If that minor difference at 80% is that important for some, as it appears to be I'd go for a walk outside. But it's MacRumors so...
The issue is wanting to keep the battery at 80% max because it’s supposed to be better for the health of the battery.

in my experience doesn't really matter

I religiously kept it between 20-80% (my 14 PM ) and battery health took a swan dive over the course of the year.

pretty much no wireless charging either and always OEM bricks. it's sat at 88% health for some time now though well over 6 months

You never had it charged to 100%? You should do it here and there to calibrate the battery.

Battery health really is mostly luck of the draw. Aside from regularly exposing your battery to temperature extremes, nothing that the user does is likely to make a significant difference.

Yes, very happy with my launch day 14PM in space black. The frame and bezels are still like new. Battery is 98% health. All good.
Sure it still works fine but IMO it didn’t age well.

Maybe yours which I’m sorry to hear about. But mine is mint. And I’m very fussy. I primarily used it inside an Apple silicon case.
I didn’t meant mechanically. See my posts above. Not able to run all apps within a year isn’t well aging.

That's "optimize battery charging". That's not the same as what the newer devices have and what the OP is referring to, which puts a hard limit of 80% on the battery's charging. The "optimize" feature has the phone attempt to learn when it should charge past 80% based on your charging habits. It may work well for people who charge on a regular schedule. I've found that for someone like me who just charges as I feel like or need to, with no regular routine, it does absolutely nothing because it can't establish a pattern.

So no, the 14 series doesn't have the feature that the OP is referring to for 80% charging.

Thanks for explaining the difference. I can see the use of a hard stop. Sounds like Apple should be able to offer this through the system software. Hmm…

For sure, as expected with a flagship iPhone. This is a phone I expect to last for at least 3 years, probably longer. That’s why I go for the “latest and greatest” when buying a phone, so it will not get too far behind along with all the annual iterations. OP, the points you’re listing is fair enough but to be expected, and you just have to upgrade yearly to stay on top in that case. If you can’t buy a pro max and have it for years, then I don’t know. It’s partly FOMO involved here isn’t it, and I ask that in all kindness?

I think it's also the price. The higher the price the higher the expectations. My 5S was 800 Euros, the X 1100 Euros and the 14PM over 2000 Euros.
For over 2000 Euros I expected more to be honest. Yes it's fine but I paid more than it was worth it. That's what I feel about the purchase. The older iphone purchases felt better.

It finally happened after 20 months on my 14 PM. This phone is a keeper, clearly.

Only 56 cycles on my 15 PM and still at 100%. I attribute my Ultra 2 in contributing to less wear on the iPhone.

My iPhone Xʀ on iOS 12 is 4.7 years old. It has lived at high SoC (close to 100%) for the majority of its life. Battery life is 18.5 hours of SOT. Health is 90%. Nothing else to say.

...well, other than it’s the most pointless fixation I have ever seen. It doesn’t even guarantee anything, and if you update iOS you’ll get far worse battery life anyway, regardless of health.

Airplane mode + minimal brightness + reading book?
That’s the only scenario I can imagine to be able to get such SOT.
Low brightness, no Airplane Mode, no iBooks. Web browsing, texting, Netflix.

I tested my 9.7-inch iPad Pro by only using iBooks and I got 21.5 hours. As this iPhone is better, I reckon that with only iBooks I’d be closer to 30.

I do like my 14 Pro Max. But battery life isn't great! mine is only just over a year old and already i'm down to 89% battery health.

I'm not going to "baby my phone" by planning my usage around charging etc. Never had this issue with my previous iPhones!

Also as others have mentioned. I'm done with the lightning port and would like a type C port!

So i may upgrade to the 16 Pro Max in September!

I'm still abundantly pleased with my 14PM. None of your aging minuses are of any concern to me. I'd probably still have my 13PM, but I wanted the 14PM for its AOD.

Honestly, for me iPhone is so boring and has so few upgrades year to year that my 14PM could be 11PM (I loved the feel of it in the hands), 12PM or a 13PM. Didn’t even bother upgrading to 15PM. As it stands I have no inclination to upgrade to the 16PM since I suspect it’ll be basically like what have now. Oh well… FWIW I also have a Samsung Fold 5 and it is great. But the iPhone 14PM is my daily driver. I jumped in fully to the Apple ecosystem in 2018 to better communicate / keep in touch with my family that uses Apple 100%.

Question for you; why did you buy the device if you thought it was poor value for money?

It seems odd to me that you recognised you didn’t see value in the product, but you bought it anyway.

There is lucky factor (from manufacturer batch), but user treatments affect as well (ie, frequently in heat environment, frequent discharge to 0%).
