You're right. I realized it when the notification popped up when the update was finished. Was the same patch pushed out to iPhone 13 and earlier?
No. This update was just for iPhone 14 models. This was a day one update for new phones, which had an earlier version of iOS 16 than the one we all updated to earlier.

The dynamic island is so much bigger than I was expecting. It seems taller than my old notch was not including how low it is on the screen. Like, even if it was butt all the way to the top of the screen it seems like it might steal more screen real estate and giving a couple millimeters of display above it means the bottom of the notch-like-island-area is much much lower than I was ready for.

(This is just a first impression though)

Interesting that so many folks are getting that impression. In actuality, “The Island” (in its default state) gains a significant amount of screen real estate.

I can confirm that my iP14 PM purchased from Apple using T-Mobile financing is unlocked (and I’m using a Verizon line on another eSim successfully).

Thank you that’s really helpful. Good to know there’s still that benefit going through Apple……

If I’m understanding that graphic correctly, the island is taller than the old notch, ya? We gain more real estate to the sides but the height of the island is taller than the old notch and would still be taller even if it was all the way at the top as a notch instead of an island, ya?

The height of the red (lost) is taller than the height of the green (gained) in the overlay.

That little sliver of pixels between the pill and the bezel could be filled in with a software update for landscape content watching only, I suppose.

You’re correct. On the 13 series, the notch was between 5.72 and 5.96mm tall depending on model. The island is approx. 6.59mm in height (and placed lower).

Right. If they didn’t detach it and place it lower then it would be a notch again. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The focus isn’t what the cut out is. It’s the functionality behind it. You are making conversation about it like it’s just an obstruction and nothing else. You’re separating the hardware and software when it is an integration. And if you’re not doing that then what’s your point?

I just got mine today. Love everything about it, but I do feel like the top of my screen is a little more yellow than the bottom. Unless I’m being paranoid

Someone comes along with the ever clever “yellowgate” in 3, 2, 1… 😂

It seems like this plagues every phone release. My current phone is a Note 20 Ultra and it has tint inconsistencies. One would think that they would have fixed this kind of thing by now. It’s definitely not just Apple devices.

While I really appreciate this. seems like a lot of mental cycles for something that is likely temporary and will being improved anyway. This will keep evolving, as its utility gets better and better with developer/app adoption. and perhaps even additional features if/when Apple adds live pixels in the area.

Maybe not time to dive too deep into this until we see more of this feature growing into maturity.

Any comment on the speakers? Are they the same level as the 13 series or better/louder?

Update: after watching this video it seems the speakers are improved on the iPhone 14 pro. Nice

I am very satisfied with the 14 pro max ( silver is awesome). I am doubting on if I will upgrade next year. The camera, dynamic island, screen, refresh rate, the form factor and the better battery are great.

As of now, the only major features I would want in an iPhone are USB-C, Touch ID under the screen, and maybe 8K video.

But even then I am very content with this phone and wouldn’t mind holding on to it until the iPhone 17 launches in like 2025.

Yeah but if the camera gets a periscope 10x optical zoom lens… would you bite for next year? Also increased battery from 3nm process?

For all those asking the island definitely sit lower than the notch from last year. But you do gain a lot of screen real estate especially compared to the notch and the iPhone 12 and 13 non pro. That’s all the island adds functionality. It has more space.

For those worrying about videos for 16 x 9 videos the island does not cut in to the image. For anything wider, it will.
