks it’s purely philosophical if TouchID is withheld.

iPhone 12S (2021)
  • A15
  • 6GB Ram
  • 128GB base storage or a $50 price cut
  • Camera improvements
  • New colors
iPhone 12S Pro (2021)
  • A15
  • 6GB Ram
  • 120Hz ProMotion Display (Pro feature)
  • Camera improvements (including the bigger sensor from the 12 Pro Max)
  • New color to replace the Pacific Blue
That's it. Light "S" year to improve the profit margins.

I think that we'll be led to believe for months by rumors that the Touch ID under the screen is coming for the 2021 iPhone similar to how everyone thought ProMotion display was coming this year. Then, about a month before the 12S release, there will be a report of technical or yield issues, and that the feature will be pushed to the 2022 iPhone. I am certain of this. I will not believe the excuse for it being pushed though, same way I don't believe they really meant to have ProMotion with the 2020 iPhones. Apple is purposely holding on these "big" features as it is all they have going for them. The main selling points in 2020 are redesign and 5G, in 2021 it will be ProMotion, and in 2022 it will be Touch ID under the screen and potentially no ports on the Pro.

$500 says it’ll be the fastest and most powerful iPhone ever made.

and they are so exited about it and to show us... 🤣
Have followed the Apple „world“ only for 4 years and already can repeat their presentations 🙃

-"Fastest ever chip" apple a15
- 120 hz/pro motion on the pro models.
- Reduced notch.
- Improved megapixel count in the cameras. I think next year will be a big upgrade for the hardwear of iphone cameras.
- Largely increased battery capacity. Apple didn't mention battery at all this year, I think next year they will increase the thickness slightly and improve battery life.
-Improved 5g.
-MAYBE no lightning port. But only on the 13 pro-max ("Halo model"). Will possibly receive a magsafe charger in the box. I don't believe they will go no lightning port on all models, and early rumours/leaks have suggested apple only plan it for their most expensive model.
-We will keep the 5.4 inch/6.1 inch/6.1 inch pro/6.7 inch pro form factors.
-MAYBE 1440p displays, probably on the pro models.
-Some sort of upgrade to the lidar sensors.

All I've got right now.
i dont know about the battery but i think we will see 90% of the features you wrote, 120hz LTPO display is already confirmed by Ross Young (who said way back in July that 120hz is not coming this year because of some drivers missing), reduced notch confirmed too, increase of megapixels also (they already tested a 64mpx sensor for this year but they couldnt achieve quality they wanted so they scrapped it for this year) also a better zoom is coming apparently

I don’t see Apple increasing megapixel counts on the cameras, especially since they just introduced a new 12 megapixel sensor in the pro max with larger pixels. I think the camera updates will be all phones get the larger sensor (except maybe the Mini because it literally doesn’t fit, that might get a custom sensor that is as big as they can go in that form factor), the regular sized Pro gets the 65mm telephoto lens and sensor shift on the wide angle lens, the non-Pros retain OIS. The max will get new ultra wide and telephoto sensors, not as big as the wide camera sensor but still better than what we have now. The alternative would be all the phones get new sensors and the max gets a fourth camera at an actual 5x focal length.

The pros will get 120hz screens. I hope TouchID finally returns, either under the screen or on the power button. I’d love to see options to use either TouchID or FaceID and the option to use both in tandem for added security. I’d also like to see Apple find a way to address masks with FaceID. If anyone can figure a way around that problem, it’s Apple.

5G will be improved, perhaps enough that they don’t have to switch back and forth between that and LTE. Between that and 120hz screens though, any battery gains will be invisible and seen as the phones retaining the same battery estimates as the 12, or slightly worse.

I’d love to see feature parity between the pros return personally. The A15 should be a monster chip. I suspect RAM will remain the same, maybe the non-pro models will get the bump to 6 GB as they will get the inevitable feature trickle down that tends to happen, such as Dolby Vision at 60 FPS and the ability to handle ProRAW.

I’m sure Apple will still have some surprises for us. I hope it’s mainly a focus on improving much of what they’ve introduced this year as I find the s models to generally have the best longevity. I got a 12 this year but I can’t see it being a long term phone.

i think that the higher mpx count will make sense on the telephoto camera, the main sensor will remain the same i guess

I suspect we’ll see a larger sensor with larger pixels for the telephoto before we see a megapixel bump. Larger pixels can collect more light, which is of vast importance for the telephoto lens because it has the worst light collecting abilities of all the lenses (especially if they switch the regular pro to the f2.2 65mm lens). Even if they made the sensor bigger and added megapixels, the pixels would have less light collecting ability.

I think it's time they drop the number from next year surely.
They'll never drop the number. Just calling it "iPhone" every year will confuse people. "I'm replacing my iPhone pro max, with a pro max" doesn't make sense, you need something to qualify which model you're talking about. At best they'll go the Samsung route an add the year to it, calling it iPhone 2021 or iPhone 21.

iPhone could go with just the model year like the Mac computers.
iPhone 19 .. iPhone 43.. seem ridiculous.
But well before then we will probably have some new device that will replace hand held smartphones.

Yeah that's what I was referring to with my Samsung comparison. This year was the S20, next year is rumoured to be S21. I think next year will likely be 12s for apple, and then they'll retire that scheme and go with a yearly naming convention. They're going to probably want to avoid 13 for western markets, 14 for eastern. Even if they don't, I agree that we probably won't be using smart phones by the time they naturally get to a number like 19 assuming we have the odd S year.

Rumors say Apple will skip numbers 13 (bad) and 14 (bad) and name it “iPhone XV”

While silly, you may have a point, on a global scale. It's exactly why there is no 9, they will find a way to fluff around it. Maybe a 12S. There was no 9 for Windows either. Maybe it will be the iPhone Air and Air2, before going to iPhone 15.
