A temporary fix for me (while waiting for the fix) is turning off apple car play completely and using the cars default bluetooth handsfree / phone system for the iPhone 14 pro... it works fine as long as calls are not via apple car play
Been doing that but I use Waze most of the time for traffic updates and route changes. Not ideal

Evidence of an upcoming iOS 16.0.3 software update has shown up in MacRumors analytics logs, which have been a reliable indicator in the past.

There are several remaining iOS 16 bugs that iOS 16.0.3 would hopefully address, including an issue with low volume during CarPlay phone calls placed with an iPhone 14 Pro, display flickering on some iPhone models when brightness is set low, a string of text that can crash the Mail app, an error when attempting to edit Cinematic Mode videos shot on an iPhone in Final Cut Pro and iMovie on the Mac, and more.

So, my wife just got her new 14 pro max. Exactly the same. Bit disappointing to say the least.

New iPhone 14 pro. Carplay phone calls are spotty if not un-useable with Mercedes. Took it into the dealer. They replaced the mic and updated the Mercedes software. The connection was mildly better but even the service tech said he could not solve the problem completely. We are awaiting the apple iphone update.

Same with 14 Pro Max on 16.0.2. This is a problem. Don't know if it actually gets read but I sent this to Apple's Bug Report page:

Please make an announcement as to when this CarPlay mic issue will be resolved. This is no small thing, it's directly impacting safety while driving... as people keep being told the voice is too low, it's natural to handle the phone while driving to try and figure it out. THIS IS SERIOUS. Own up to the developer testing mistake and make an announcement so us 14 devotees are well-informed.
And please get this fixed ASAP. Thank you.

Here's a post I just dropped in the main thread... it's not totally fixed, at least from my testing:

Not sure if this was mentioned, but I called a friend that I talk with often on CarPlay, specifically to test after the 16.0.3 update, she said the sound quality is improved, but the volume is only a little better. By that she said she normally put me at half volume on her iPhone (using FaceTime Audio btw) when I was on iPhone 11 Pro Max, and once on iPhone 14 Pro Max of course it was almost a whisper as we all know, but NOW after 16.0.3 she said it's better than it was, but she's got me up to 75-80% to hear me the same way. I could hear her fine at the same car volume I run. I trust her assessment as she works with video and audio editing on her MacBook Pro in her home studio, so she has half a clue. So it's not a complete fix on the mic side. I'm posting this to Apple next.

My wife's 14 Pro has the same issue. I can't hear her at all when she calls me via her car. Hopefully this gets fixed quick.

So far so good with 16.0.3. I made a phone call and the person in the other end said it sounded better.

Ok, this will be a good test: have her update to 16.0.3 and then have her call you and evaluate how it sounds. I’m told mines better but still a bit low compared to my last iPhone. You are used to how she sounds so this will be a good test.

New iPhone 14 Pro, running iOS 16.0.1 seems to have an issue with the microphone sensitivity being set too low. The same issue happening with another iPhone 14 Pro 16.0.1 owner as well (seems to be a hardware/software function of the iPhone 14 Pro??). When making a call in CarPlay the person on the other end is unable to hear me well. Marked difference from previous phone (iPhone 12 Pro) with iOS 16 before upgrading to iPhone 14 Pro and definitely a pretty major problem, cannot make effective CarPlay phone calls.

Anyone else having this issue?
also happening with my Iphone 13, callers claiming they cant hear me ? but only on some calls?

iPhone 13 Pro - same issue with 16.0.3 - it looks that new update works only with iPhone 14 series
Problem reported on https://www.apple.com/feedback/
I tried iOS 16.1 public beta 5 and my wife told me that she can hear me better but still not good. She told that if she will be outdoor or in public transport she will not hear me.
