Surely not having to plug cables into your phone is a good thing? If you want to check something on your phone whilst it's charging you're restricted by the length of the cable. If it's wirelessly charged you can just pick it up off the charging plate?

I wonder how many more years we gotta wait for true wireless charging.... (as in having the charger on the desk or somewhere in the car... and charge the phone that's still in my pocket) :( I really don't consider today's "wireless" charging all that convenient if I still have to put the phone in physical contact with the charger.(even if it's just putting it on top of the "wireless" charger)

Look what just happened with the backlash around 5G and “the microwaves slowly killing us”. Getting 50% of the population on board with true wireless charging is going be a battle I’m not sure is worth it.

don't tell those people that engineers are already working on 6G technology!!!??? (6G is supposed to be 1,000 times faster than 5G... so our brains are going to get fried for sure!)

You can do that already. Not having a charging port would be awful.

I don't really think having no charging port is that bad, as long as the charging time is under an hour or an hour and half?

Now.. having no way to transfer data using an actual cable will be bad... the Lightning port is already notoriously slow.... having no Lightning port will make data transfer a horrible experience.

“There’s not much more they can do in the future” actually means “I can’t imagine the things they’ll do in the future”
It also means "I'm going to ignore all the things missing in the present"

- USB-C unlocks a whole world of accessories/workflows
- Larger screen with no unique large screen features
- Center Stage
- Satellite connectivity feature
- Always On display
- Reverse charging
- Pencil support

As much as I love the iPhone 13 Pro, this gen can be considered a disappointment because it still is missing many current technology features. So why declare it (or anything tech) to be anything close to a final-form product?

The ultimate upgrade is when you no longer need a laptop or desktop computer. You simply plug your phone into a dock and it is your primary computing device.

This is my dream list. I would certainly upgrade from my 13pro if all of those features were offered on the 14

Using type-c will cut off all apple unique cable income, I dont see this will happen for iPhone. May be Apple will make some chips in cable so other brands cables stop working, this is possible.

Smartphone development in general has reached a plateau. You're really only going to see incremental upgrades over the coming years. If you're expecting revolution each year then might I suggest you go have a cold shower.

Bit OT perhaps, but i been really happy with my iPhone 13 so far, especially screen and camera.
But I tried a iPhone 11 Pro this week again, and realized how terrible the 13 pro is hold in comparison, I would even say the 11 pro looks more modern and feels more premium.
So in that department I think there are still improvements to be made.

While I agree with your overall point, I take issue with “this generation can be considered a disappointment”. They’re phenomenal devices. MAYBE they’d be disappointing if you went 12Pro to 13Pro, but honestly I fail to understand people who upgrade every year - it’s asking to be underwhelmed.

But even in that scenario, the battery life alone is a huge QOL improvement

Going forward, improvements to hardware and software will be incremental to one degree or another. At the end of the day, it's a personal choice based your circumstances and decision based upon research considering opinions and reviews but ultimately making your own choice. Apple, like any other manufacturer has to prioritize the implementation of new features and hardwsre that is consistent with their standards and business plan as well as focusing on the overall experience that an iPhone just works with an ecosystem to match.

Apple could address that either by hoping/assuming that people’s WiFi, at least at home, will mostly be fast enough once WiFi 6 becomes widely adopted or alternatively it could implement a proprietary ultra-wideband (UWB) data transfer protocol. Latest iPhones already have UWB so if Apple released wireless chargers with a UWB radio in that plugged into a PC via a USB-C cable it could get to 675 Mbps based on what I have read about UWB maximum data rate. OK, it’s nothing like the maximum USB-C data rate but it would be a step up from what I’ve read is Lightning’s 480 Mbps data rate. I suspect that Apple would quite like that latter approach because it gives it a whole new range of accessories to sell and more lock-in to the Apple ecosystem.

The thing that concerns me most about no wired connectors is charging when travelling. I like to travel REALLY light, pretty much everyone I have ever travelled with has commented on it and that is a lot of people because I used to spend between 150 and 200 days a year travelling on business. Having to pack a relatively bulky wireless charging pad would be annoying. When Apple does go this route, and I suspect it is “when” rather than “if”, I really hope that accessory manufacturers step up to the plate and produce either paper-thin recharging mats or integrate wireless rechargers into ultra-compact power banks with less than 1mm increase in thickness. It is possible to get power banks now that have an integrated wireless charging pad but the ones I’ve seen have all been 20,000 mAh or bigger so more than I would want to carry. I’d really like to see a credit card sized 3,000 - 5,000 mAh unit that I could keep in my travel wash bag purely for emergency charging in case the what I hope by then will be multi-day battery on my phone runs out mid trip. If that happens then I’d have no concerns about going portless.

I wonder how long it will be before enough of the telecoms industry goes eSIM for Apple to do away with the SIM slot too. That would be a huge leap that if done too early would lose Apple a lot of customers. For instance anyone in the UK now on a PAYG contract or on most (maybe even all) of the cheaper monthly contracts from the mobile virtual network operators would not be able to get an eSIM. I wouldn’t be surprised if that accounts for at least 50% of Apple’s current UK customer base.

I would like to see a macOS on iPhone the way Dex is on a Galaxy. Having a 1TB iPhone and plugging into a USB C monitor or docking station and having full macOS or even the gimpy iPadOS would be a huge feature to me. I love Dex on my Galaxy since I can plug it into my work setup and have my personal device while I'm at work. iOS/iPadOS is so boring to me lately, OneUI is so much more modern feeling. I just don't prefer to use Android or I would use it full time.

Oh no! Apple might as well stop selling iPhones if this guys vision comes true.

My guesses are we will not see a completely redesigned phone, until the Iphone 15, which will completely oust the notch, as it may be the first foldable phone, also it may have a periscope lens, satellite phone etc as prior rumours.

That is my prediction.

but anyone could have said this about any generation iPhone? How would we know what's to come in the future when it doesn't exist yet?

the camera will keep improving. the processor will keep getting faster. display technology will continue to evolve. countless other features will be introduced.

lol bye.

Having technology break through is very hard. They can make even much faster cpu for sure but not even much bigger camera sensor or much better battery

I agree , can’t really see what they can improve, maybe up the pixel count and the zoom ?

13 pro max is a truly remarkable piece of technology

Yes 13 series is good timing option for old phone users to upgrade. Not much improvement after 13 then no point to wait.

States nothing more can be done, followed by a list of 8 things that they expect to be improved. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Smartphones are fairly mature and it is a lot about refinements and experiments right now. However, there are still plenty of improvements to be made. I’m not going to debate each of your bullet points, but arguments can be made against each one.

You never know what the future holds… and if you do, please tell me the next big powerball numbers.

What Apple did every year is very easy to predict, I don't see anything great for them to copy anymore.

What new in watch 7?
Detect you fail down from a bike
Tracking for Tai Chi

So useful right?

Do you always fail down from a bike or do Tai Chi? I guess almost 100% users dont

This is what happen when there is nothing great for Apple to copy

Not useful to YOU

Do you see a big difference between a 2020 vehicle vs a 2021? What about 2018 vs 2021? Very little difference, correct? But as more years go on, we see bigger differences that can be felt by almost all customers.

Apple puts out new models of iPhone every year so that no matter when someone decides to upgrade, they can have the most up-to-date, packed full of latest tech. It doesn’t matter if every person finds all the updates useful. The fact they are even trying to add new stuff and constantly improve should be good enough.
