So from the leaks the new iPhone is limited due to its CPU still on 5nm because TSMC isn’t ready. A15 to A16 won’t yield any day to day benefits other than synthetic benchmarks. Even if they switch to USB-C waiting a year to the iPhone 15 and a new 3nm die shrink and LPDDR5 RAM. Seems like a plan.

Anyone definitely getting the iPhone 14 and Pro or Max ?

Definitely getting a 14 Pro or Pro Max!
My 13 Pro is already sold to my sister, she can't wait to upgrade from her 7... ;)

Of course I am not getting it because of the CPU or the A15 is to slow. Just looking forward to camera improvements and some kind of "different" look after some years with the notch.

Why do people feel the need to get the next thing without ever evaluating if they need it first...

the 14? ofc not, you better get the iphone 13, same design, same SoC, same camera
but the pro models can be a big hit...the camera will be improved, the display also, the SoC, even if its 5nm we saw the difference between A14 and A15

No matter what happens. What it is. I will be upgrading and getting the new iPhone 14 Pro Max 1+TB. Been upgrading proudly since 2008 and never skipped a year. This year is will be no different :). Honestly, I'm debating If I should order 2 iPhones for myself this year, hahah!

It's a beautiful product and you should upgrade as soon as it gets announced :)

It's never definitely a skip year. People have different needs and budgets, and people with an older iPhone will gladly upgrade to the upcoming iPhone 14 no matter how many new features it will get over the previous one. And there are always people that will systematically get the newest iPhone. Maybe this is a skip year for you, and that's fine, but I'm sure the 14 will sell as well as the 13 (which was also a relatively incremental upgrade).

Truth is, iPhone is a mature product, and the spectacular year on year improvements will be far less frequent. Too often on MR forums, there are people who thinks that Apple is making a new product specifically for the people who owned the previous generation. They aim for a way more broader audience than that.

Also, I agree that you should wait for the official introduction before jumping to conclusions. And don't put too much hope in the iPhone 15 rumors, there is still plenty of time for them to change.

I upgrade on a cadence (every other year). I never *need* it, but the goal is to upgrade BEFORE I need it, and while the old phone still has significant value.

Wear & tear on phones, especially on battery life & connectors, is high regardless of price point and I rely on my phone to do my job.

The fact that TSMC is not ready for 3nm is a bummer, but I don't think upgrading an iPhone based on the device speed is relevant anymore. iPhones are so fast these days, they won't ever slow down. My (vacations) iPhone 6S still holds very very well against iOS 15.

You have a need then, your job requires no failure on connectors and longest battery life.

What chips do ya'll think will go in the 15's?

An 16 which they will call it an M1, (for marketing purposes) with 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM people will go crazy but it’s an A16 on a 5nm die from last year. Thanks to the extra cache on chip and faster Ram it might be slightly faster than the A15.
There’s nothing tangible unless full fledged USB-C Thunderbolt 4 at 40Gbps Bandwidth and 3nm die shrink. We already have Fast charging and 120hz Promotion OLED

I will be buying two phones. This will be a forced upgrade to iPhone 14 Pro Max 1 TB. My wife and I each have iPhone 6s Plus and since the upcoming iOS 16 won’t support our phones, we need to do the upgrade. Even though it is a write off for business, we don’t believe in upgrading each year. However, it makes us happy you all are upgrading often and trying to support our AAPL stock (we have own the stock since 1998, bought at less than $13) and have enough share we could have retired on it many years ago….

LOL love that idea!

I’m sure we will hear Tim Apple proclaim all of the improvements in Siri today at the WWDC. I don’t know how anybody at Apple can talk with a straight face about it.
Don’t get me started from the X googlr who works at Apple for last five years lied for Siri ain’t doing nothing. Just please don’t get me started 😂

Exactly. A 'skip year' is any year when you don't have any particularly overwhelming reason to want or need a new phone. A 'buy year' is when your old phone is too slow or your battery has died or the screen size isn't working for you, or anything else that is a worthwhile reason for upgrading.

If you're just mindlessly buying new iPhones each year and are getting annoyed because Apple aren't providing incentive enough to do so: sorry, but you're the one in the wrong.

Agree that it should always a needs-based decision, and the need is not always about latest features. This year I'm going to upgrade to a 14PM and pass my 13PM to my son in college who's having some issues & damage to the XR he's been on for 3 or 4 years.
