I've never been less excited about an iPhone 5 months out that I am now. The pill/hole punch combo is an absolute eye sore. Apple should have just made the combo an elongated pill instead out two different things. Also, the camera housing is starting to get too damn big, IMO. They need to take a page out of Samsung and Google's playbook and try something different from the 3 burner stove approach that is currently in it's 3rd iteration. Apple seems stuck in cycle on un-innovative regurgitation (see iPhone SE) and the future (some companies are already there with foldable). Apple's staleness has a way of making techies like wanting itch my Android fetish.

I agree with a couple of your points and really don't see the necessity to get rid of the notch just for a pill/hole punch alternative. I think they should either do what you said with just a singlar pill cutout or leave the notch as is until it can be removed completely. Removing the camera hump (like the S22 Ultra design) would make for a much better looking device as well as avoiding to constantly having to have a case that has a larger/thicker design around the hump to protect it from damage.

I’d have kept the notch as is with the 13 as I reckon we are all used to it by now and it isn’t exactly an eyesore, at least in my opinion. I don’t mind the camera hump too much but would have liked to have seen the a design with a flat back like in the early leaks.

Oh well, there’s always next year :D

The pill-hole is only a transition. It’s not the end game (full screen display). While they probably have the tech already to make a FSD, they’re going to milk variations the notch metaphor for a good long time.
Apple is into iPhone for the long haul. Any advancements will be incremental- so they have something left for future models.

I think it would make more sense to wait until you actually see the released phone, instead of complaining about rumors as if they were true in every respect.

There hasn’t been a phone released in the last few years where we didn’t know everything about it beforehand. To many good leakers with good intel out there.

Look at the record breaking quarter. So Apple is probably doing something right.

My friend who is working for Samsung Display in Vietnam confirmed that they are testing in huge volume of pill-and-hole screen. This will be the final choice for iPhone 14 series (as his experience).

Yes, recent rumours about pill-and-hole screen are true, but the thickness of bezel of the Pro is the same as regular model and 13 series. My friend said that it looks so weird and annoying, for the notch screen the view is continuous, we know where the border of the screen is while in pill-and-hole screen the view is discontinued and distracted sometimes.

The pill-and-hole, in actual, will bigger than render photos we see on the internet.

Never been a fan of the notch but I agree, the pill hole is worse than the notch. Which itself is an achievement only Apple could make.

Also agree about the camera array design - screams lazy design. The Pixel 6 phones look great in comparison.

I think the notch is fine especially since it's gotten smaller. the new design is just silly. I mean just make it one big pill shape instead of two different things.

I understand we all have our aesthetic preferences, but I will never understand why people get so heated about these designs that they'll even consider "jumping ship" and going to Android phones because of it. I personally think the notch looks better than the "pill" but it's of no real consequence to me as long as the phone works as designed.

The Pixel 6 camera bar looks more attractive than any iPhone camera module.

There are only 17 posts in this thread (including this one), and no one has even remotely mentioned anything about jumping ship and “going to Android phones.”

Stop freaking out, this is a discussion about design. No need to go all defence force.

Because of the track record of leaks that has come out is very good and we already know a lot of what to expect and frankly we expect more from Apple than a 3rd cycle of the same stuff.
We do? Have you checked your notes on how long the iPhone 6 design aesthetic stuck around?

My iPhone 14 concern is not even related to having a notch or pill... It's the damn fact that rumors are saying that only the Pro models will have a processor upgrade. I would feel kicked in the nuts buying an iPhone 14 that sports the very same processor from iPhone 13... Am I paying just for a camera upgrade?

I’m still waiting for the Pro models to rock a brushed stainless steel chassis as well as a true matte black iPhone 14 Pro leaks.
THIS. The glossy sides actually devalue the Pro models imo. They appear nice in promos and when you first take it outta the box, but they soon smudge up and look a mess. The matte finish feels better in the hand too.

Glad that I’m not the only one! It’s not like it’s an impossible task. Apple did it to their 4/4S models from back in the day. I hope they come around their senses and at least do it on their silver models. I’ll gladly take it.

I wouldn't mind the LOOK from the old 4/4S years. I always found it to be a really nice finish. The problem was how easily it got marked up. I had a microfiber-lined case that put blemishes all up and down the antenna bands. If they used a bead blasted finish like that again, I would hope they use better tech to keep it from turning black over time.

re-read the last line of OP... I'll admit his sentence is a grammatical nightmare, but if I squint then I get the gist.

look at all the product engineers, as far as optimising profit, the announced product is perfect.

Offset some of the chip surplus you have because you ordered in bulk to get priority allocation in the supply constrained world of 2021.

Get some mileage out off the old screen manufacture by passing down the 13 pro screen to the 14 lineup.

Ramp up production for the rest

I wasn't only referring to things said in this thread, but the OP did indeed say:

Apple's staleness has a way of making techies like wanting itch my Android fetish.

As for:

You have an odd definition of "freaking out" and "defensive" (at least I'm guessing that's what "go all defence force" means?). I simply acknowledged we all have different design preferences but also stated I don't get people who place so much emphasis on design details that they become more important than function. Besides, no matter what Apple does in terms of design, they will never fully please everyone.
